Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends having at least a two-week supply of water and food.
Potatoes
● Shelf life: 2 to 5 weeks if stored in a cool, dry, dark place
Yukon Gold, red, and fingerling potatoes will last from two to three weeks. Larger white potatoes can last for three to five weeks. Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. Don’t store them next to onions, however. The two might go together well in cooking, but raw, each gives off gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster.
Tea
● Shelf life: 6 to 12 months past “sell-by” date
Dried tea leaves, whether loose(in a sealed container) or in teabags(in an unopened box) can easily last a year or more if they’re not subjected to damp or humidity. However, the tea does tend to lose flavor over time.
Peanuts
●Shelf life: 1 to 2 months
Peanuts in their shell, especially when kept cool and dry, are perfectly happy in the cupboard for as long as two months.
Canned fruits and vegetables
● Shelf life: 1 to 2 years past “sell-by” date
Canning is an extremely efficient means of preserving food. Generally speaking, if canned foods aren’t subjected to extreme heat, their contents should stay good for two years or more. Be aware, however, of dented cans or those with swollen tops, which may indicate the presence of bacteria inside.
21. Which can go bad faster if stored with onions?
A. Potatoes. B. Tea.
C. Peanuts. D. Canned fruits and vegetables.
22. What is special about tea?
A. The flavor of tea can always remain the same.
B. Tea leaves are better to be preserved in an open jar.
C. Tea leaves should be kept away from the state of being wet.
D. The maximum length of time that tea can be stored is 6 months.
23. What may shorten the “sell - by” date of canned foods ?
A. Shapes of cans. B. Categories of foods.
C. Decline of the temperature. D. Exposure to high temperature.

It was our last class before summer break. I was finishing the first year of an MFA program in poetry. I was tired and puzzled. "Was I good enough to be in the program?" When the professor asked about our summer plans,
I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle(闲散的)."Gardening," I responded immediately. Actually I knew nothing about plants! My professor nodded and said, "What a good idea, Mary! Emily Dickinson loved gardening." Emily Dickinson lived in the countryside, studying plants as a child. I was in my late twenties, living in the city without gardening experience.
A few days later, I bought a jalapeno seedling(青辣椒秧苗).At least I could say I’d tried gardening. I watered and changed the dirt for my little plant. I even talked to it. And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn't have a black thumb after all.
I started the second year of my MFA, and then it was almost December and my jalapeno was suffering. It was brown in some places; many of its leaves had fallen. Would my little guy make it? I prayed, "Please be okay," as if its survival was closely linked to mine.
I worked hard in school. Spring came. My jalapeno plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And then it flowered. I handed in my graduate paper, a book of poems, in May." Your poems are strong," my professor said.
A huge weight lifted. I'd done it ! At that time, I found the flowers on my jalapeno plant were gone. I watched closer. A tiny green fruit pushed through where a flower had been. I smiled. I had succeeded in my MFA program, and my jalapeno plant had grown right beside me, and I successfully did things I hadn't thought possible.
24. Why did the author begin gardening?
A. Just by accident.
B. Because of the love for gardening.
C. To express love for Emily Dickinson.
D. Because of the reminding of a professor.
25. When did the author begin her first gardening?
A. In her childhood.
B. In one of her summer breaks.
C. In her teens.
D. In her first year of MFA program.
26. What does the underlined phrase "a black thumb" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A talent to grow plants. B. A dirty finger to touch plants.
C. A good fortune to do everything. D. An inability to do gardening.
27. Which proverb can best describe the story above?
A. Nothing is impossible to a willing mind. B. Easier said than done.
C. It's never too old to learn. D. Do not teach fish to swim.
C
One thing in which I think I take too much pride, at times, is my academic performance. In the past, I managed to get grades on exams that were unbelievable, even to myself, for the amount of study I had done. The exam may have just happened to ask the questions to which I knew the answers, even though there were many possible questions that would have stumped me.
I’ve always done well in mathematics, but a few times, I had to step back and take a second look at how much pride I had taken in my ability. Upon receiving the score for my second exam in MATH170, I was rather disturbed. My score was 79%. I had planned to use my math courses to balance the grades I might get in my English and writing courses, so that the score was acceptable. It got worse still. In Statistics and Calculus, I received failing grades on homework assignments. Every time I got these bad grades, I felt the same. I started to think that maybe I really couldn't do these things. After giving an honest effort, however, I did better.
The thing in which I haven't had enough pride is my worth as a person with whom people like to associate. I give up opportunities to socialize because I don't think anyone will want to talk to me. Because of this trait of mine, I have very few friends. Perhaps spending the majority of my time alone isn't bad; it is what I'm used to, but I bet that by living a life of partial seclusion(隐居),I miss out on interesting and amusing life experiences that could be beneficial.
I have illustrated how the extremes of pride can be harmful. In my case, too much pride in academic ability can lead to failing grades, and not enough pride in oneself as a social individual can lead to a lonelier life. A moderate amount of pride leads to a clear view of life, allowing one to make good decisions regarding it.
28.Why did the author think he could get good grades in the past?
A. Because of hard work. B. Because of much pride.
C. Because of good luck. D. Because of high intelligence.
29. How did the author feel after exam failures?
A. A little ashamed. B. Less confident.
C. Less determined. D. A little grateful.
30. What is the author's attitude to spending most of his time alone?
A. Carefree. B. Tolerant. C. Regretful. D. Positive.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Avoid being too proud B. Change the poor character
C. Correct the bad behaviour D. Balance the pride degree
D
What about your emotions? How do they help you to understand what you are reading?
In Jane Yolan’s Owl Moon,a girl explores with her father on a snowy night. She longs for this special night. And she’s amazed when she sees an owl. Have you felt longing before? Amazement? Well, if you have, it helps you have a sense of agreement. When we can put ourselves inside a story we can understand it better. Our brain tells us, “Oh, this girl’s experience is a bit like mine.” And boom! We can relate to her. But this skill is not born in us. So young kids have to learn it.
Pictures and images help young readers to understand and recognize feelings. Readers feel joyful when seeing the smiling faces of friends. They feel fear when turning the page to find a scary monster. They are just pictures, but the feelings are real. This skill, to understand the thinking and feeling of others, is what researchers call “theory of mind”.
For example, think about the faces of people and animals in stories: The Big Bad Wolf’s scary teeth. The ‘o’ shape of a surprised character’s mouth. Or big, wide eyes like the girl in Owl Moon. By noticing the faces, readers can start to figure out what it feels like to be that character. And that helps to figure out how people feel and think in real life.
But most young readers don’t go into deep, scary woods. And some may not go to the beach or play basketball. In the book Yo!Yes? two kids meet and play ball. The kids start the story on opposite pages. But as the story goes on, they get closer until they are together. Some young readers might not play basketball, but they can read the clues on the page to figure out how the kids are feeling. And some readers might not like the game, but they can feel excited for the characters because of how the characters look and move.
32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Owl Moon talks about the exploration of the Moon.
B. The feeling of “amazement” is a sense of agreement.
C. Readers are blessed with the ability to interpret others.
D. Readers with similar experience understand the story better.
33. Which of the following might help readers develop “theory of mind”?
A. True feelings. B. Smiling faces.
C. Picture books. D. Reading skills.
34. Young readers can go deeper into a story by ________.
A. tracking the plot B. developing new skills
C. sharing similar hobbies D. analyzing the background
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. How thinking influences reading.
B. How readers improve reading skills.
C. How emotions help enhance reading.
D. How kids figure out the clues of stories.
We don’t meet people by accident. 36 Some will help you grow, some will hurt you, some will inspire you to do better. At the same time, you are playing some role in their lives as well. Know that paths cross for a reason and treat people with significance.
37 There is no better joy than helping people see a vision for themselves, seeing them go to levels higher than they ever would have imagined on their own. But that doesn’t mean you have to fix them or enable them; 38 Offer them support and motivation as they find their own way and show you what they’re capable of. All you have to do is believe in them.
Never look down on someone unless you are helping them up. We like to think of life as a meritocracy(精英统治),so it’s easy to look down on someone who isn’t as successful or accomplished or well educated as you are. But you have no idea how far that person has already climbed or where they will end up. Time could easily reverse(颠倒) your positions, 39
Appreciate those who have supported you, forgive those who have hurt you, help those who need you. 40 Treat all people -including yourself-with love and compassion, and you can’t go wrong.
Treat people the way you want to be treated and life will instantly get better.
A. so be sure you treat everyone with dignity.
B. therefore, cherish every person you meet.
C. Never fix them when they make mistakes.
D. Don’t tell them how to get there but show the way.
E. instead, guide them to the source of their own.
F. Business is complicated, life is complex and leadership is difficult.
G. Every person you meet will have a role in your life, be it big or small

详解:
A
根据小标题Potatoes中的“Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. Don't store them next to onions, however. The two might go together well in cooking, but raw, each gives off gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster.”(红薯的保质期也差不多。
根据小标题Canned fruits and vegetables中的“Generally speaking, if canned foods aren’t subjected to extreme heat, their contents should stay good for two years or more.”(一般来说,如果罐头食品不经受极端高温,其里面的食品应能保持良好两年或更久。)
B
24.【答案】A
When the professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle(闲散的).'Gardening,' I responded immediately"可知,作者开始做园艺仅仅是因为面对教授的提问不想让教授觉得自己闲散无事而随口回答的,由此推断,作者的决定是很随意的,纯属偶然(by accident)。
根据第一段首句“It was our last class before summer break”可知,作者真正开始做园艺是在暑假期间。
And over the summer, it grew bigger and bigger"可知,青椒苗在作者的培育下长势喜人。
27.【答案】A
C
28.【答案】C

29.【答案】B

31.【答案】D

(17)After a period of two years, all readers are required to go to the desk with a paper that has their name and present address on it, so the library can keep up-to-date records of where people are living. If you can’t find the book you want on the shelves, you can book it in advance. If it’s in another library in the city, we can usually get it for you within a week.
