    第二部分阅读理解(共20小题每小题2.5满分50

    A

Life on Mars could become a reality and it could happen in your lifetime.

    A welcoming planet

Scientists say Earth's neighbor Mars, a bright red planet about half. Earths' size, is the most likely to support human life. Mars even has frozen water on its surface.

Since the late 1990s, NASA has been exploring Mars using remote-controlled vehicles. Most recently Curiosity, a car-size vehicle, traveled through space on an unpiloted spacecraft and landed on Mars in August 2012. Directed by NASA scientists, the vehicles move on the surface, taking pictures, collecting and analyzing soil, and looking for signs of life.

But what about human explorers? Plans are already in the works to send astronauts to Mars as soon as the mid-2030s.

    ________

But before you start packing your bags, let's consider the challenges. For starters, Mars is far away. Just getting there could take up to 10 months.

Scientists already know that time away from Earth's gravity harms the human body. Bones and muscles get weaker. The body produces less blood. What damage would months and months of living in space do?

And then there is the matter of water, oxygen, food and fuel. Scientists will have to find solutions to these problems, or the first humans on Mars won't survive very long in their new home.

    Tiny Dangers

There's another tinier risk. It's so tiny that you can't even see it: germs.

Some scientists believe that our germs could pollute the whole planet of Mars. Potentially killing Martian life before we have the chance to discover it. Worse, there is a small but terrifying chance that any microscopic life already there might be harmful to us.

Worse still, if any of those Martian germs (火星细菌) were brought back to Earth, the result could be disastrous. Animals, plants, and people could be wiped out.

    Worth the $ $ $?

A more practical concern is the cost. The price could approach $ 1 trillion (万亿). How can we justify spending that much when so many problems - poverty, disease- could use the cash here on Earth?

    36. Which of the following is TRUE according to the "A welcoming planet" part?

    A. Mars is a little bigger than Earth.

    B. There are flowing rivers on Mars.

    C. People haven't been to Mars so far.

    38. By "Tiny dangers" the author means ________.

    B. people won't be in any danger

    C. it's difficult for people to realize the danger

    39. Which may cause the biggest danger?

    A. Martian germs may be different from those on Earth.

    B. Martian germs may be brought back to Earth.

    C. People may carry germs to Mars.

    D. There may be germs on Mars.

    40. Which section of a newspaper is the passage most probably taken from?

    A. Science.    B. History.    C. People.   D. Business.

    B

When people ask me how I started writing. I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language. Having said that, I didn't know for a long time what I was looking for. It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues, I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.

Back in 1978, I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition. Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons. I composed my lectures on the way, and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.

As a way out, I decided to get up two hours before my usual time. My alarm was set for 5:00 a.m.. The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm's reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway. I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.

Since that first morning in 1978, I have been following the habit to this day, not making or accepting many excuses for not writing. I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel, I divided my two hours: the first for poetry, the second for fiction. Well or badly, I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel, The Line of the Sun, was finished. If I had waited to have the time, I would still be waiting to write my novel.

What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision: taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if it's the only way.

The national, historical city of Dunhuang is a renowned tourist city, famous for the Mogo Caves. It is situated in the common boundary of Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang. Dunhuang, long ago referred to as "Sha Zhou" (beautiful desert oasis), was the hub of middle and eastern silk routes in ancient times. The city landmark is an attractive statue, the idea of which comes from the mural in Mogao Caves, a shrine (圣地) to the culture and arts of Dunhuang. From Mt. Qilian in the south, Mt. Mazong in the north and desert from east to west, the landform of Dunhuang City is a declining basin-plain from west to northeast, high in the north and south, and low in the middle. The western cities of China, especially those in the desert, are known for their sandstorms, so tourists should protect themselves with glasses, hats and gauze kerchiefs, etc.

In ancient times, Duhuang was the center of trade between China and its western neighbors. At that time, it was the most westerly frontier military garrison (要塞) in China. With the flourishing of trade along the Silk Road, Dunhuang was prompted to become the most open area in international trade in Chinese history. It provided the only access westward for the Chinese Empire and eastward for west nationalities. Today, as a reminder of this historical area, we are left with the Mogao Caves, Yangguan Pass, Yumenguan Pass and many wonderful Chinese poems describing the time. Although what remains of the two Passes are crumbling walls, one can still experience the atmosphere of that time while visiting in person.

Today, Dunhuang is a typical tourist city, clean and beautiful. Because of its splendid stone caves, tourism has become an indispensable industry to Duhuang City. Surrounding establishments include various classes of hotels and restaurants for your choosing. As well, tourism personnel are knowledgeable and well trained these days. For a western city in China, it has become more accessible for people to come and go as they please. Transportation is much more efficient, ensuring that your wonderful trip runs smoothly. May to September is the best time to visit, so be sure to plan your trip during these months. Including Dunhuang City in your tour is a decision you won't regret.

    46. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 1?

    A. Dunhung played an important role in middle and eastern silk routes.

    B. Dunhuang is low in the north and south, and high in the middle.

    C. Dunhuang is named after the Mogao Caves.

    D. The landmark of Dunhuang is Mt. Qilian.

    47. The underlined word "access" in Paragraph 2 means ________.

    A. a key to success

    B. a way of entering

    C. the right to use something

    D. an opportunity to escape

    48. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Dunhuang is also called Sha Zhou.

    B. Dunhuang is the most westerly frontier military garrison in China.

    C. You can enjoy various classes of hotels and restaurants in Dunhuang.

    D. The best time to visit Dunhuang is autumn.

    49. What's the author's purpose in writing this article?

    A. To warn people not to go to Dunhuang.

    B. To prove his love to the city of Dunhuang.

    C. To introduce the basic information of the city of Dunhuang.

    D. To ask people to find out the mystery of the city of Dunhuang.

    50. Which is the best title for this passage?

    A. The History of Dunhuang

    B. The Significance of Dunhuang

    第三部分写作

    第一节阅读表达5小题每小题2分,满分10

    阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

On my first job as a sports editor for the Montpeler Leader Enterprise (MLE), I didn't get a lot of fan mail, so my attention was caught by a letter on my desk one morning.

When I opened it, I read: "Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work." It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager (being paid the grand total of 15 cents a column inch), his words could not have been more inspiring. I kept the letter in my desk drawer until it got old. Whenever I doubted whether I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would reread Don's note and walk on air again.

Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of life. "When I make others feel good about themselves," he told me "I feel good, too."

Over the years, I've tried to copy Don and write uplifting words. In a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth.

Why are positive note writers in such short supply? My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Thus it may cause trouble and problems. And it sounds old-fashioned. Also, writing takes time; it is far easier to pick up the phone.

The drawback of phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. A note attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once savored (回味) and treasured, and they bring strength and love to us.

Today I sent a warm letter to my old boss. I don't know if it will make his day, but it made mine. As my friend Don Wolfe said. "Making others feel good about themselves makes me feelgood, too."

    56. According to the author, why aren't people willing to write letters?

    (no more than 20 words)

    57. What does the underlined part "walk on air" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    (no more than 5 words)

    58. Why did the author write to his old boss? (no more than 15 words)

    59. What's the main idea of Paragraph 2? (no more than 15 words)

    60. Were you encouraged by anybody? And how? (no more than 25 words)
