Columbus College, 241 Queen Elizabeth Drive, Kowloon City
    To: All Staff
From: Jakie Mok, Secretary; Sports Development Committee
    Date: May 20, 2020
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their children to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.
    Sports 1: Basketball
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
    Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6: 00 pm. Second, it has lots of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
    Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2: 30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/ hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
    Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (2:45 pm to 3:45 pm). Only students skillful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.
    21. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.
    B. Students selecting basketball had better register early.
    C. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.
    D. Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.
    22. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. Students taking part in basketball will walk to the courts.
    B. Every student can gain admission to one of the four sports.
    C. Hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees.
    D. Students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water.
    23. We can learn from the passage that ______.
    A. each sport will take only one hour
    B. students will be charged for the four sports
    C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak
    D. teachers will accompany students on each sport
    B
One concern I keep hearing from potential gym goers is the age barrier (障碍). Many men and women thinking about a personal fitness plan sometimes worry that “I’m too old to start exercising,” or “going to the gym is something for younger people, not me”. This brings up a big question for potential gym-goers: How old is too old? Is there an age requirement at the front door that keeps everyone over the age of 39 out?
A client of mine was talking about her father who experienced a major lifestyle change late in life, and it reminds me of just how little age really matters when we want to start an active lifestyle. We’ll call her father Rob.
Rob lived an active lifestyle in his earlier years. Even in his mid-70s, Rob was still walking the golf course three to five times a week, actively playing tennis, and traveling abroad whenever he had the chance.
During his travels, Rob had an accident, falling down a set of stone stairs in Istanbul and tearing up both of his knees. He had emergency surgery and experienced months of physical therapy (疗法), but was told that as a man headed into his 80s, he would never be able to walk unassisted again. However, after months of relying on others for transportation, Rob decided to do something about his sedentary condition, old age or not.
Rob started going to the gym, worked with a personal trainer, and set a realistic goal for his future: to walk around the block without a walking stick. For someone who could walk 18 holes in an afternoon, a block might seem insignificant, but Rob knew he had to start somewhere. He began leg exercises, started a healthy diet, and kept at his scheduled workouts.
It paid off. Today, Rob is walking around the neighborhood unassisted, playing golf, and traveling up and down the coast. Rob still has a lot of progress in his future, but he is already miles ahead of where he started.
    24. What do we know about Rob from the text?
    A. He lost his legs in an accident.
    B. He often exercised in his earlier years.
    C. He had an operation months after the accident.
    D. He accepted that he couldn’t walk on his own.
    25. What did Rob do to make a full recovery?
    A. He often walked the golf course.
    B. He set a long-term goal for training.
    C. He turned to a gym coach for help.
    D. He ate more food than before.
    26. Which of the following words can best describe Rob?
    A. Reliable and sensitive. B. Enthusiastic and kind.
    C. Independent and generous. D. Tough and determined.
    27. What does the author intend to tell us?
    A. Never give up hope. B. No pains, no gains.
    C. Age is not a barrier. D. Well begun is half done.
    C
Scientists say “extreme” warm air high over the Arctic Ocean this week is melting sea ice and sending very cold air to Europe. And they say such strange weather may become more common as temperatures continue to rise worldwide.
The effects of the warming are clear on Greenland’s north coast, where scientists have recorded 61 hours of temperatures above zero degrees in 2018. That is a record for a place normally frozen at this time of year. And across the Arctic region, temperatures are now 20 degrees above the average. But far to the south, a rare snow storm struck Rome, Italy on Monday. Climate scientists even use the phrase “warm Arctic, cold continent”.
Professor Lars Kaleschke told Reuters that it is unclear how often these warming periods will take place. “The question is whether this weather will happen more often. This is just one event so it’s hard to make a causal (因果关系的) relationship,” he said.
Over time, as sea ice melts, more ocean is being exposed, which releases (释放) more heat into the atmosphere. The warmer air may, in turn, change the flow of air currents high in the atmosphere, which is called the jet stream (高速气流). Researchers say the jet stream means that colder air can move further south and warmer air further north.
Ice in the Arctic Ocean is at its lowest recorded levels for late February. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center says that about 14.1 million square kilometers of the ocean is covered with ice at that time. That is about one million less than normal, or roughly the size of Egypt.
Erik Solheim, head of the U.N. Environment Programme said the rare weather fits a wider pattern driven by a build-up of greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels from cars, factories and power plants. “What we once considered to be abnormal is becoming the new normal. Our climate is changing right in front of our eyes, and we’ve only got a short amount of time to stop this from getting significantly worse.” He told Reuters.
    28. What can we know about European continent in 2018?
    A. It has experienced extremely cold weather.
    B. It’s normally frozen and struck by snow storms.
    C. It’s not quite different from the previous years.
    D. Temperatures there are 20 degrees above the average.
    29. One thing that Lars Kaleschke is unclear about is whether ______.
    A. humans can stop the weather from getting worse
    B. the extreme weather is linked to human activities
    C. the extreme weather will become a normal pattern
    D. humans can survive the extreme weather in the future
    30. What is the normal area of the Arctic Ocean sea ice in late February?
    A. About 15.1 million square km. B. About 14.2 million square km.
    C. About 14.1 million square km. D. About 13.1 million square km.
    31. What is Erik Solheim’s attitude towards the climate changes?
    A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Optimistic. D. Concerned.
    D
Throughout history, music spread through common experiences among people of different cultures. In today’s technologically advanced society, however, people spread music online, sometimes without an artist’s permission. This can lead to many problems, and music companies are now cracking down on this practice. Sharing music online without permission is theft (盗窃).
Sharing music online prevents recording companies from making money from their efforts. They say that online file sharing has resulted in a huge drop in profits and sales over the past 10 years. People who find music for free online are not charged for CDs or every MP3 download. To truly understand the impact of music piracy (盗版) on creators, one must understand how many people are involved in the recording process. For the sale of each album, profits must be shared between all parties: musicians, sound engineers, music producers, managers, advertisers, and the company selling the product. Many people believe sharing music only affects the recording artist, but the reality is that sharing hurts business for all companies involved. Therefore, the sharing of music files is just as damaging as stealing a CD from Target.
There are many people who don’t see the harm in sharing music files online and even think they have the right to do it. One online blogger states that he originally paid for an entire CD and that he “should be able to do with the material whatever he wants”. While he may have legally paid for the music, he does not have the right to provide it to the world at no cost. Most music is copyrighted (有版权的). No one can legally hand out free copies without permission, which means people like the blogger are thieves.
Although we do not spread today’s music the same way we did historically, there’s no doubt that people around the world love to share music. However, Internet piracy could prevent musicians from wanting to continue producing albums for fear of theft. Therefore, if people want to continue listening to their favorite artists, they need to buy their music so that artists will make enough profit to continue their music careers.
    32. What does the underlined phrase “cracking down on” in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Bringing up carefully. B. Speaking highly of.
    C. Dealing seriously with. D. Destroying completely.
    33. We can learn from the text that _______.
    A. artists are taking action to protect their rights
    B. sharing music files online affects a lot of people
    C. online music sharing increases sales of music CDs
    D. a person who has bought a CD has the right to share it online
    34. How is the text organized?
    A. Topic—Argument—Explanation
    B. Opinion—Discussion— Description
    C. Main idea—Comparison— Supporting statements
    D. Introduction—Supporting statements—Conclusion
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Music Piracy is Theft B. Is Sharing Music Right?
    C. What is Music Piracy? D. Music Piracy is Good for Music Lovers
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。.
Have you ever wondered if you see the same colours as other people? Most people know what blue is when they see it. 36 They see the colour and call it “blue” because they were taught the word and associated it with what they saw. But how do you know what you see as blue isn’t someone else’s red?
The ability to perceive (感知) different colours involves the receptors (感受器) in our eyes. Light waves hit these receptors and they react depending on which colour the light is, sending signals to the brain. 37
Some people’s receptors are more developed than others. 38 The inability of the receptor to interpret the light waves correctly means that some people cannot tell different shades (色度) of a colour.
39 It is the first way in which people may see colours differently from each other. We sometimes hear people having an argument about whether something is dark blue or black. It might be because one person has stronger receptors to interpret the light waves than others.
In the past, most scientists would argue that everyone saw colours in the same way. However, research was conducted on monkeys, in which they were injected with a kind of drug affecting their receptors. This enabled them to distinguish more colours than usual and brought an interesting revelation (启示). 40 However, this kind of drug enabled monkeys to see red.
    A. It’s the colour of sea, sky and sapphires (宝石).
    B. Normally, monkeys can only see blue and green.
    C. Some people may have the same favourite colours.
    D. People with weaker receptors usually have colour blindness.
    E. Colour could be a very personal experience, unique to everyone.
    F. Those with more effective receptors can see more shades of one colour.
    G. The brain then analyses these signals to determine which colour of the light the eyes are receiving.

“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品). “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mothers’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the competition.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought hard.

    One possible version:
Suddenly he had an idea. He searched his drawers and fortunately found a piece of pretty and fragrant paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best handwriting as a Mothers’ Day present: “Dear Mom, I’m writing this letter to tell you that you are the best mother in the world…” With a sincere heart, Jim finished the letter and put it into an envelope, his lips curving in a smile.
The next morning Jim handed his present to his mom. On finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him up into her arms with her eyes wet as if she wanted to squeeze the breath out of him. “Thank you, my dear!” she said, hugging Jim more tightly. Leaning against his mom’s shoulder, Jim slowly explained why he chose to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently said, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.

M: I have already looked around here, but I can’t find the proper size for me. I have to wear them at my coworker’s housewarming party this Saturday.

W: I was planning on going with my sister, but she got a phone call from her boss and found out that she has to work. So she can’t drive me there.
M: Well, I think some of the city buses have stops near the National Park. It would take a little longer than driving, but not much. Or you can take a taxi.

W: But it’s Grace’s birthday, not her cats’! She enjoys reading. Let’s get her a book.
M: OK, let’s go to the bookshop then.
    W: I prefer shopping online. It’s easier.
M: OK. Let’s use Dad’s computer. How about this book on cats? It seems to be interesting. It is only 6 dollars.
W: That’s quite cheap, but she has that book already. Mum gave it to her for Christmas, remember?
M: OK, not this book. What then? Some sweets?
W: It’s not your birthday. Grace really dislikes eating sweet things. And she wants to lose weight.
M: I know what! She loves flowers. Let’s get her some.
W: Flowers don’t last. I prefer to give presents that last. Let’s get her a plant then.
M: I’d love to give her that! Let’s check some pages for plants.

    (Text 10)
M: Hi, Julie. Your phone is turned off and I guess you must be celebrating with your friends. Your mum and I watched TV yesterday evening and heard about the good news about your novel. Wow! This must feel as good as the day you graduated from university! No, even better than that! Anyway, I’m phoning just to say you’ve made me a very proud dad! I’m really delighted for you. You’re interested in writing all the time. I remember you joined a writing club at the age of 11 and attended many lectures there. You took part in several writing competitions but never won a thing but you never gave up, did you? You’ve worked so hard to realize your dream and you completely deserve what they’ve offered you. I can’t wait to see your new novel in the shops. When will it be coming out, do you know? Well, as I said, I am really proud of you. Speak soon. Love you.
