    Prcedures
    I. Warming up
    1. Read the letter t Miss Wang and find ut what was upsetting Lisa.
    2. Listen t what Miss Wang says, and then answer the questins in Exercise 2.
    3. Listen t the tape again and try t spell ut the missing wrds in Ex 3.
    II. Talking abut designing a questinnaire
    Wrk in grups f fur. Design a questinnaire t find ut what kind f friends yur classmates are. Ask the Students t use the quiz in the Warming Up as an example.
    Nte: The students shuld be talking while they are ding the task. This prvides the students with the pprtunity t practise expressing thught and cncern in matters f immediate cncern and interest. Tell the students t fllw these steps:
    Step1: In yur grup, cme up with fur situatins amng friends. Design fur questins accrdingly with three pssible answers.
    Step2: Put the fur questins tgether and frm a questinnaire.
    Step3: Check the questinnaire thrugh and try it ut n yur wn grup.
    Step4: Share yur questinnaire with anther grup and try each ther’s questinnaires.
    Sample questinnaire:
    This questinnaire has fur questins, and each questin is fllwed by a set f pssible answers. Please read the questins, and then cnsider which respnse fits yu best.
    1.Why am I clse friends with this persn nw?
    A.Because being friends with him/her helps me feel imprtant.
    B.Because my friend wuld be upset if I ended the relatinship.
    C.Because he/she is smene I really enjy sharing emtins and special events with.
    2. Why d I spend time with my friend?
    A.Because my friend wuld get mad at me if I didn’t.
    B.Because it is fun spending time with him/her.
    C.Because I think it is what friends are suppsed t d.
    3.Why d I listen t my friend’s prblems, r t what my friend has t say?
    A.Because my friend praises me and makes me feel gd when I d.
    B.Because it’s interesting and satisfying t be able t share like that.
    C.Because I really value getting t knw my friend better.
    4.Why d I keep prmises t my friend?
    A.Because I believe it is an imprtant persnal quality t live up t my prmises t a friend.
    B.Because it wuld threaten ur friendship if I were nt trustwrthy.
    C.Because I wuld feel bad abut myself if I didn’t.
    Scring Sheet:

    ☆ 7~9 pints: Yu are a gd friend but yu smetimes let yur friendship becme t imprtant, r yu fail t shw enugh cncern fr yur friend’s needs and feelings. Try t strike a balance between yur friend’s needs and yur wn respnsibilities.

    III. Guided writing
    1.Read the letter t the editr frm Xiadng and make sure yu knw what prblem Xiadng has.
    2.Discuss in grups f fur. Think what advice yu can give Xiadng.
    3.Write yur advice t Xiadng as an editr individually.
    Sample writing:
    Dear Xiadng,
    Sme peple like talking with thers, but sme peple are shy. If yu fall int the secnd grup, it can be hard t make friends. But yu can change the situatin.
    What are yu interested in? If yu like basketball, fr example, yu culd talk with sme f yur classmates wh like basketball. The easiest way t start talking t peple is t find smething yu have in cmmn.
    If yu are standing beside a grup f yur classmates, jin in their discussin if yu knw smething abut the subject they are discussing. But if yu dn’t, yu shuldn’t feel afraid t say, fr example, “That sunds interesting, what is it abut?” Once yu start talking t ne persn, it will get easier t talk t thers.
    Find ne persn yu have smething in cmmn with, and nce yu becme friends with him, his friends will start talking t yu t.
