There are two ways of driving in the world: if the driver’s seat is on the left and cars travel on the right side of the road, it is called “left-hand driving”, as it is in China, while the other way of driving, the driver’s seat is on the right and cars travel on the left side of the road, it is called “right-hand driving”, as it is in Britain. Nowadays, around 65% of the world’s population drives on the right of the road, while the rest is used to driving on the left.
Though no one knows the exact reasons, it seems likely that people in ancient times travelled on the left. Roman coins show pictures of horsemen passing on each other’s right. And right-hand people generally got on a horse from the animal’s left. Obviously, it’s safer to do this at the left side of the road, and it makes sense for the horse to be ridden on the left.
A change happened in the late 1700s. When Napoleon conquered (攻占) nations, he forced them to travel on the right side of the road, which spread left-hand driving throughout Europe. However, Britain still stuck with the right-hand driving rule and countries which were part of the British Empire were made to follow. This is why India, Australia and the former British colonies (殖民地) in Africa continue to drive on the left. One exception is Egypt, as that country was defeated by Napoleon before becoming part of the British Empire.
Some countries changed sides’ until modern times. Sweden only moved to driving on the right in 1967 and Iceland changed the following year. Ghana changed sides’ in 1974. On September 7, 2009, Samoa became the third country ever to change from left-to-right-hand driving for the reason that it made it easier to import cheap cars from right-hand driving Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
So if you want to travel to another country or go on business, make sure you know whether it is left-or right-hand driving to avoid unnecessary troubles.
24. Which picture shows the correct driving in Britain? (The word in the picture is “drive”)
A B C D
25. In ancient times, Romans ___________.
A. travelled on the right B. rode past each other’s right
C. got on the horses from the right D. behaved as they liked
26. In modern times, countries follow the same driving way except __________.
A. Iceland B. China C. Sweden D. Australia
27. What is the writer’s purpose for writing this passage?
A. To introduce the development of the two ways of driving.
B. To compare the differences of the two ways of driving.
C. To explain the advantages of the two ways of driving.
D. To complain about the change of the two ways of driving.
C
There is a day every year that most people look forward to because of a cake, balloons, presents and sometimes a party. Yes, this is your birthday. A “birthday” is described as the name given to the date of the annual event of a person’s birth. It is a tradition for people to celebrate this specific day.
In the beginning, people did not have birthday celebrations, because people did not keep very good birth records. They weren’t even sure what year they were born. And when people started to celebrate the birthday, there was no tradition of bringing gifts, and guests attending the birthday celebrations would bring good wishes for the birthday person. However, if a guest did bring gifts it was considered to be a good sign for the person of honor. Later, flowers became quite popular as birthday gifts.
Nowadays, different cultures have their own birthday celebrations. In Chinese culture, elders and family members gather around the one-year-old child and bring toys such as books, dolls and coins. It is believed that the child's future career will depend on the object that he or she picks. The Chinese consider a child a year old at birth. In Japan, people’s 3rd, 5th, and 7th birthdays are the most important, because they will get to participate in the annual “Seven-Five-Three” festival. Participants usually visit shrines (神殿) show thanks for their health and strength.
Some in Britain still practice an ancient way of celebrating birthdays by placing thimbles (顶针) and coins in the cake. The person who will get the coin will be wealthy and the one who gets the thimble will never marry. Ireland has a funny way of celebrating birthdays. It is believed that it is for good luck that a child is lifted upside down and gets “bumped” (撞击) on the floor! These bumps will depend how old the child is. An extra bump is also added for good luck
28. What’s the main purpose of the first paragraph?

The COVID-19 has changed every aspect of our lives, including our eating habits. Comfort food was made for times like these, and it seems the healthy-food trend that took root in recent years is reversing (彻底转变), at least for the time being. Shopping habits have changed. To be in favor of old processed foods like frozen pizza, hot cakes and canned spaghetti, convenience foods with long shelf life that are designed.
No judgment here. Money is tight in many households, and busy parents are putting breakfast, lunch and dinner on the table in between video conference meetings. Besides, convenience foods are engineered to taste good and make us feel good (at least in the short term).
But you might want to save room for something green on your plate, if you can find it at the store. That's because a growing body of research is showing that our food choices don't just affect our waistlines. What we eat also may affect our mood and behavior — and not in the "I can't believe I ate a dozen cookies in one sitting” sort of way. Rather, there may be something in the food we're eating (or not eating) that's influencing our state of mind.
The emerging (新兴的) field of nutritional psychology states that modern Western diets have contributed to increased rates of mental illness, particularly depression. Diets that follow a Mediterranean pattern of eating——with a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, fish and olive oil——have been connected with lower rates of depression. A diet change of just a few weeks has been found to lift moods.
As a third of all Americans are reporting that the coronavirus (冠状病毒) pandemic (流行病) has done harm to their mental health we might need nutritious food more than ever.
32. Why are convenience foods with long shelf life designed?
A. To change shopping habits. B. To meet customers' shopping habits.
C. To show the healthy food. D. To change the taste of food.
33. What does the research mentioned in paragraph 3 tell us?
A. Cookies is a kind of food you like while sitting.
B. Busy work can make you feel depressed.
C. A growing body needs proper sports.
D. Food choices may influence our mood.
34. How does the author like the Mediterranean eating diet?
A. It's connected with higher rates of depression.
B. It may cause mental illness.
C. It's healthy.
D. It includes too much fat.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Can healthy food provide relief?
B. Do food choices affect our waistlines?
C. What can contribute to mental illness?
D. How can we beat the CO VID-19?

第二节(满分25分)

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn`t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn`t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement,, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Paragraph1:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. ____________________________________

第四部分:书面表达
第一节
Dear Mr. Secretary,
I’m Li Hua, a student from Grade One. I’m writing to draw your attention to some improper behavior among us students---wasting food in the cafeteria. Some of them throw away some food while others waste most of them just because the food is not so delicious. As we all know, some people at home and abroad are going hungry seriously, I always feel painful and ashamed whenever I see this. It is obviously inappropriate for students to waste food.
In order to solve the problem, some measures should be taken by our school. First, all of the students are to raise awareness of the fact that a great number of people don’t have adequate food, which may help them realize how terrible it is for them to waste food. What’s more, I wonder if our school can set up specific regulations against such behavior, I believe the bad behavior will be got rid of soon with our joint efforts.
I hope my suggestions will be of some help. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
