If you are looking for recommendations on biographies(传记) that will educate you, comedies that will make your belly ache or stories that present the unique challenges women face every day, read on.

“Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen

A classic that never gets old. Set in rural England in the early 19th century, this tale centers around the Bennet family, a family of five daughters and their two parents who are desperate to find at least one of the daughters a wealthy match. Austen’s story focuses on the tension between marrying for love instead of just for power and fame, and also the unique pressure on women to find financial security by way of marriage at the time.

“Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World” by Rachel Ignotofsky

It is a sweetly illustrated and educational book that highlights the contributions of 50 women in the fields of technology, science, engineering and mathematics, from present day all the way back to 360 AD.

“Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls”  by Elena Favilli

It tells the stories of female heroes from years ago and present day. With color portraits and biographies that are short and sweet, this book is a page-turner for anyone wanting to learn about influential women in the past and present.

    “Becoming” by Michelle Obama

We wouldn’t be able to write this list without including Michelle Obama’s memoir. “Becoming” has the former FLOTUS discussing her childhood, family, motherhood, her own FLOTUS impact, the pressures of being part of the first Black family in the White House and balancing her public life now. And of course she writes all about meeting her husband and the many unique challenges they faced too.

    1. What did the Bennets intend to do?

    A. To marry their daughters to rich men.

    B. To lessen pressure on their daughters.

    C. To help their daughters marry for true love.

    D. To make their daughters financially independent.

    2. Whose book will attract a teen interested in science?

    A. Jane Austen’s.   B. Rachel Ignotofsky’s.

    C. Elena Favilli’s.   D. Michelle Obama’s.

    3. What do the four books have in common?

    A. They are all classics.  B. They are all biographies.

    C. They are all related to the female. D. They are all about heroes.

A saw-whet owl(猫头鹰) is recovering at a wildlife refuge in New York state after it was discovered glued to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The bird was found by workers helping to transport the tree 170 miles from Oneonta to New York City.

“It’s just a story out of a movie,” said Ravensbeard Wildlife Center director Ellen Kalish, who is caring for the owl.

After the owl - now named Rockefeller - was dropped off with Ms Kalish and taken to the wildlife centre, her team began giving him fluids and “all the mice he will eat”. Rockefeller had not had anything to eat or drink during his three-day road trip. “It’s amazing he didn’t get hurt,” Ms Kalish said.

Rockefeller was taken to the vet on Wednesday night for a check-up and some X-rays, but Ms Kalish said he appears to be in great condition considering his adventurous week.

Diminutive as Rockefeller is, he is a full-grown adult. Saw-whet owls are the smallest owls in the US north-east, Ms Kalish said, typically growing to no more than 8.3in(17-21cm) tall.

“They’re a very interesting species,” Ms Kalish said. They are “very” nocturnal, meaning they’re typically not seen unless someone is looking for them. Some migrate south for the winter, and some don't migrate at all.

Once Rockefeller has a clean bill of health, Ms Kalish and the Ravensbeard team will release him back into the wild. Our goal is to release any bird that can be released, she said.

There are about two million saw-whet owls across the US, so Rockefeller will be OK if he doesn’t make it all the way back to Oneonta. They find a new mate each year and go on with their lives, she said.

With all the bad news of 2020, this little owl’s rescuewas a story that needed to be shared, Ms Kalish said.

    4. Where was the owl stuck?

    A. On a tree.   B. On a truck.  C. In New York City.   D. At the wildlife centre.

    5. What was the owl first offered after arriving at the wildlife centre?

    A. A medical examination.          B. Food and drink.

    C. Christmas gifts.D. A three-day road trip.

    6. What does the underlined word “diminutive” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A. Weak.      B. Mature.      C. Interesting.     D. Tiny.

    7. What will be done to the owl if it is confirmed in good condition?

    A. Be sent to a zoo.               B. Be kept at the center.

    C. Be sent back to nature.           D. Be sent back to Oneonta.

    C

It’s become an accepted part of keeping up to date with extended family and friends, but if schoolchildren were in their parents’ shoes, the majority wouldn’t share posts of their sons and daughters online.Over 55% said they would not upload news about, or images of, their children to their social media feeds, according to survey of over 16,000 pupils by VotesforSchools.

While some were concerned about being embarrassed or the longevity of content which could remain online indefinitely, others expressed concern about their personal data being compromised. One of the pupils surveyed said, “Although our parents mean well, sometimes the consequence of a post can be disastrous.”

In response to the survey, children’s mental health charity Place2Be and law firm Mishcon de Reya have produced three films ahead of the Christmas holidays – the best period for parental oversharing.

In one video, about safety online, 10-year-old Adavan said, “If you share anything with your family, you know who’s going to see it. But if you share it publicly, there are millions of people who can see your picture.”

Joe Hancock, asecurity lead at Mishcon de Reya, encouraged parents to share wisely. “Simple steps, such as checking your privacy settings and asking others not to share content of your children on their accounts if they have not updated their privacy settings, are a good start. And, as we found out from the children during filming, having their permission is key,” he said.

The study marks a shift away from the usual debate about teaching children to use the Internet safely. Sandra Davis, head of the law firm’s family department, said, “Children are the experts on the real and immediate impact of sharenting (晒娃)– the full extent of which we cannot know yet. We must ensure we listen to children and take their views into consideration now in order to avoid any unintendedconsequences further down the line.”

8.What’s most pupils’ attitude towards sharing posts about children?

    A. Skeptical.B. Unconcerned.C. Tolerant.   D. Unwilling.

9.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?

    A. Summarize the previous paragraph.

    B. Provide some advice for parents.

    C. Predict the consequence of sharing posts.

    D. Give reasons for the result of the survey.

10.What should parents first pay attention to according to Joe Hancock?

    A. Safety.    B. Consequence.      C. Wisdom.       D. Health.

11.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Parents should take childrens opinions into account.

    B. Parents should teach children to use the Internet safely.

    C. Children must make sure to listen to their parents.

    D. Children should avoid unintended consequences of sharenting.

The prevalence of melanoma (黑素瘤) has been rapidly rising around the world for nearly a century. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise is concerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer.

Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.

What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in the winter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”

But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne,Australia.

Finally, you should monitor your moles(). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99 % of chance to survive for five years . If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrical—sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.

    12. What’s the main cause of the rise of melanoma ?

    A. The climate change.   B. Better detection.

    C. More exposure to the sun.   D. The increase of skin cancer.

13.What’s a mistake according to experts?

    A. Applying sunscreen in summer.

       B. Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.

    C. Using sunscreen during lower risk months.

    D. Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.

    14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Prevention is better than cure. B. Health is better than wealth.

    C. A disease known is half cured. D. When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.

    15. What is the best title of the text?

    A. Detect Melanoma. B. Beware Winter Rays.

    C. Monitor Your Moles.D. Spend Less Time Outdoors.

Some may think that having feelings of uncertainty as an entrepreneur(企业家) is a given. Speaking from experience, I can say for certain that there will always be ups and downs with any job. Without a solid team or a strong support system, it’s understandable that this can lead to a pretty overwhelming state of mind. 16   . Here are some tips for kicking those feelings of doubt.

    1. Speak to someone

Find someone you can share your fears, insecurities, and emotions with. Having someone to bounce your thoughts and ideas off is vital to help reduce the stress.

    2.  17

Having a strong team is a key to creating a healthy environment. If you’re feeling uncertain about the future of your company, look to your team to see how they’re impacting it. Can there be any improvements to help ease some of the pressures and allow you to focus on more important ones?

    3. Let go

Not having control of a situation can be stressful.  18.Learn to trust your fellows. Embrace the unknown, and consider it a win when you experience it.

    4. Focus on what matters

Take things one step at a time.  19  . Ask yourself how that can be achieved. With pen to paper, write it down. By writing out what is stressing you out, you’re putting a name to the issue, which can help you to address the problem.

    5. Know that you got this

It may feel like your world is crashing down on you.   20  . By looking at the bigger picture, you can put into consideration what is most important for you to achieve.

    E. However, just remind yourself that this is just another barrier on your journey to success

    F. However, ridding the need to always be in the driver’s seat is a key to developing your business

G.Creating healthier habits for handling these feelings can be one of the most beneficial things you can do

IN DENMARK you’re never more than 30 miles from the sea. Aside from Jutland’s boundary with Germany, Denmark is  36  entiresurrounded by water, with a total of 5,437 miles of coastline, “This made it perfect for the Viking society,37  sailing was the most important way to get around,” says Rikke Johansen, director at the Viking Ship Museum, in Roskilde. “Land divided people; water connected    38    they.” Fishing was a necessity for   39   (survive) long before Denmark, which is made up of 406 islands,   40    (become) an agricultural nation, but today, Johansen says, water means leisure for most Danes, “We take it 41   granted; it’s a way of life. For many of us,  42 (look) out at water every day is key.” The whole of Denmark is lowland, formed by Ice Age glaciers and glacial streams. With    43  highest point just 558 feet above sea level, the country is easily influenced by floods and storms. Sea levels are expected to rise three feet by 2100, and   44     (scientist) are worried that historical sites on the coast will disappear altogether. In 2019 the 120-year-old Rubjerg Knude light- house, originally 45    (build) 656 feet from the sea, had to be wheeled back, as coastal erosion(侵蚀) had reduced that distance to just 19 feet.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was ten years old, I was a grade four primary school student in a small town. I had a happy time at school because I had a few good friends there. We usually spent our spare time together, doing our homework, going to the amusement park, playing with our pets, and sharing our happiness and sorrows together. But everything changed when my parents decided to change their jobs and moved to a bigger city. I even had no time to say good-bye to my old friends and teachers.

As I moved to the new city, I began my school life in a totally new school with new surroundings, new teachers and new classmates.During the first week, I felt lonely when I was at school. My classmates knew each other, but they didn’t know me, which added to my loneliness and sadness. That week day after day, I was sitting on my seat, pretending to be reading. How I secretly wished that someone would come to me and introduce himself to me or even play a trick on me, but disappointingly, nobody came.

Then one day, when my parents sent me to the bus station and said good bye to me, I didn’t get on the bus to school as usual. Instead, I walked and walked on the street, looking at the beautiful window displays and forgetting everything, with no worry about the new school, new teachers and new classmates. Then my empty stomach stopped me and I used my pocket money to have a bowl of noodles in a small restaurant. It was noon at the time, but still I didn’t want to go to school or go home. So I went to a park and sat on the bench, staring at the sky. And then I had a nap. When I woke up, I decided to go back to my hometown, where my former teachers and friends lived. So I went to the railway station. There I was stopped by a policeman, who asked for my ID card, which I didn’t have at the time. Then the policeman called someone and I was asked to stay with him.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

An hour later, I found my parents running towards me.

    第一节 (满分 15 )

Last Saturday, the Students’ Union of our school organized an English Recitation Competition at the lecture hall to encourage us students to appreciate traditional English culture.

Representatives of each class actively participated in the competition. They were required  to prepare an English classic to recite within 5 minutes. Many classical works were recited, among which poems were the most popular choice. Both pronunciation and performance were evaluated. The top 10 competitors were awarded at the end of the competition.

The competition offered a wonderful opportunity for students to have a better  understanding of English classics, evoking our love for English culture.

    第二节(满分25分)

An hour later, I found my parents running towards me. They looked worried and exhausted. “Where have you been all day?” demanded my father angrily, “You are playing truant now, aren’t you!” His eyes were fuming with rage. I felt aggrieved, tears in my eyes. I muttered, “ There’s nobody I can talk to in this city.” My mother hugged me, kissing my cheeks, and said“ I am sorry, my dear. It’s our fault not to have noticed this and given you our timely help. But next time you meet any problems, turn to us first.” Hearing this, though a little bit upset, I felt better with my parents’ comfort.

The next day, when I was sent to school by my parents, I was afraid that I would be punished. Instead when the class began, the teacher told the whole class that I was permitted a day off to hang around the city the day before and asked me to share what I’d seen. Surprised, I was glad to talk about those window displays and beautiful scenes in the park. When I finished, the applause shook the classroom. Later, I made friends with quite a few classmates, which made me really happy. I learned from my teacher later that it was my dad who asked her to do that. The white lie started a new life for me.
