Researchers fund hw parents’ cmmunicatin styles help their yung children t develp language skills. Daniel Yurvsky, prfessr in psychlgy at Carnegie Melln University and his team develped a methd t experimentally evaluate hw parents use what they knw abut their children's language when they talk t them. They fund that parents have extremely exact mdels f their children's language knwledge, and use these mdels t tune (调正)the language they use when speaking t them.
“We have knwn fr years that parents talk t children mre differently than t ther adults in a lt f ways. Fr example, simplifying their speech, repeating wrds and stretching ut vwel sunds.” said Yurvsky. “That helps yung kids get a tehld int language, but whether parents change the way they talk as children are learning language, gives children language input that is ‘just right’ fr learning the next thing.”
Yurvsky and his team cntinued t study t understand exactly hw parents tune their interactins t match their child's speech develpment. The team develped a game where parents helped their children t pick a specific animal frm a set f three. Half f the animals in the matching game were animals that children typically learn befre age 2, like cat and cw. And the ther half were animals that are typically learned later such as peacck and lepard. The researchers asked 41 child-adult pairs t play the game. They measured the differences in hw parents talked abut animals they thught their children knew and thse they thught their children did nt knw.
They fund parents had an unbelievable exact knwledge f their child's language because they had watched them grw and learn. These results shwed that parents leveraged (利用) their knwledge f their children’s language develpment t fine-tune the infrmatin they prvided.
“We fund that parents nt nly used what they already knew abut their children's language knwledge befre the study, but als that if they fund ut they were wrng-their child didn't actually knw ‘lepard’ fr example-they changed the way they talked abut that animal the next time arund” said Yurvsky. "Right nw we train language mdels by giving them all f the language data we can get ur hands n all at nce. But we might d better if we culd give them the right data at the right time, keeping it at just the right level that they are ready fr. " Yurvsky added.
