Language Pints
It’s n understatement t say that e-mail has had a prfund effect n ur prfessinal and persnal lives. Peple thusands f miles away frm each ther can send and receive detailed dcuments within mere secnds. This allws us t take n prjects that wuldn’t have been practical r pssible nly a few years ag. It has becme rutine fr us t crrespnd and exchange files with peple verseas. The nly bstacle is the difference in time znes. But n the ther hand, e-mail can eat up a substantial prtin f ur wrkday. Mst f the time and effrt invlved is ging thrugh unslicited messages and separating the gd frm the bad. But nt all unslicited messages are spam.
E-mail, a Blessing and Annyance
Fr the blessing: E-mail is a cnversatin that des nt require an immediate respnse (like a telephne). If smene calls yu n the telephne, yu pick it up (unless yu have an answering machine, vice mail r yu are just plain rude) and the cnversatin begins. This is an interactive cnversatin. With e-mail, yu send a message and then wait fr a respnse. The respnse may cme in five minutes r it may cme in five days. Either way, it’s nt an interactive cnversatin. If a hundred peple send yu e-mails in ne day, s what? Yu dn’t have t talk with all ne hundred. Just think f all the hells, gdbyes and ther unnecessary chit-chat yu can avid. With e-mail, yu nly deal with their messages (which usually mit hells, gdbyes and such) and yu deal with them n yur wn time. That’s the blessing.
Nw fr the annyance: T many e-mail users assume that the minute smene receives an e-mail, the persn will read it. Bad assumptin. If yu schedule a meeting fr an hur frm nw and send an e-mail t each participant, the chance that all the participants will read that message within the hur will be pretty small. On the ther hand, if yu schedule the meeting fr the next day, the chance that they will read the message will be pretty high. Remember, e-mail is nt designed fr immediate respnse (that’s why yu have a telephne), it’s designed fr cnvenience. Sme (nt all) e-mail systems have features that try t cmbat this prblem. These features (usually called “ntificatin”) will ntify yu when a persn has received yur e-mail and may als tell yu when the persn has read it (really all it can d is assure yu that the persn has lked at the first screen f the message — it has n way t knw if the persn has read the message wrd fr wrd). Referring back t the example in the previus paragraph, yu culd check t see wh has checked their e-mail befre the meeting and then telephne thse wh have nt read it.
They are typically fund at the end f sentences and will usually refer back t the previus statement.
Attachment: Smilies Since there are n facial and vice cues t help e-mail, users have cme up with smething called “smilies”. They are simple series f symbls that are pieced tgether in the e-mail text t help express the writer’s feelings. The mst cmmn example is :-) (a smiling face). Here are sme mre examples.
1. (Para. 3) If a hundred peple send yu e-mail in ne day, s what?Analysis: s what? is an infrmal expressin, which means “ Why shuld I care?”Translatin: 如果在一天内有一百个人给你发邮件,那又怎么样呢?Example: Smetimes it can take a little bit lnger, but s what?

3. (Para. 5) If yu schedule a meeting fr an hur frm nw and send an e-mail t each participant, the chance that all the participants will read that message within the hur will be pretty small. Analysis: This is a cmplex sentence. The subject and the predicate f the main clause are the chance and will be pretty small, with a that- clause t mdify the chance ; If yu schedule a meeting fr an hur frm nw and send an e-mail t each participant is an adverbial clause f cnditin.Translatin: 如果你计划从现在起的一小时后开一个会,然后给每一位与会的人 发一封电子邮件,所有与会的人都能在一小时内读到该邮件的机率 是很小的。Example: If we decide t wrk vertime this evening, the chance that we will g t the cinema will be very small.
4. (Para. 6) Referring back t the example in the previus paragraph, yu culd check t see wh has checked their e-mail befre the meeting and then telephne thse wh have nt read it. Analysis: Referring back t is a present participle phrase used as an adverbial f cnditin.Translatin: 回到上一段中提到的例子来说,你可以复核一下,了解谁在会议 开始前检视过邮件,然后你可以给没有查看过邮件的人打电话。Example: Having played Star Wars n the cmputer fr three hurs, Michael culd nt finish his paper in time.

In the United States, privacy f crrespndence is derived frm the Furth Amendment t the United States Cnstitutin and thus restricted by the requirement fr a “reasnable expectatin f privacy”. In the member states f the Cuncil f Eurpe, the privacy f crrespndence is guaranteed explicitly by Article 8 f the Eurpean Cnventin n Human Rights. N public authrity can interfere with the exercise f this right except “as is in accrdance with the law and is necessary in a demcratic sciety”.
Stp right where yu are and set aside a cuple f brain cells fr the fllwing statement: there is n such thing as private e-mail. I dn’t care what anybdy says, states, swears r whatever; there is just n such thing as private e-mail. The reasn? Keep reading. With sme e-mail systems, the e-mail administratr has the ability t read any and all e-mail messages. If this is the case where yu are lcated, yu’d better hpe that there is an hnest and respectable persn in that psitin. Sme cmpanies mnitr emplyee e-mail (I cnsider this ne f the wrst frms f censrship). The reasns fr this unpleasant behavir are that cmpany management wants t make sure that users are nt wasting time n little-things-in-life messages and that cmpany secrets are nt being leaked t utside surces. E-mail sftware is like all sftware in that ccasinally things g wrng. If this happens, yu may end up receiving e-mail that is meant fr anther persn, r yur e-mail may get sent t the wrng persn. Either way, what yu thught was private is nt private anymre.
Privacy, Are Yu Kidding?
Smewhere in the wrld there is a persn (usually a hacker) wh is able t read yur e-mail if he / she tries hard enugh. Of curse “tries hard enugh” is the key. It’s nt that simple t read anther persn’s e-mail (usually). There are (usually) security measures in place t prevent this frm happening, but n security is ne hundred percent hacker-prf. I have “usually” in parenthesis in the previus tw sentences because I’m assuming that the persn / persns wh install and perate yur e-mail system have taken the necessary precautins. Of curse, the same must als be true fr the persn / persns n the receiving end f yur e-mail. S where des this leave us? First, let me re-emphasize the initial statement: there is n such thing as private e-mail. Gt it? Secnd, dn’t send anything by e-mail that yu wuld nt want psted n the cmpany bulletin bard. If it’s safe enugh fr the bulletin bard, it’s safe enugh fr e-mail. Finally, if yu are debating whether r nt t send smething persnal by e-mail, either deliver it by hand r send it by pst.
