Simply Unmissable: Most Beautiful Places in Sicily
Taormina
If you want a true taste of pleasure and luxury, Taormina is the perfect destination for it. You’ll find rows of shops and first-class restaurants with a backdrop of sweeping views of Mount Etna. The whole town feels more modern compared to the medieval (中世纪的) winding roads and broken castles in the surrounding cities, but Taormina has breathtaking ruins to see as well. The Greek theater ruins are a must-see, and there is Greek-influenced architecture everywhere you look.
Palermo
Palermo is Sicily’s capital city, a historically important trade port that was taken over by many of the surrounding countries throughout history. You can look for the signs of Sicily’s past conquerors (占领者) in the present-day architecture. The Palermo Cathedral, with Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic and Modern influences, is a great example of competing architectural styles within one building. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, head to the Catacombs of the Capuchins, where 8000 dead bodies between the 17th and 19th centuries are on display.
Mount Etna
A trip to Sicily’s east coast wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Mount Etna. It looks extremely impressive from afar, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy Europe’s largest active volcano up-close as well. Take a cable-car to the top, explore the dramatic valleys and be amazed at the lava (熔岩) flows. In the winter, you can also ski down with a glass of Etna Rosso, a wine that’s made in this area. The grapes are grown in volcanic soil, resulting in bright and red wines.
21. What can you probably find in Taormina?
A. Broken castles. B. Amazing ruins. C. Active volcanoes. D. Unique wines.
22. Why is Palermo’s architecture a mixture of various styles?
A. Because Palermo is the capital city of Sicily.
B. Because the authorities have a passion for varieties.
C. Because it copies those of the surrounding countries.
D. Because Palermo used to be occupied by many other countries.
23. Which of the following is typical of Mount Etna?
A. Coast and theaters. B. Shops and restaurants.
C. Volcano and wines. D. Dead bodies and grapes.

It was about 10:15 p.m. Janice Esposito got off the train at the Bellport, New York, got into her car and began driving home. She had traveled the route so many times that she almost drove automatically: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then-bang! Out of nowhere a car crashed into Esposito’s car, pushing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. Injured but mostly shocked by the crash and by the airbags that popped up, she got stuck in the vehicle.
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed when he heard the crash coming from not far outside his bedroom window. DiPinto, a volunteer firefighter, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed out.
The first car he came upon, 2, 000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once making sure the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito’s car straddling (跨坐) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a bell sound, which signalled a coming train.
DiPinto rushed to Esposito’s car and hit on the driver’s side window. She just looked at him. "I don’t know where I am," she said.
"You’re on the railroad tracks," DiPinto yelled. "We have to get you off right now!" The train was traveling at a speed of 65 miles per hour toward them. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened due to the crash, so DiPinto ran to the passenger side. He threw open the door, pushed aside the airbags, seized Esposito’s arms, and pulled her toward him across the passenger seat until he finally got her out and walked her to safety as quickly as he could.
Within seconds, the train crashed into the car. "It was like a Hollywood movie," DiPinto told reporters the next day.
"Last night," said Greg Miglino Chief of the South County Ambulance, "the hero arrived in pajamas (睡衣), not in a fire truck."
24. What led to the happening of Esposito’s accident?
A. The fast speed of her car. B. A crash of another car.
C. Her absence of mind while driving. D. Her unfamiliarity with the road conditions.
25. Why was the situation so dangerous?
A. Esposito was to be hit by the train. B. The driver’s door couldn’t be opened.
C. The two drivers were both badly injured. D. A passenger in Esposito’s car was unconscious.
26. How was Esposito saved?
A. The train was made to stop. B. A fire truck was called for rescue.
C. She was out of the car with DiPinto's help. D. Some passers-by came to her assistance.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A train crashed into a car.
B. A firefighter managed to become a hero overnight.
C. A woman’s car broke down on the railroad tracks.
D. A firefighter saved a woman from a following accident.
C
Scientists are working to stop a deadly virus that infects pigs. This African swine flu (猪流感) virus is causing huge losses for farmers in China and other Asian countries. Many farmers have tried to contain it by destroying infected animals. But the spread of the disease into East Asia has stepped up the search for other ways to deal with the problem.
The virus had not been considered a major concern for researchers until it appeared in China last year. Chinese farmers raise about half of the world’s pigs. Some researchers think the virus might have come from infected animals in Eastern Europe or Russia. Since then it has spread to China, Vietnam and other Asian countries. Millions of pigs have been destroyed.
Although swine flu does not sicken people, it is very infectious and deadly to pigs. As the deadly virus kills pigs across Asia, scientists are speeding up efforts to develop a vaccine (疫苗). "Today’s situation, where you have this global danger, puts a lot more emphasis on it," said Doctor Luis Rodriguez, who leads the United States government laboratory for foreign animal diseases.
Vaccines are often developed by killing a virus before it is put into an animal. The disabled virus does not make the animal sick, but it activates the body’s natural defenses against disease. The immune system is then able to identify the virus and produce antibodies against it. However, this method is not effective with all viruses including the one that causes African swine flu. For swine flu, scientists have been working on a different kind of vaccine. It is made from a weakened virus, not a dead one. The problem for researchers has been how to change the virus so it can be safely used.
Vietnam’s government reported a few weeks ago that it was testing vaccines, but provided few details. In China, the government says scientists are working on a vaccine that genetically changes the virus, which is similar to a method being used by scientists in the US.
28. What caused the researchers’ deeper concern?
A. The virus’ appearance in China. B. The disease’s damage to people’s health.
C. The death rate of pigs all over the world. D. The failure of vaccine’s development.
29. What does "it" refer to in paragraph 3?
A. Developing a vaccine. B. Curing the infected pigs.
C. Finding the origins of the virus. D. Studying the harmful effects on people.
30. What can we learn about the vaccines for African swine flue?
A. They are developed from a dead virus.
B. Regular developing methods apply to them.
C. China and the U.S. have different methods of developing them.
D. The genetic change of the virus may be a breakthrough for the vaccines.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Government Places Much Stress on Virus Research
B. Swine Flu Leads to the Deaths of Lots of Pigs
C. Scientists Hurry to Develop Vaccine for Swine Flu
D. Research on Animal Diseases Makes Great Progress
D
A bird called hermit warbler breeds (繁殖) along the U. S. West Coast. They all kind of look the same and they have a cute little yellow head and a gray body. Typically, birds sing the same one song within one region because the song attracts mates. And different regions can have slightly different dialects of the song. But recently biologists noticed that there are some places that are exceptions to this rule-in some places, there is more than one song in the same place.
"So we were curious why that would be the case." Brett Furnas, a bio-statistician at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said.
To investigate, Furnas and his team recorded lots of hermit warbler’s songs. In 10 years, they went to 100 different locations throughout the state and all the different potential habitats of the species. The researchers analyzed all the hermit warbler songs they collected and discovered that the hermit warbler doesn’t just break the usual one-song-per-region rule-they positively demolish it, for the researchers found, actually, an amazing 35 different dialects across the state.
But why would the bird repeatedly "alter its song" when any changes could affect its ability to attract a mate? Basically, hermit warblers are very sensitive to fire in the short term, so they will abandon an area temporarily, even if it’s just a low-severity fire that doesn’t destroy the whole stand. And then other hermit warblers singing different dialects move into this area. And then they end up, maybe a few years later, with two or more different dialects in the same place.
Furnas says that such musical diversity might actually work in the hermit warblers’ favor. "They may have greater resiliency (恢复力) to things like climate change. So understanding that helps us to make better conservation decisions to protect biodiversity. But it’s also what makes the outdoors interesting and a beautiful place to be, because even though you might not know it’s a hermit warbler, your experience outdoors is enriched by that diversity."
32. What is the purpose of Furnas’ research on hermit warbler?
A. To figure out how the bird breeds. B. To study the one-song-per-region rule.
C. To find why its songs differ within one region. D. To investigate different habitats of the bird.
33. What does "demolish" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. To show the rule is wrong. B. To prove the rule to be true.
C. To explain what the rule means. D. To make the rule difficult to understand.
34. Why does hermit warbler frequently have its song "changed"?
A. Because of the food shortage. B. Because of the less-severe wildfire.
C. Because of the need to attract a mate. D. Because of the competition for habitats.
35. What does the last paragraph talk about?
A. The effect climate change has on birds.
B. The importance of biodiversity protection.
C. The ways to enrich your outdoor experience.
D. The significance of the musical diversity of hermit warbler.

How To Make Exercise A Habit That Sticks
Maybe you can relate to this: You are determined to get more exercise. And you do-for a while. But a few days or weeks into a new routine, your good intentions fall apart. 36 We asked Katy Milkman, a professor at the Wharton School of Business who studies human decision-making. She gave us six tips to help people develop better, longer-lasting exercise habits.
37
There’s no magic number of days it takes to build a new habit, but the key to habits is repetition. So, give it a month, and research suggests that this can help you build a new routine. Moreover, if you can get that repetition going while you have high motivation, you’re much more likely to have a behavior change that lasts.
Make it social.
38 The same goes for working out. If you compare your exercise habits with neighbors or co-workers, you may be more motivated to go to the gym. Or schedule your exercise with a friend. You’ll be more likely to show up.
Let flexibility be your friend.
The people who worked out at the same time every day, they did actually form a more lasting habit around exercising at that time. But here’s the hidden disadvantage: 39 Milkman says, "We actually found that it would be more effective if people built a more flexible routine."
Set goals-but don’t let them trap you.
Make sure your exercise objective is achievable and ambitious. 40 Milkman explains, The risk of target is that if they're tough, and then you don’t make it, you will go crazy and actually be worse off. So give yourself chance to start over if you miss a trip to the gym.
A. But give yourself a free pass or two if you fail to meet it.
B. Commit to about four weeks of daily exercise.
C. Combine a real pleasure that you look forward to with your workouts.
D. That was the only time they ever worked out.
E. Losses are about twice as motivating as gains of equal size.
F. Research shows that habits-good and bad-spread through our social networks.
G. How do you bridge the divide between intention and action?

Kyle crumpled (弄皱) another picture to throw it in the wastebasket. He had been trying to draw a sports car like Uncle Lou’s. But nothing he drew turned out right. He was a little upset.
His teacher, Mrs. Lee, noticed him and looked over his shoulder. "What’s wrong, Kyle?" she asked gently.
"I want to draw a sports car," Kyle said. "But I can never make it look good. Is there a secret to being an artist?"
Hearing this, Mrs. Lee was silent for a moment, and then said, "Yes, there is a secret. But I won’t tell you unless you make a bet with me. Draw that car again, and give it to me when you’re done. Then, every day, do a drawing. Hand one in to me each day for four weeks. Then I’ll tell you the secret. It’s a bet. Agreed?"
Thinking for a while, Kyle agreed. After all, he liked drawing very much. Then he drew Uncle Lou’s car again. It didn’t look right. The front wheels were bigger than the back wheels. He wanted to crumple it, but he handed it in to Mrs. Lee.
The next day, Kyle drew another car. The four wheels were almost of the same size, but he couldn’t get the mirrors right. He sighed. The idea of giving up came into his mind. But thinking of their bet, he changed his mind. He handed it in anyway. Receiving Kyle’s picture, Mrs. Lee nodded and encouraged him to draw as much as he would like.
Every day, Kyle spent a lot of time drawing the car. Whenever he could, he drew. Wherever he went, he drew. He gave all the pictures to Mrs. Lee, no matter how bad they were. Day by day, Kyle started to feel like drawing more, showing greater passion for it.
