On Sundays after breakfast my dad always wore that gray apron(围裙) -the one with race cars all over it. The daily routine began. Dad announced. "Go ahead, everyone. I'll take care of the dishes!" For the next hour, Dad would do the dishes, singing ballads like "I Had a Hat When I Came In." I supposed it was unusual for a boy's dad to wear an apron - even one with race cars - but I never thought much of it until the day when Dad broke with tradition.
It was the last Sunday in August. As we took a walk together, my dad seemed very happy.
"Tommy," he said letting my name roll off his tongue. "There comes a time in every boy's life when he must take on more responsibilities. It's time you took a greater role in the family.
From now on, I want you to do the dishes on Sunday mornings, then your mom and I can play crossword puzzle together."
"The dishes?"
"Anything wrong, son?" Dad said.[来源:学。科。网]
I wanted to say something about a man's job or woman's work, but I knew immediately that my protests would be turned down.
I didn't taste a bit of breakfast that morning. Dad seemed joyful as he described an American game. At the end of the meal, he announced: "Let's go to read the paper, honey."
"Aren't you doing the dishes?" Mom asked in surprised. Dad smiled and said, "Your oldest son has offered to fill the position."
"I want you to have apron on, Tommy. It'll keep your clothes from getting wet."
And before I could go against it, he had already put the thing on me. "Thanks, Son. Your mom and I would appreciate this." Then he disappeared into the Sunday paper. And I had to deal with the dished, feeling depressed.
But when I remembered that Dad was always willing to help us to do all kinds of housework without complain, my anger gradually flew off and I began to sing, just as he used to.
