Boredom is something to experience. If kids don't understand this at a young age, they're in for an unpleasant surprise. School, let's face it, can be dull (枯燥的), and it isn't actually the teacher's job to entertain(娱乐) as well as educate.
In a much-read story, The Relentlessness of Modern Parenting, Claire Cain Miller referred to a recent study that found that regardless of class, income or race, parents believed that “children who were bored after school should take part in extracurricular(课外的)activities, and that parents who were busy should stop their task and draw with their children if asked."
Parents preparing for a long car ride are like army officers planning a complex land maneuver(演习)with the help of games and movies played on iPads and smartphones. What did parents in the 1970s do when kids were bored? Nothing! They let them breathe in gas fumes. And since it wasn't actually for wearing, play with the broken safety belt. If you complained about being bored back then, you were really asking for it. “Clean your room,” you might get. Was this fun? No. Was it helpful? Yes.
Because things happen when you're bored. Some of the most boring jobs I've had were also the most creative. While checking out food at the supermarket, I invented stories about people's purchases (购买之物). The man buying eggplant and a six-pack of beer at 9 p.m.: Which was the must-get thing and which the impulse (冲动) purchase? How did my former fifth-grade teacher feel about my observing her weekly purchase of cookies?
The ability to do with boredom, not surprisingly, is connected with the ability to focus. Research has shown that people with attention disorders are particularly poor in dealing with boredom.
It's especially important that kids get bored - and be allowed to stay bored-when they're young. It shouldn't be considered “a problem” to be avoided or removed by the higher-ups, but instead something kids deal with on their own. We've stopped training children to do this. Rather than teach them to understand material that is duller, teachers spend more time inventing ways to “attract” students. But surely teaching children to stand boredom will prepare them for a more realistic future.
55. What is the finding of the study mentioned by Claire Cain Miller?
A. School kids find it hard to stand boredom. B. People are too busy to draw with their kids.
C. Extracurricular activities are gaining popularity.
D. Parents are trying their best to make their kids have fun.
56. What did parents in the 1970s usually do when kids were bored on a long car ride?
A. They played with them. B. They left them alone.
C. They told them about famous movies. D. They asked them to pay attention to safety.
57.Why does the author share her experience at the supermarket?
A. To show customers' purchasing habits. B. To show what a difficult life she was living.
C. To show boredom and jobs go hand in hand. D.To show the connection between boredom and creativity.
58.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Kids have enough fun B. Life is a boring journey
C. Let kids get bored again D. Turn boredom into entertainment

Parents always glued to their mobile phones may be damaging their relationships with their kids, according to a new study.
The study warns mums and dads lost themselves in their mobiles and other digital devices they may be causing “internal tension(内部紧张), and negative interactions” with their children.
The researchers said that technology today means work and outside pressures cannot be avoided at home. But these “blurred(模糊的)boundaries” may make it difficult to devote sufficient attention to the kids.
Study lead author Doctor Jenny Radesky, a child behaviour expert, said:“ Parents are constantly feeling like they are in more than one place at once while parenting. They're still 'at work'. They're keeping up socially. They're always trying to cook dinner and attend to their kids. It's much harder to toggle between mum or dad's brain and other aspects of life because the boundaries are all blurred together. Parents are struggling to balance family time and the desire to be present at home with technology-based expectations like responding to work and other demands.”
The study involved in-depth interviews with 35 caregivers, which included mums, dads and grandmothers.
Participants continuously expressed an internal struggle between multitasking(多任务的) mobile technology use, work and children, information overload and emotional tension around family routines(常规), such as mealtime.
Some parents also reported a trickle-down effect(涓滴效应). Their emotional response to whatever they were reading on their mobile devices - whether it was a work email or bad news - sometimes affected how they responded to their children.
Dr Radesky said:“ You don't have to be available to your children 100 per cent of the time-in fact, it's healthy for them to be independent. It's also important for parents to feel valuable at work and other parts of their lives. However, we are seeing parents overloaded and exhausted(精疲力竭的) from being pulled in so many different directions."
Dr Radesky added: “Compared to traditional distractions like books, mobile technology is described as being much more demanding of attention. Kids require a lot of different types of thinking, so multitasking between them and technology can be emotionally and mentally draining(令人精疲力竭的)。We should remind parents and help them manage this conflict with ideas on how to unplug(拔掉插头)and set boundaries.”
59. What does the new study mainly pay attention to?
A. The interaction between different generations.
B. The habitual use of mobile devices by parents.
C. The problem with overuse of technology among children.
D. The influence of parents' overuse of devices on parent-child relationship.
60.What does the underlined word “toggle” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Decide. B. Exchange. C. Balance. D. Exchange.
61.What can be learned about the parents interviewed?
A. They were constantly attentive to their mobile devices.
B. They fought the boredom of parenting by multitasking.
C. They suffered from internal tension while multitasking at home.
D. They responded to their kids' attention-seeking behaviour drily.
62. What should parents do according to Dr Radesky?
A. Set boundaries between work and parenting. B. Learn to settle children's conflicts wisely.
C. Keep emotionally and mentally healthy. D. Read books instead of reading on mobile devices.
63. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A story book B. A science magazine C. A book review D. An online survey
D
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “hero”? Is it someone who wears a cape and can fly in the air? There are onscreen heroes like the superheroes in Avengers, and there are also everyday heroes in our lives.
Whether they’re championship athletes, groundbreaking(开创性的) scientists, programmers changing the world with a keyboard, firefighters rushing into burning buildings, artists creating amazing images, or rescue dogs searching for signs of life, they can be described as “heroes.”
But what makes a person a hero?
In general, a hero is someone selfless , courageous and brave. These qualities drive heroes to help others in times of need, even if they are scared. You can count on them to be there for you if something bad happens .
“The people that we set up as heroes are people that generally go above and beyond the call of duty. They do things that are extraordinary,” said Nick Carden, a psychologist at the AAPHC Renaissance center in the US.
However, why are some people heroic? Nick Carden said that heroes are made. They probably are people that have been influenced by and have been helped by or have been modeled or raised to have those as values.”
Ordinary people—just like you and me-- are heroes in their own way, simply just by doing their part for their families and communities. Cleaners, doctors, journalists, delivery workers, nurses and bus drivers--the list goes on and on .
These ordinary people help keep order in our day-to-day lives. And, sometimes, when there are emergencies, these ordinary people show courage and bravery to help complete strangers in need.
Being a hero is a universal attribute (属性)of human nature. “The decision to act heroically is a choice that many of us will be called upon to make at some point in time.” “Heroism becomes something that seems in the range of possibilities for every person, perhaps inspiring (鼓舞)more of us to answer that call,” heroism researchers Zeno Franco and Philip Zimbardo wrote in Greater Good Magazine.
Most importantly, you should try to become your own hero. Be courageous, honest and a person with integrity(正直). Once you are your own hero, you can truly do anything you set your mind to.
64. According to paragraph 2, which cannot be considered a hero?
A. A guide dog accompanying its blind owner.
B. A painter creating artwork that is worth millions of dollars.
C. A programmer developing an algorithm which can increase working efficiency.
D. A scientist developing a new medicine that can cure a certain disease.
65. What is Nick Carden’s opinion about heroes?
A. They do brave and good things based on their responsibilities.
B. They are different from normal people because they possess extraordinary abilities.
C. They do great things to help others even if no one requires them to do so.
D. They can do great things that are beyond people’s expectations.
66. Which can replace the underlined phrase “count on”?
A. Account for B. Turn on C. Ask for D. Believe in
67. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Normal people who do their duty to their families or society are responsible.
B. Only the people who are born with the attribute of being a hero can be heroes.
C. When emergencies happen, the courage of ordinary people is inspired.
D. As heroism is a quality rooted in human nature, everyone will help people in need.
68. What is the author most likely to talk about next?
A. Things we can do to become our own heroes. B. The most important qualities of heroes.
C. Reasons why having integrity is important for our life. D. Figures we can learn from to become heroes.

In July, China introduced the “double reduction (双减)” policy. It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden (负担) by reducing homework and after-school classes. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”
According to Shen, teachers now teach at a much slower pace (节奏). Students have enough time to process new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field during a biology (生物) class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development (领导力发展)’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond academic (学业的) study,” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Besides my progress, more importantly, each exam shows my weak points as well,” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind your peers (同龄人),” he said.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过7个词。
69.Why did Chinese government introduce the “double reduction (双减)” policy?
70. According to Shen Yuzhe, which is a better way to learn things?
71. How do Shen and Zhang find having fewer exams?

Reading is not only an important professional skill, but also a way for us to enjoy creative and inspiring works of literature that enrich our experiences. Like any other skills worth mastering, a reading habit requires time and devotion to develop. It is, however, a lifelong source of enjoyment for anyone who wants to pick up a book.
In order to develop your reading habit and enjoy reading to the fullest, begin practicing good reading skills. For example:
When you read, read for the main idea of each paragraph along with its supporting reasons. It can be helpful to read with a pencil in hand to write down the key idea of each paragraph so that you can quickly know the main idea when you read the book next time.
Merriam Webster online is a wonderful resource for defining unfamiliar words. Simply make a list of unfamiliar words. When you reach a good stopping point, return to each word and look it up, rereading the sentence it appeared in. This helps you guess the meaning of the word and its usage in case there are multiple meanings.
When meeting unfamiliar words or ideas, the historical or social context of the text can offer clues as to what the writer is talking about. This may require a small amount of outside research to become informed on the different levels of context presented by a text.
Reading for learning and enjoyment is never to run. Instead, take your time and develop your skills at your own pace (速度). Do not get discouraged if you are a slow reader, especially at first. Each day, as you read, your mind will take the reading strategies it learned before and apply them again, often with greater efficiency.
More importantly, you have to make reading a lifelong habit. To achieve this, you can offer to read stories or other materials for others in schools, nursing homes or even shelters for the homeless. You can also go to book festivals where you can learn about new authors and meet authors you have already known. It’s also a good idea to keep a reading blog as it is a good way to remember books you enjoy and keep track of what you’ve already read. You can also choose a new language to learn so that you can read something written in another language.

Jack worked in a factory, and at the end of last month he got his money in a paper bag. He opened the bag and found it was wrong. He got fifty more dollars. He put the money carefully in his pocket and said nothing to others. A month later, he got his money again. He found it was wrong again this time. There was not enough money in his paper bag. Then he went to see the manager. “That’s right,” said the manager after Jack told his story. “I made a mistake last month. For one mistake, I can close my eyes. But for two, I can’t. Thank you, Jack. I now know you are dishonest. I have to hire another man instead of you. I think you should be honest in the future.”
听第二篇短文,回答第16-20小题。
Have you ever been ill? When you are ill, you must be unhappy because your body becomes hot, and there are pains all over your body. You don’t want to work, you stay in bed, feeling very sad.
What makes us ill? It is germs. Germs are everywhere. They are very small and you can’t find them with your eyes, but you can see them with a microscope. They are very very small and there could be hundreds of them on a very small thing.
Germs are always found in dirty water. When we look at dirty water under a microscope, we shall see them in it. So your father and mother will not let you drink dirty water.
Germs aren’t found only in water. They are found in air and dust. If you cut your finger, if some of the dust from the floor goes into the cut, some of the germs would go into your finger. Your finger would become big and red, and you will have much pain in it. Sometimes the germs would go into all of your body, and you would have pain everywhere.
