Bert Katz, my father-in-law, celebrated his 90th birthday in November 2016. Bert loved sports and was an enthusiastic Yankees (an American professional baseball team based in the New York City) fan, so it was no wonder that over the years, he was a faithful listener to WEAN radio and, in particular, the afternoon show hosted by Mike Francesa.
Bert had health issues in his later years that limited his mobility, and when he lost his eyesight three years ago, his attachment to his radio and Francesa became more pronounced. He just loved listening to Mike talk about sports and his Yankees each afternoon. Those hours brought him so much pleasure.
Of course, Mike will be leaving Dec. 15, 2017 after 30 years at the station. Mike lives in the same community where I work on Long Island, and I have gotten to know him over the past 20 years. So when my father-in-law was approaching his special birthday the year before last year, I asked Mike for a favor: to call Bert and wish him a happy birthday.
Mike agreed without hesitation. Two days before the special day, Mike stopped at my workplace. I called Bert at his nursing home and put Mike on the phone. It was a complete surprise to Bert. Mike spent more than 10 minutes wishing Bert a happy birthday and, of course, talking about the Yankees.
When my family celebrated Bert’s birthday two days later, he couldn’t stop talking about the phone call. Over his lifetime, he said it was one of the nicest things anyone had ever done for him. Unfortunately, Bert’s health declined last year and he passed away on July 13, 2017. But even in his final months in the hospital and nursing home, he always had a radio set to WFAN to listen each afternoon to Mike Francesa. And he also had the memory of that special phone call for his 90th birthday.
24. What habit did Bert keep for years?
A. Playing baseball. B. Listening to a sports program.
C. Checking his eyesight regularly. D. Leading organized cheering for the Yankees.
25. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Obvious. B. Unusual. C. Important. D. Understandable.
26. Which of the following best dscribes the author?
A. Honest and generous. B. Considerate and insightful.
C. Patient and hardy. D. Independent and determined.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A Special Gift B. The Call Finally Arrived
C. The Big Dream Came True D. An Unforgettable Birthday Party
C
Unusually bright light in the sky that appeared suddenly last June has got astronomers in great excitement. After months of study, they still aren’t sure what the object — universally referred to as the “Cow” — is. Whatever it is, says astronomer Liliana Rivera Sandoval of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, “It’s super strange and we are obsessed with its study.”
The Cow first appeared in telescope observations on 16 June 2018, in what turned out to be a small galaxy about 200 million light years away. “When we saw that we thought, let’s get on this,” says Daniel Perley, an astronomer at Liverpool John Moores University.
The early observations confirmed the Cow was truly strange. It didn’t show the obvious changes in its light output that an exploding star would make. Sandoval says as soon as she and colleagues knew the Cow was truly distant, they requested time on NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory to see what the Cow was doing in X-rays. Although the X-ray brightness varied over the early weeks, “the spectrum (光谱) didn’t change, which is very unusual,” she notes. After 3 weeks, the X-ray signal began to vary more wildly while also dropping off in brightness.
Many astronomers agree that the long and steady duration of the event means that it was powered after an initial explosion by some form of central engine. But what that engine may be is also far from clear. Some argue that it could be a very unusual star whose central part has collapsed (坍塌) inward after it exploded. Others say it is a tidal disruption event — a star being torn apart by a black hole. But that usually requires the supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy, and the Cow is situated in its galaxy’s arm. So, some say, it could be a tidal disruption event generated by an intermediate mass black hole, although evidence for the existence of such smaller black holes remains controversial. “All explanations have problems,” Sandoval says, “I hope there are more Cows.”
28. What is astronomers’ main concern about the Cow?
A. When it appears. B. How it forms.
C. What it is. D. Where it is from.
29. What can be inferred in Paragraph 3?
A. The Cow is a not typical exploding star in the galaxy.
B. The changes of the X-rays brightness proved the Cow was unique.
C. The Cow is not far from the Earth and easy to study.
D. The X-ray test helped find accurate features of the Cow.
30. What do Sandoval’s words at the end of the text probably mean?
A. The research results help little. B. More Cows will appear.
C. Extra attention should be paid to the Cow. D. More information is needed.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Astronomers conducted an intriguing experiment at NASA.
B. The Cow has aroused astronomers’ passion in its research.
C. There exists a wide range of changes in the galaxies.
D. The discovery of the Cow is a great achievement.

There have been many problems with our schools today, the biggest of which is closely related to our culture. In general, our culture, as represented in the media, gets excited by famous stars, and constantly stresses that it’s what you have, not what you are, that counts. Parents are encouraged to be away from even very small children for most of the day. Too many voters go for politicians who would rather cut school funding than to get rid of tax cuts for the wealthy. All contribute greatly to the problems of educating our children.
Today’s teachers have to deal with a culture that is vastly different than in the past. They report that there is, among more children than ever, a lack of motivation, no drive to succeed or even try. The role models that boys view in the media mostly consist of men in comedies and other shows who are rude and often extremely immature; self-centered overpaid athletes; men in movies, television dramas, video games, etc. who are preoccupied with violence and power. As Leonard Sax wrote in “Boys Adrift”, “Teenage boys are looking for models of mature adulthood, but we no longer make any collective effort to provide such models.” Girls are attacked not only with such annoying images of males, but also with women who are preoccupied with appearance and are extremely materialistic.
In such a cultural environment, it is more important than ever to have responsible, loving and caring parents who have enough time and motivation to devote to their children and see to it as their duty to model for them and raise them with high standards of honesty and responsibility along with tending to their physical needs. They need to care enough to see that their children are not attacked with the garbage that comes from movie, television and computer screens. In today’s culture, they are basically alone in this effort since, unfortunately, so much is working against them.
Until we, as a culture, face the truth about ourselves — that we are not providing adequately for a great many of our children — the storm will continue to rage over our education system.
32. How is paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By showing differences.
C. By describing a process. D. By using time order.
33. What does today’s culture probably bring to the children?
A. Narrow access to entertainment. B. Poor understanding abilities.
C. Few materialistic models. D. Inadequate desire for success.
34. In what way should parents do in today’s culture?
A. They should dedicate more to their children.
B. They should find honest models for their children.
C. They should keep their children away from computers.
D. They should help their children develop motivation.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards today’s culture?
A. Positive. B. Ambiguous. C. Dissatisfied. D. Approving.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
One of the common complaints we hear from the people around us are problems they are facing. Every day and everywhere there are problems. Many times we find it hard to stay happy. When one problem is solved, another one comes up. How to solve them? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:
● Get the facts.
Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wondering around in confusion. It is not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high.
36
When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 37 You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.
● 38
Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I’m going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.
● Act on that decision.
39 How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry. 40 If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “It is so; it can’t be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.
A. Analyze the facts.
B. Accept what can’t be avoided.
C. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.
D. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.
E. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back.
F. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.
G. Unless you take your action, all your face-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Missy,” I cried to my wife, “did you put the banana skin on my desk?” “No, honey, Meghan probably did,” As I’d feared, she had missed my real purpose of the question which was to make it clear to her that she hadn’t done her job: defend my desk against the invader — our naughty girl. I abandoned the conversation.
I sat here at the desk, and stared at the screen. I waited patiently for ideas to come to me, exam questions for a test I would give my English students. My wife was off to a reunion somewhere, but I was not alone. Meghan, our 22-month-old daughter, kept me company. Yet her plans that day seemed to go against mine.
She followed a daily routine that was both time-consuming and challenging. It included certain basic tasks: watching the fish, sweeping the carpet in her room, climbing up and down her bed.
At first I could concentrate on designing my test paper. But I was soon distracted. I had not counted on the arrival of the “bib-bibs” (“Bib-bibs” were birds). “Bib-bibs, bib-bibs!” Meghan screamed
excitedly, her eyes alive with expectation. She insisted that I go with her to the window.
“In a second, just let me finish this question,” I said. She pulled me by the hand (two fingers, actually) toward the window. I saw myself as a fool, being led to watch the bib-bibs. And we did watch them. They chattered and leaped back and forth on the lawn just outside our apartment window. Meghan was absorbed, but as I watched them, I still thought about my work.
Suddenly she rushed out from the room, and I heard her naked feet slapping against the wooden floor outside. She returned with her doll, Dumpty. She held him up to the window, stretching him out by his two arms and whispering into his nonexistent ear. “Bib-bibs, Dumpty, bib-bibs!” Then I left them in conversation and returned to my desk.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

读后续写范文
Unfortunately, she soon came again, with her shoes in hands and preparing for an outing. “Don’t even ask, Meghan. Not today.” I knew her plan too well: First the shoes. Then the stroller. And pretty soon we were in the park the way she always did. Having sensed my impatience with her, Meghan put down the shoes, tugged at my sleeve with her free hands and pleaded using her muttering baby talk. “No, Meghan,” I said again. “Not now. Go away and leave me alone.” Finally, she left. She made no further attempt to bother me. Then I tried to concentrate on the test paper without interference.
Out of the corner of my eye I could see the little girl sobbing because I didn’t have time for her. She stood with her back against the sofa, watching me type and slowly brushing the tip of Dumpty’s arm across her nose for comfort. Obviously Dumpty was doing my job to keep her company. I suddenly felt guilt growing inside me. “Meghan, I feel like taking a walk down to the park. I was wondering if you would care to join me.” Hearing this, she laughed excitedly and began the frantic search for her shoes. I knew I should put aside my work and go right at the moment while bib bibs still sparked wonder and while my girl thought that a walk with her father was a gift beyond measure.
