Perhaps the most famous theory in the study of body movement was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks — we are not born with them. A baby has generally unformed facial features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around him — family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike. New Englanders or Southerners have certain common facial features that cannot be explained by genetics(遗传). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth. It is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth set in. For many people, this can happen well after they are grown up. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United Statesfor example, the South is the part of the country where people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many Southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less often than people do in small towns.

There is no clear advice on how to use your body language. What you do might be interpreted(诠释) in several ways, depending on the surroundings and who you are talking to. You'll probably want to use body language differently when talking to your boss compared to when you talk to a girl you're interested in. The following are some effective ways to improve your body language.

First, to change your body language, you must be aware of your body language. Notice how you sit, how you stand, how you use your hands and legs, and what you do while talking to someone.

You might want to practice in front of a mirror. It might seem silly but no one is watching you. This will give you good feedback(反馈) on how you look to other people and also give you an opportunity to practice a bit before going out into the world.

Another tip is to close your eyes and visualize how you would stand and sit to feel confident, open and relaxed or whatever you want to communicate. See yourself move like that version of yourself. Then try it out.

You might also want to observe friends, role models, movie stars or other people who you think have good body language. Observe what they do and you don't need to take bits and pieces you like from them. Try using what you can learn from them.

Some of these tips might seem like you are faking(假装)something. But fake it till you make it a useful way to learn something new. And remember, feelings work backwards too. If you smile a bit more you will feel happier. If you sit up straight you will feel more energetic and in control. If you slow down your movements you'll feel calmer.

5What's the purpose of the passage?

    A. To show the importance of body language.

    B. To compare spoken language with body language.

    C. To give some tips on improving body language.

    D. To introduce different kinds of body language.

6We can learn from the passage that ________.

    A. body language is not as important as spoken language

    B. movie stars and models always have good body language

    C. using more body language can make us more popular

    D. different body languages should be used in different situations

7What does the author think about practicing body language in front of a mirror?

    A. Useless.     B. Helpful.

    C. Powerful.     D. Foolish.

It has been said before, but experiencing it myself has made me want to say it again: A smile can cross all language barriers.

I __1__ (recent) moved from Canada to a small city on the south coast of South Korea to work as an English teacher. One night, after a long day at work, I was feeling particularly  __2__ (wear) out. My legs were aching and I wasn't looking forward to __3__ (cook) dinner. Just as I was about __4__(push) the key into the door, the old landlady signed me into her apartment. I didn't understand a word that she said, __5__ I understood her smile. I followed her into her kitchen, __6__ smelled like the wonderful Korean food I love. __7__ (put) many dishes of food on the table, she sat down across from me. We were both laughing the whole time at our complete inability to communicate in words.

__8__ it was time to leave, I said “thank you\” in Korean, using some of __9__ few words I had learned. I felt __10__ (little) lonely than I had expected that night.

    3cooking look forward to中的to是介词,故后接动名词。

4to push be about to do sth.
