Maple syrup (枫糖浆) is a sweetener frm maple tree sap (树汁). Many peple use it in baking in place f sugar r ther sweeteners, sme use it in tea instead f hney and it is frequently used as a tpping fr pancakes, waffles, and ther breakfast fds. Since true maple syrup is rather expensive, a wide range f false maple syrup exist.
This sweetener riginated in the nrtheast regin f Nrth America, and it is in this regin that mst f the wrld’s maple syrup is still prduced. Vermnt, New Hampshire Maine, and the eastern prtin f Canada are all knwn fr their fine syrup, each with slightly different flavr qualities.
This sweetener is prduced by tapping maple trees t release and cllect their sap. A tree's sap is the liquid that, much like bld in animals, carries water and fd t different parts f the tree t keep it nurished. A mature maple prduces abut ten gallns f sap in a given seasn, after which the tree will wall ff the channel that has been tapped, s that a new tap has t be drilled the next seasn. Maples are nt tapped fr syrup until they are at least 40 years ld and have reached a certain size, t ensure that n harm cmes t the tree thrugh the tapping prcess .
An immense amunt f sap is required t prduce maple syrup because the watery sap must be reduced t achieve the prper thickness and taste. Althugh the exact amunt depends n the sweetness f the sap, in general it takes abut 40 times as much maple sap t prduce a prtin f syrup. This may be further reduced t create thicker delicacies, such as maple butter, maple cream , and maple sugar.
In the Us, there are grade A and Grade B syrups, with three sub-divisins f Grade A: light amber, medium amber, and dark amber. Grade B is even darker than Grade A dark amber. Many peple assume that the grading system is als indicative f quality, but in reality, it nly helps t differentiate the clr and taste f the syrup, which is a matter f persnal preference. The tastes are different, but t say ne is bjectively “better” than anther wuld be incrrect.

A. Because it is widely used in mst delicacies.
B. Because it helps t prtect ld trees frm harm.
C. Because it needs t be cncentrated t make maple syrup.
D. Because the mre sap is used, the better maple syrup tastes.
11. What's the main purpse f writing the text?

C. T intrduce basic knwledge f maple syrup.

Mst squirrels dn’t hibernate(冬眠). Instead, they stre fd fr the cld seasn and spend the winter in their nests. But the 13-lined grund squirrel, ne species f squirrel in the U.S. Midwest, is nt the case. Fr up t 8 mnths, the tiny mammals wn’t eat r drink anything at all and the heart rate, metablism(新陈代谢), and bdy temperature dramatically drp during their lng rest, which is similar t bears and ther hibernating animals.
T find ut hw the hibernating squirrels hld back their thirst, a pwerful frce that culd ptentially wake them up, and researchers measured the bld fluid f dzens f squirrels. Even when researchers wke up the trpid squirrels, they wuldn’t drink a drp until the team artificially increased the cncentratin f their bld serum.
Next, the researchers wanted t knw hw the squirrels’ bld cncentratin drpped s lw. Perhaps the squirrels drank a lt f water befre hibernatin t dilute(稀释) their bld, the researchers thught. But when they filmed squirrels preparing fr their winter snze, they fund the animals actually drank less water than they nrmally did.
Instead, chemical tests revealed the squirrels regulate their bld cncentratin by getting rid f electrlytes(电解质)like sdium and ther chemicals like glucse and urea and string them elsewhere in the bdy (pssibly in the bladder), the researchers reprted last mnth in Current Bilgy. The finding culd als explain hw ther hibernating animals stay cntaining water.
This new knwledge might ne day help humans with cnditins such as diabetes(糖尿病), r astrnauts wh have launched n lng space flights. Unfrtunately, even if peple can figure ut hw t drp their bld cncentratin, it’s unlikely they’ll ever be as cute as sleeping squirrels.

14. Hibernating squirrels adjust their bld cncentratins by_____________.
A. Drinking much water befre hibernatin
B. Nt eating anything during hibernatin
C. Drinking less water than they nrmally d
D. Remving certain chemicals and string them smewhere
15. What is the authr’s attitude twards the new findings?
A. ObjectiveB. Psitive
C. DisappintingD. Uncaring
