Shimon, a four-armed robot with a ball-like head, holds small mallets(球棍) in “hands” to play a kind of music called a marimba. As he plays, his head moves around in time to the music.
Using “deep learning”, Shimon was taught to write his own music. He could not only make up his own music, but do it in real time, while playing with other musicians. This is called “improvising”.
Now he is back with a whole bunch of new tricks. He can write the words to his own songs, and sing them. Shimon learned to write the words for the songs the same way he learned to write music – by being “fed” thousands of examples. Shimon was trained on the lyrics (歌词) to 50,000 songs.
Georgia Tech professor Gil Weinberg, who leads the Shimon project, gets Shimon going with a starting idea. Shimon then writes the lyrics based around that idea. Mr. Weinberg usually provides much of the music for the songs, but Shimon helps out there, too.
Singing the songs is another story. To give Shimon a voice, the Georgia Tech team worked with experts at Pompeu Fabra University. The voice was created using AI and sounds very much like a man.
Later this spring, the team plans to put out an album of about 8-10 of Shimon’s songs. The album will be released on the music streaming service Spotify. There are also plans for Shimon to go on tour with a band to play and sing his songs live.
For Mr. Weinberg, that’s the main goal behind the Shimon Project – not to have robots take over, but to have robots and humans make something beautiful together.
    24. What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 1?
    A. To describe what the robot looks like.
    B. To tell readers how Shimon performs.
    C. To arouse readers’ curiosity to read further.
    D. To advertise functions of the robot Shimon.
    25. What skill does Shimon NOT have?
    A. Writing music. B. Releasing albums.
    C. Singing songs. D. Playing the marimba.
    26. How does Shimon gain the ability to write lyrics?
    A. By deep learning.
    B. By copying songs.
    C. By feeding himself.
    D. By teaching himself.
    27. What does the Shimon Project mainly aim to?
    A. Have Shimon achieve more amazing skills.
    B. Make robots take the place of human beings.
    C. Carry out a music tour to make more profits.
    D. Have Robots and humans work hand in hand.
    C
On Monday, about 270 pilot whales got into difficulty on a sandbank at Macquarie Heads, near Strahan on Tasmania’s west coast, about 190 kilometres from Hobart. Another 200 of the animals were found early on Wednesday, making it Tasmania’s largest recorded stranding event. The Department of Primary Industry, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) said that about a third had died.
Marine biologists arrived in the area to carry out rescue operations. They planned to use specialized equipment such as special tarpaulins to push the whales back into the deep water. The local police also assisted in the rescue.
The whales that were stranded are Pilot Whales, and they are found in almost all the oceans of the world, according to the Marine conservation group. Pilot whales are in fact one of the largest members of the dolphin family, but they are treated as whales for the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations issued in 1992.They were named pilot whales because it was thought that each pod followed a ‘pilot’ in the group.
Cetacean stranding, commonly known as beaching, is a phenomenon in which whales and dolphins strand themselves on land, usually on a beach. Several explanations for why cetaceans strand themselves have been proposed, including changes in water temperatures, unusual features of whales’ echo location in certain surroundings, and geomagnetic disturbances, but none have so far been universally accepted as a definitive reason for the behavior.
In recent years, whale strandings have become more frequent around the world. In November 2018, a dead sperm whale that had washed ashore in eastern Indonesia consumed a horrifying collection of plastic trash, including 115 drinking cups, 25 plastic bags, plastic bottles, two flip-flops and a bag containing more than 1,000 pieces of string. In all, the plastic contents of the whale’s stomach weighed 13.2 pound (six kilograms). The bags are black due to a reaction with the creature’s stomach acids, according to Thai Whales organization. A person, on average, breathes or swallows at least 74,000 microscopic particles of plastic each year.
    28. How many whales died according to DPIPWE?
    A. About 160. B. About 200. C. About 270. D. About 470.
    29. What does the underlined word “stranding” mean in Paragraph 1?
    A. Being put into danger.
    B. Being trapped in trouble.
    C. Being found in extinction.
    D. Being left or driven ashore.
    30. What does the author want to tell us by the numbers in Paragraph 5?
    A. Whales mistake plastics for food.
    B. Whales need the ability of self-protection.
    C. Whales’ living conditions are worsening.
    D. Whales have an excellent digestive system.
    31. What will be discussed probably following the last paragraph?
    A. Protective measures for whales.
    B. The reasons for whale stranding.
    C. Studying whales’ stomach deeply.
    D. Researching the oceans’ ecosystem.

The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he had about 40 years on his classmates in my class. He eagerly jumped into class discussions, with his self-deprecating humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ opinions, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile-and he left with one too.
One day, Valencia said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money from construction jobs and have his student-loan papers in order. But he said he was still coming to campus to attend events or see friends. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit. No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, front and center, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles – a 63-year-old junior with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
“Here he is, willingly taking a class for the joy of it and benefit of learning,” says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year old junior. “You may not see that in our generation.”
Valencia showed up and took the final exam too. Afterward, I overheard Valencia say he wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
Twelve years? He was in and out of school, he said, subject to his work schedule and whether he had money for classes. He had earned his associate of arts degree over the summer, then transferred to Cal State LA to start on his bachelor’s.
    32. What’s Paragraph 1 mainly about?
    A. Valencia’s daily life at school.
    B. Valencia’s interest in learning.
    C. Valencia’s participation in class.
    D. Valencia’s academic performance.
    33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
    A. Valencia gave up taking classes.
    B. Loans supported Valencia’s life.
    C. Valencia met with financial problems.
    D. Valencia was prepared to reapply for classes.
    34. What can we learn from Jessica’s words?
    A. Jessica dislikes the way Valencia learns.
    B. Young people benefit a lot from learning.
    C. Young students are content with learning.
    D. She appreciates Valencia’s attitude to study.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Curiosity is source of success.
    B. A person is never too old to learn.
    C. Kindness deserves being respected.
    D. The early bird catches the first worm.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You may be the best candidate for a job. 36 Experience and qualifications are important, but you  have to sell yourself as the best person for the post. Here are some procedures to go through:
    37
You should not present yourself as being different from what you are, but you can present yourself in a very positive way. Consider what the interviewers’ likely prejudices and dislikes may be, and take these into account when answering questions and unveiling your personality and reflect on the personal qualities that might be necessary for the work you will be doing.
    Research the company.
The more you know about your potential employers, the better. Investigate their products, try them if appropriate. 38 Visit a library, read trade magazines, newspapers, company brochures and reports that will bring you up to date with the latest developments in the company.
Know about your own weaknesses and strengths.
Good interviewers are practiced in finding the weaknesses in a candidate, so don’t imagine
that you are certain to get away with anything. Of course you can sit down with a pen and paper,
and match your skills and experience to the job description. 39
Consider the less obvious qualities the employers might be searching for.
40 How do you rate yourself in terms of  the ability to work under pressure, creative
thinking, leadership qualities? Write a short note of incidents in which you have displayed these characteristics.

A.Think what will benefit the employer.
    B. It is uncertain that it will be offered to you.
    C. Then write down what your real advantages are.
    D. Make your best impression on the interviewers.
    E. You should also keep a lookout for their advertisements.
    F. You can make them know you have potential in certain areas.
G.This requires you to know as much about the position as possible.

    录音原文
    Text 1
W: You are late! You should have come earlier to see the wonderful beginning of the film.
M: Well, I met my brother at the airport and we bought something on the way back.
    Text 2
W: Excuse me, do you know an easy way to get to the airport?
M: Why don’t you take the bus? That’s what I always do when I fly.
    Text 3
M: Why did you set the alarm for 8:00?
W: Dear, but you said you had a meeting to attend at 8:30. Hurry up, you have to get to the office in 15 minutes.
    M: Oh, I’m so tired.
    Text 4
M: Why are you taking the pills? Are you sick?
W: No. These pills are helping me to lose weight.
M: Are they from a doctor?
W: No. A TV commercial said they would help.
    Text 5
W: How’s your stomach this morning?
    M: Much better, thanks.
W: But you must stay in bed for another day or two, and you mustn’t eat too much.
M: But, doctor, I haven’t eaten anything since the day before yesterday.
W: Oh, that’s terrible. You should eat something.
    Text 6
M: Hey, Mary! What have you been doing these days?
W: Oh, hi, Tom. I’ve been studying a lot lately. All my classes seem to have exams during the same week.
M: That’s awful. Where are you going now?
W: I’m heading to the gym. I’ve been sitting at my desk all day and I need some exercise. Do you want to walk out there with me?
M: Actually, I’m on the way back from the gym. I just had swimming practice and I’m going to dinner.
    Text 7
W: What kind of music do you like listening to?
M: I like music that has a fast beat and is lively, like dance music, which is sometimes too loud though. You prefer classical music, don’t you?
W: Yes, I do. I find it very relaxing. I often listen to Mozart or Bach in the evening after a hard day at work.
M: I must admit that I like several pieces of classical music.
W: Classical music is supposed to be good for your brain. Students who listen to classical music while studying perform better.
M: Really? Perhaps I should listen to classical music often. I heard that listening to classical music is helpful in reducing stress.
W: Yes. That’s why I listen to it in the evenings. But in the early morning when I get up, I prefer to listen to folk music, which is more traditional.
    Text 8
W: Well, Jack. Take a seat, please. And, where does your enthusiasm for sports come from?
M: Hmm, let me think. It’s difficult to choose one thing in particular... I grew up around sport. My best friend Mike likes sports. My mum was a really good athlete, actually.
    W: Oh, yes?
M: We used to go and see her running marathons, which made a big impression on me as a child. I suppose it’s in my blood.
W: Right, fantastic. And how do you think teachers can encourage their students to enjoy sports?
M: Hmm, that’s an interesting question. On one hand, I think many students enjoy the competitive activities. They want to be the best, and it’s motivating for them. On the other hand, we need to encourage the ones who are not as confident. So we need to reward them for participating and trying their best. It’s not all about winning!
W: OK, thank you very much, Jack. You make some good points.
    Text 9
M: Anna, what do you do now? Are you a doctor? Or a teacher?
W: Neither, I’m a manager in an American company that produces iPods.
M: Ah, that must be a position with a good salary.
W: Yes, it is! But I have to work hard for what I get—twelve to fourteen hours a day.
M: I see. So what’s your degree in? Something related to iPods?
W: Well, I have a degree in computers at university, and I’ve taken a course in typing and various forms of office training. There aren’t many opportunities for women in management. This work was about the only thing I could find.
M: Do you get much time off work?
W: Only two days off a month. But I sometimes get to travel with my boss, and I enjoy that.
M: That’s good that you like your job so much. I have to say, though, I prefer my eight-hour days, even though I don’t earn all that much.
    Text 10
W: Television is the most significant influence on children in the United States, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children go to school. And, by the time that the average child finishes high school, he or she will have spent 18, 000 hours in front of a television set as opposed to 12, 000 hours in a classroom.
Parents are concerned about these figures and the lack of quality in television programs for children. They are worried the violence in many of these shows may have a negative effect on the young minds. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents are in favor of. The most famous of these is “Sesame Street”, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.
Even though most parents and educators give “Sesame Street” and shows like it high marks for quality, some argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. They say that the habit of watching hours of television a day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.
