From a young age, I’ve had a really deep connection (联系) with being outside. I’ve been skiing
since I was eight or nine years old. I’ve been on expeditions (探险) in many places like China, Pakistan and so on. But it was in my home country, the USA, that I came closest to death.
It was April 1, 2011. I was skiing in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier, both experienced snowboarders. That day, I was the last person to ski. They were watching me from a safe area. Suddenly, I heard someone cry loudly. I turned around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche (大雪崩). The kind of avalanche that destroys trees, cars, buses, even houses! Tens of thousands of tons of snow were coming straight down the mountain behind me. I felt the snow push me forward, hundreds of meters, and then cover me. It was so heavy that I couldn’t breathe. And then it pushed me forward again and up, out of the snowpack. I looked around, and for a few seconds I stopped being terrified. I had a moment to pause and to look at the power of the avalanche.
I looked down into the bottom of the valley (峡谷). I could see trees that were 30m tall, because I was so far away, they looked tiny to me.“OK, I’m going all the way to the bottom!” I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountain another 450m. I thought the force of the snow would destroy me, it was powerful. But in the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I just popped (迸出) right out of the snow at the bottom of the valley.
It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to reach me. There was a pile of debris (碎片) across the bottom of the mountain 300m wide. They couldn’t believe it when they saw me. I was so lucky.
Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don’t know, maybe. But I do know that it’s important to live your life with meaning. Life is a gift, so use it wisely.
( ) 45. What does the underlined word ‘they’ refer to (指代)?
A. The mountains. B. The trees. C. Jeremy and Xavier. D. Piles of debris.

C. The writer’s friends watched him at the bottom of the valley.
D. The writer couldn’t breathe because of the weight of the snow.
( ) 47. When was the writer thrown out of the snow?
A. When his friends reached for him. B. When he was pushed to the bottom.
C. When the avalanche started to slow down. D. When the snow drove him forward again.
( ) 48. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer doesn’t mind the matter of life or death.
B. It’s impossible for the writer to know the force of snow.
C. The writer thinks one should not live a meaningless life.
D. The writer’s experience and his friends have changed him.

Do you know electricity(电) can change the way we taste food?Don't feel surprised at the fact. A special electric fork invented by Japanese researchers could make any dish taste salty.
According to Hiromi Nakamura, a Post Doctor Researcher at Meiji University of Japan, the technology can be very useful for people with special eating habits. For example, the sick with high blood pressure (高血压) can easily develop a low-salt eating habit and still enjoy delicious food. And with the fork, there's totally no risk of over-salting their food. Luckily, the voltage (电压) is so small that it is safe to use the fork.
The idea of adding electricity to food was first shown to public as an experiment(实验) at the Computer Human Interaction Conference in Austin, Texas, in 2012. Nakamura and her team connected a wire (导线) to a 9-volt battery (电池) and passed it through a straw (吸管) placed in a cup of sweet lemonade. Volunteers reported that the lemonade tasted not as sweet as it usually was, because the electricity created the taste of salt.
Nakamura has improved the technology to be able to make the electricity reach the food through forks and chopsticks. "The metallic(金属的) part of the fork is one electrode(电极), and the handle(手柄) is the other," Nakamura explained. "When you take a piece of food with the fork and put it in your mouth, you connect the circuit(回路). When you take the fork out of your mouth, you disconnect the circuit. So it actually works as a switch(回路)."
Simon Klose, TV presenter of food program Munchies, who recently visited Nakamura to try out the fork himself, then said it was one of the greatest eating experiences he'd ever had. "When I first heard of electric food, it sounded terrible." he said. He later continued to use the fork to eat pieces of fried chicken, and found that the saltiness greatly increased as the electricity was connected.
Nakamura has been eating "electric" food for the past three to four years in order to understand it better. "For me," she said, "it may seem like we're cooking but we're actually working on the human taste."
( ) 49. The electric fork may be good for people who __________.
A. need to lose weight B. work as researchers

( ) 50. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us __________.

C. where the electric fork was invented D. when the technology was known to public
( ) 51. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The electric fork can create unreal taste.
B. A researcher from the USA invented the electric fork.
C. People can use the electric fork by pushing the switch.
D. The idea of adding electricity to food was first shown in a TV program.
( ) 52. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. A Famous Researcher. B. An Interesting Experiment.
C. A New Invention. D. A Great Eating Experience.

"Daddy, do you see Mom in your dreams?" the young girl asks. "You know sometimes I do."
"Mom comes to see me a lot, you know. We sit and talk. " the father smiles, "How is your homework coming along?"
"Why do I have to study so hard?"
"It is what Mom would have wanted!"
She feels really sorry for her words. "I'm sorry, Daddy, I shouldn't have said that." She looks up and sees his eyes well up with tears.
"It's okay, love," he gets up and pours himself a drink. "I'll just sit outside for a while. You finish up your work, okay?"
"I'm sorry, Daddy. Mom did love you very much. She told me all the time."
"Homework, first, eh? Then we can chat about Mom."
He heads off outside and sits in his usual chair, looking around the courtyard. The whole area relaxes the mind and somehow comforts the soul(灵魂).
"All finished, Daddy. May I get a drink and sit with you? I have some questions."
She comes with two drinks one for him and one for herself. He looks surprised. She never really liked him having a drink. Although he had cut back a lot from before he brought her here, it still seemed strange.
"Mom told me all about you. We would laugh together at your love stories."
He listens without making a single sound.
"Why didn't you come and take her away with you when she was ill in hospital? She really wanted that. Did you know that?"
Her father looks at his daughter lovingly. "Circumstances(情况) were difficult back then. It was just the way things were. When it came time to…" he sighs(叹息), "to visit her, it was too late."
The girl smiles. "I hope I will have the same kind of love you and Mom had."
"Without all the heartache," her father adds.
"She always knew you loved her. She told me every day," the child mentions cheerfully. "I saw her crying sometimes when she read your letters."
"Did she make you promise to look after me?" she inquires.
"She asked me to take care of you."
"You promised her, didn't you?"
"Yes, I did."
"It is nice out here, isn't it? Mom would have been very happy here."
She talks with some authority. Her father remains silent. A smile comes to his weary brow. He nods his head.
"Mom wanted me to give you something. I think now the time is right." She runs to her room. As soon as she returns, she hands her father a book. "It's Mom's diary! She wanted me to give it to you."
He takes the book and holds it in his trembling(颤抖的) hands, "Thank you."
"Mom said you would understand things better."
"Wise woman, your mother."
He places the book on the table as he gets up. The girl gets up and wraps herself around her father.
"I love you." she looks up at his face.
He picks her up and hugs her. "I love you, too." His voice trembles.
"It's okay, Daddy. We have each other now and mom is in both of us."
He kisses her head.
"Time you went to bed," her father softly says.
He puts her down and she runs away to get washed and ready for bed.
Clearing up everything, he checks on his daughter. She is in bed waiting for her good night kiss.
He tucks her in and bids her goodnight.
Just as he is to leave, she tells him. "Mom told me she adopted(收养) me when I was a baby."
He stands at her bedroom door. Words fail him. Yes, he knew she was adopted.
"I am really lucky for being loved by my parents, even if I am not really theirs."
"You are trying to bring on the water works??" he tells her.
She laughs, "Goodnight, Daddy. I love you."
"Love you, too."
His face lights up as he wipes his wet eyes.
The door closes and the child falls asleep dreaming of her mother.
Sitting outside he picks up the diary and opens it and reads the first line: "I love you, my dearest, if only things could have been different…"

Just as a famous saying g 82 , "Reading is to success what water is to fish." Reading is very important for all humans. It can open many doors and can lead you into a path to success. If you want to improve your reading, try to read as m 85 as you can. When you finish reading your first book, take another book and do the same. If you are going out, take a magazine, a book, an article or something else to read. When you are reading, try to understand w 86 message the writer is giving to you.
So, parents should help to get their children to read as early as possible. Studies have s 87 that reading to your unborn child is very good. In this way, your child will like reading later.

82. ___________ 83. __________ 84. __________ 85. __________ 86. __________ 87. __________
八、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答文后五个问题。
In the world, more and more people are studying Chinese as a second language. Chinese is too hard to learn, right? Really, written Chinese is difficult to learn! Yet the spoken language is quite different. Many famous people in the world ask their children to learn how to speak Chinese at first. When the US President Donald Trump visited China in November last year, his granddaughter Arabella sang Chinese songs and recited Chinese poems in a sweet voice in the video. President Xi Jingping praised her in public. In fact, Arabella has been learning the Chinese language since she was only eighteen months old.
Why do many famous people begin to pay more attention to (关注) learning Chinese? The first reason is that Chinese is the language spoken by the largest number of people in the world. Learn to speak Chinese and you can speak with millions of people around the world. Second, with thousands of years of history, Chinese culture is very fascinating. Learning Chinese well will help you understand Chinese culture better. Of course, there are still other reasons, such as travel and business.
All in all, it is more convenient for you to develop all kinds of relationships (关系) with China if you can learn Chinese well.
