Hollywood is looking East. And not just for ticket buyers. It is putting more and more Chinese elements into its productions. Chinese elements are playing an important role in Western films. Here, we list just a few of these elements.
The Chinese people
Hollywood has a history of casting Caucasian(白种人) actors for films where the race of the character is anything but white. Now, things are changing bit by bit. Kung fu superstar Bruce Lee was perhaps the first Chinese face Hollywood got familiar with. Action stars Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-fat and Jet Lee followed his footsteps. More and more ethnically Chinese faces were introduced to the silver screen around the world.
Symbols of China
Kung fu seems to be an element immediately associated with China. This also shows in films. The Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and actor Will Smiths son Jaden Smith, tells the story of how a boy, who was bullied at school, changed the course of his life after learning martial arts from a car mechanic (played by Chan). The film earned more than 1.6 billion yuan in ticket sales in China.
The Chinese language
Actor Bruce Willis showed his language skills in the film Red, where he said “A few years ago, I lived in Wuhan” in Chinese. This caused quite a stir in the theatres for Chinese audiences. Willis is not the only one who has spoken Chinese on the big screen. In Pearl Harbour, Alec Baldwin taught American soldiers how to say "I am an American " in Chinese. Nicolas Cage also delivered one of his most recognized lines “I prefer to shoot"in Chinese in Lord of War.
- Why does Hollywood look East ?
- Chinese film industry develops better.
- Hollywood intends to attract more ticket buyers.
- Hollywood finds it valuable to cooperate with China.
- Chinese elements make a big difference to Hollywood.
- Which Chinese actor did Hollywood first become familiar with ?
- Chow Yun-fat B. Jackie Chan C. Bruce Lee D. Will Smiths
- Who spoke the lines in Chinese in Pearl Harbour ?
- Bruce Willis B. Alec Baldwin C. Nicolas Cage D. Jaden Smith

At the first exhibition of Henri Rousseau’s paintings in 1886, the public laughed out loud, and critics made fun of his original, unschooled style, one writing "Monsieur Rousseau paints with his feet, and his eyes covered.”
Despite heavy criticism throughout his life, Rousseau kept painting, confident in his gift. He never received formal training in the arts because his family was too poor. For more than twenty years, he worked at the Paris customs office. It wasn’t until the age of 40 that he took up the brush, teaching himself to paint by copying works at the Louvre and studying nature. “Nothing makes me so happy as to observe nature and to paint what I see.” he said.
Though his best-known paintings are of jungle scenes with monkeys, lions, and small woods, Rousseau never left France or saw a jungle. To paint foreign plants and animals, he relied on books, botanical gardens(植物园) in Paris, and his imagination. "When I go into the glasshouse and I see the strange plants of faraway lands,” he once said, "it seems to me that I enter into a dream.”
Rousseau claimed to have invented a new style of painting called the landscape-portrait, in which he paints a background view and then adds a person in the foreground later, as he did in Myself: Portrait-Landscape (1890).
Called a naive (天真) artist due to his childlike, untrained style, Rousseau painted colors one at a time, starting from the top and working his way down. While critics described his works as flat and inexact descriptions of nature, he earned the respect of artists like Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, who thought Rousseau was onto something new.
Though his work was never accepted by the art world in his time, Rousseau’s paintings hang in museums around the world today. And Rousseau’s original approach to art has inspired countless artists to follow their own unique views.
- Why did Rousseau have no formal training in arts?
- Because he preferred painting in his own way.
- Because he was afraid of being criticized by others.
- Because his family couldn’t afford the training.
- Because there were more to be found in nature.
25. What can we learn about Rousseau?
A. He was unwilling to develop a personal style.
B. He moved to a jungle to study nature.
C. He came from an artistic family.
D. He was indeed a self-taught painter.
26. What is Rousseau' s art like?
A. It is black-and-white. B. It is simple and original.
C. It presents social reality. D. It employs persons in the background.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A .Rousseau ’s works have now been recognized.
B. Rousseau earned a good reputation in his time.
C. Rousseau encouraged young artists to follow his footsteps.
D. Rousseau’s paintings have hardly ever been shown in museums.

A new study suggests that 98 percent of Emperor penguin groups may be pushed close to extinction by the year 2100. And about 70 percent of their groups will be in danger by 2050. The research was published in the journal Global Change Biology.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)recently announced a plan to list the Emperor penguins as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Stephanie Jenouvrier , who is a penguin ecologist said that Emperor penguins need secure sea ice to reproduce, to feed and to molt. Molting is the replacement of their old feathers with new ones.
The new study looked at overall warming developments and the increasing likelihood of extreme weather changes because of global warming. The study noted that extremely low levels of sea ice in 2016 led to a large reproduction failure of an Emperor penguin group in Antarctica's Halley Bay. That year, seasonal sea ice broke up before young penguins had time to develop waterproof adult feathers. About 10,000 baby birds drowned, Jenouvrier said. The group did not recover afterwards.
Emperor penguins reproduce only in Antarctica during winter. Temperatures can reach minus 40 degrees Celsius, and wind speeds can reach 144 kilometers per hour. The penguins survive by gathering in groups of several thousand birds. But they cannot survive without enough sea ice.
The U.S. government has listed other species outside the country as threatened, including the polar bear. Polar bears live in Arctic areas and are also threatened by climate change and sea ice loss.
Placing Emperor penguins on the threatened list provides protections, such as a ban against importing them for business purposes. Possible effects on the penguins must also be studied by U.S. sea fisheries currently operating in Antarctica. Martha Williams, principal deputy director of the U.S. FWS said “climate change affects many animal species around the world.” She added, "The decisions made by policymakers today and during the next few decades will determine the fate of the Emperor penguin."
- What does the underlined word “likelihood” in Para.3 mean ?
- Disappearance B. significance C. probability D. barriers
- What caused the large reproduction failure of an Emperor penguin group ?
A.Being short of enough sea ice.
B. Lacking adequate food to feed.
C. The Antarctica being extremely cold.
D. Not having waterproof adult feathers.
- What can you infer about the Emperor penguin from the passage ?
- The Emperor penguin will die out by the year 2100.
- The Emperor penguin can survive by gathering in groups.
- The future of the Emperor penguin is under complete control.
- The authority has taken action to protect the Emperor penguin.
- Which of the following can be the best title for the text ?
- Emperor penguins and polar bears are listed as threatened
- Melting ice threatens Emperor penguins’ environment
- How Emperor penguins survive in extreme weather conditions
- Climate change affects many animal species all over the world
D.
We’ve had waves of panic around technology for decades, whether it is comic books or video games. Now it happens to be social media. And the fact of the matter is that parents and teachers, who are trying to raise their kids in the face of these panics, are being poorly served by the government when it comes to getting meaningful advice.
It's not that social media is good or bad for people. It's that the science of social media and mental health is broken. We need to do research, but we shouldn’t be approaching it from the perspective that the world is ending. We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects, positive and negative.
The danger for policymakers or parents is that if you pretend that social media is a problem, without having evidence, and you take steps to regulate it, the intervention(妨碍)could end up being really bad for young people. You might be taking away a lifeline for vulnerable(脆弱的) kids or free them of their human right to play, which is morally reprehensible(受谴责的)at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic.
So that's why I'm not going to tell you that I know social media is bad. It's perfectly reasonable for parents and teachers to be concerned about social media, but it's unavoidable and young people are going to encounter it sooner or later. So what would you rather do: keep them in the dark and leave them ill-equipped to deal with it or let them learn about social media with your help and support? It's a little like learning to ride a bike. Bikes can be huge fun to ride, but you can also hurt yourself on them, which is why you don't just give your kid a bike and a helmet and wish them good luck. You help them learn to ride. Similarly, you're not asking your 14-year- old daughter to choose between telling you someone scary is messaging her or losing her phone. You need to treat it like anything else that can hurt you, but can also connect you.
32. What does this wave of panic refer to now according to the passage ?
A. Technology B. Comic books C. Video games D. Social media
33. What should we do to help our children?
A. Give them some instructions
B. Ask the experts for help
C. Go to the special treatment center
D. Free them of their human right to play
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the social media?
A. Doubtful B. Supportive C. Neutral D. Indifferent
35. Which of the following statements does the author agree with ?
A. Parents should let children learn about social media on their own.
B. The world is ending as a result of the negative effects of social meaia.
C. Parents should be cautious when regulating children’s using social media.
D. Parents are advised not to give kids helmets when they learn to ride a bike.
