录音原文
Text 1
W: Have you heard of Thomas Edison?
M: Sure. He was an inventor who invented the light bulb.
W: That’s right. He invented the world’s first long-lasting light bulb. And actually he had an inspiration because he’s afraid of the dark!
M: Really? Interesting!
Text 2
M: Mom, it’s getting dark. Where is our cat? Does he stay out at night?
W: Don’t worry. He’ll come back when he gets hungry.
Text 3
W: Welcome to our show, Mr. Johnson. So what advice do you give to young people on starting a business?
M: Well, most of my failures have come from trying to sell something that people didn’t want. So my advice is to do your homework to find out what people want.
Text 4
M: Wayne is sick today. Can you come to the office?
W: But it’s my day off today.
M: I know. I’ll pay you extra.
W: OK, OK. I’m going to walk to my car. See you soon.
Text 5
W: Where do your grandparents come from?
M: My mom’s parents were born in the US, but my dad’s parents come from Turkey. How about you?
W: I think all my grandparents come from Germany.
Text 6
W: Look, there’s a snack bar. Let’s go now!
M: Okay, what food do you want to try?
W: ⑥I am going to eat the gado-gado.
M: ⑥What’s that?
W: ⑥It’s a traditional Indonesian salad with peanut sauce. What about you?
M: Hmm… I have no idea.
W: Do you want noodles, vegetables, or rice?
M: ⑦I’d like to have some vegetables. Do you know if there are any spicy vegetable dishes?
W: ⑦You could get an Indian or Thai vegetable curry.
M: ⑦I’ll have a shot.
Text 7
M: ⑧So, what are you getting Thomas for his birthday?
W: ⑧I haven’t come up with anything yet. If you were me, what would you buy?
M: What about a T-shirt? You can go to buy a special T-shirt for him. It’s comfortable enough to wear for work and travel as well.
W: But I got him one last year. I want to get something different for him this year.
M: All right. Let me think. ⑨How about a briefcase? He can use it to carry his documents. And it’s not so expensive.
W: Good idea. His briefcase is getting too old.
M: ⑨And it’s something he can use every day, I guess.
W: Of course. Why not do some shopping right now?
Text 8
W: I heard the news that someone who had plastic surgery is unable to make certain facial expressions now.
M: Oh my goodness. ⑩I don’t suppose plastic surgery is the way to get better, which may have side-effects.
W: ⑩I’m sorry I can’t agree with you. Everyone has the right to be beautiful, whether it is to gain confidence or to repair a flaw in oneself.
M: Sounds reasonable. Nowadays many people judge a book by its cover. So why do you think many people would like to have plastic surgery?
W: ⑪I guess some may change their fortunes through plastic surgery and some may pursue the trend of it in order to keep up with others. But for most people, it is to gain confidence.
M: ⑫Well, coffee time is over. Let’s stop to work.
Text 9
W: What did you think of Katrina next door?
M: She was very quiet compared to her husband.
W: Oh yeah. ⑬Michael is a party animal.
M: Do you mean he behaves like an animal? I think he’s charming.
W: No. ⑬I mean he likes to go to parties and make friends. He calls his wife a bookworm. Apparently his wife’s academic standard is high.
M: Yes. Katrina reads a lot too. She likes Russian literature.
W: Yes, we had a long conversation about Tolstoy. She had just read Anna Karenina. ⑮And I heard her next novel would be published next month.
M: Oh, amazingly. I thought she taught at a school.
W: ⑭She used to be a teacher at our little boy’s school. But now she works at home. She often looks tired. ⑯She always gets up early in the morning to prepare food. And Michael always has an excuse to refuse to do housework.
M: Oh, man! ⑯Katrina sounds like a lark. And Michael is a cuckoo.
W: I’ve never heard these expressions before. What do you mean?
M: ⑯A lark gets up early. It’s a cuckoo that means a crazy person.
Text 10
W: ⑰And now, Words and Their Stories, from VOA Learning English.
Sweat. Those tiny drops of liquid that make up part of our body’s cooling system.
⑱We sweat when we do hard physical work. For example, running is a great way to work up a sweat.
⑱We also sweat when it’s hot outside.
⑱Sweating can also be a sign that you are unsure of your ability. That is why one popular advertisement for underarm deodorant had this famous expression: “Never let them see you sweat.”
⑱⑲Finally, sweating could be seen as a sign that you are lying. If you watch crime shows, sweating is one thing police look for when they question a suspect of a crime.
Here is another strange expression: “Don’t sweat it.” This is a way of saying “no problem” or “don’t worry about it.” One time, my roommate and I decided to get rid of stuff and make a little money. It was a really hot day. So, I took off my favorite jacket and set it aside. By the end of the morning, I couldn’t find it. My roommate asked me, “Was it the black jacket with lightning on it?” “Yes,” I answered. She quietly said, “I think I sold it.” I could tell that she felt badly. So, to make her feel better I said, “Don’t sweat it! It’s not a big deal. Come on, let’s order pizza and drinks!” ⑳Inside, though, I must admit... I was a little upset. It was my favorite jacket.
⑰And that’s it for this Words and Their Stories. I’m Anna Matteo.
