Prcrastinatrs (拖延症患者),take nte: If yu’ve tried building self-cntrl and yu’re still putting things ff, maybe yu need t try smething different. One new apprach: Check yur md.
Often, prcrastinatrs attempt t avid the anxiety r wrry arused by a tugh task with activities aimed at repairing their md, such as checking Facebk r taking a nap. But the pattern, which researchers call “giving in t feel gd,” makes prcrastinatrs feel wrse later, when they face the cnsequences f missing a deadline r making a last-minute effrt, says Timthy Pychyl, an assciate prfessr f psychlgy at Carletn University.
Increasingly, psychlgists and time-management cnsultants are fcusing n a new strategy: helping prcrastinatrs see hw attempts at md repair are destrying their effrts and learn t cntrl their emtins in mre prductive ways.
The new apprach is based n several studies in the past tw years shwing that negative emtins can damage attempts at self-cntrl. It fills a gap amng established time-management methds, which stress behaviral changes such as adpting a new rganizing system r ding exercises t build willpwer.
Researchers have cme up with a playbk f strategies t help prcrastinatrs turn md repair t their advantage. Sme are tried-and-true classics: Dr. Pychyl advises prcrastinatrs t just get started, and make the drstep fr getting started quite lw. “Prcrastinatrs are mre likely t put the technique t use when they understand hw md repair wrks,” says Dr. Pychyl, authr f a 2013 bk,“Slving the Prcrastinatin Puzzle.” He adds,“A real mtive pwer cmes frm ding what we intend t d—the things that are imprtant t us.”
He als advises prcrastinatrs t practice “time travel”—prjecting themselves int the future t imagine the gd feelings they will have after finishing a task, r the bad nes they will have if they dn’t. This cures prcrastinatrs’ tendency t get s stuck in present anxieties and wrries that they fail t think abut the future.
Anther md-repair strategy, self-frgiveness, is aimed at dismissing the self-blame. University freshmen wh frgave themselves fr prcrastinating n studying fr the first exam in a curse prcrastinated less n the next exam, accrding t a recent study led by Michael Whl, an assciate prfessr f psychlgy at Carletn.
Thmas Flint learned abut the technique by reading research n self-cntrl, including studies by Dr. Siris and Dr. Pychyl. He put it t use after his family mved recently t a new huse. Instead f beating himself up fr failing t unpack all the bxes gathered in his garage right away, Mr. Flint decided t frgive himself and start with a single step. I’d say, "OK, I’m ging t take an hur, with a gal f getting the TV set up, and that's it, he says; then he watched a TV shw as a reward. Allwing himself t d the task in stages, he says, is “a victry.”
47. What des Timthy Pychyl mean by mentining the “giving in t feel gd” practice in Paragraph 2?
A. It prbably des mre harm than gd.
B. It prevents prcrastinatrs frm giving up.
C. It helps prcrastinatrs meet the deadline.
D. It effectively drives away anxiety and wrry.
48. Where des a real mtive pwer cme frm accrding t Dr. Pychyl?
A. Sticking t ne’s intentin.
B. Ding things that really matter.
C. Getting started frm a lw drstep.
D. Learning imprtant techniques f md repair.
49. What is the purpse f the practice “time travel”?
A. T make their future plan mre practical.
B. T accelerate the speed f finishing the task.
C. T stp peple frm wrrying abut their travel.
D. T free peple frm the present negative emtins.
50. What can be inferred frm Michael Whl study?
A. Self-blame prevents students frm putting things ff.
B. Prcrastinatrs are still able t get gd scres in exams.
C. University freshmen can get rid f prcrastinatin easily.
D. Self-frgiveness is an effective way t cure prcrastinatin.
