When LeeAnn Kriegh mved t Bend, Oregn, in 2012, she fell in lve with the trees, birds and flwers. Then she began t read nature guidebks but wasn’t satisfied with what she fund in lcal bkstres.
“There wasn’t a bk that met my needs,” Kriegh said. “I had all the field guides. And they were wnderful, but they didn’t tell me stries r teach me the basics and that’s what I needed.” Kriegh’s bk, The Nature f Bend, which was published in2016, makes her ne f abut 40 Central Oregn authrs. At first, Kriegh began by sending a plan t a bk publisher. Half a year passed befre the publisher said n t Kriegh. Central Oregn seemed t small a market, she remembered what they said. During that time she made a decisin that she wuld take care f all the bk’s elements (元素) n her wn rather than depend n anther publisher.
Being a self-publisher, she nt nly picked up the check fr printing, but she als paid fr the ther parts like marketing that are paid by a publisher. Kriegh wrked with mre than 40 phtgraphers and lcal naturalists, and read thrugh many scientific papers fr the bk.

A vaccine (疫苗) that prtects against ne f the main cmmn cld viruses has been shwn t be safe and effective in a clinical trial and culd be available by 2024.
Respiratry syncytial virus (RSV) spreads s easily that mre than 90 per cent f peple have experienced their first infectin (感染) by the age f 2. It usually causes cld-like symptms but can lead t severe illness in yung children and lder peple. All arund the wrld, abut 60,000 children under the age f 5 and 14,000 peple ver the age f 65 die each year after develping the virus.
Develping vaccines against RSV and ther respiratry viruses has been difficult because the respiratry tract (呼吸道) is a surface expsed directly t the utside wrld, says Kirsten Spann at the Queensland University f Technlgy in Australia.
“It’s harder fr antiviral antibdies (抗病毒抗体) in the bld t reach viruses in the respiratry tract, r even knw they are there, because there is sme physical separatin,” she says.
In recent years, hwever, there has been rapid prgress in finding new ways t imprve immunity against respiratry viruses.
Several RSV vaccines are being tested in clinical trials, including ne made by German cmpany Bavarian Nrdic. Its vaccine is designed t build immunity against RSV by expsing the bdy t five small fragments f the virus.
In a clinical trial invlving 420 adults aged 55 and lder, a single injectin (注射) f the vaccine in the upper arm increased the levels f RSV-fighting antibdies inside the nse by three times and caused n serius side effects.
This immune respnse lasted fr six mnths—enugh t cver a winter cld seasn—and was restred with a bster sht at 12 mnths.
The results are prmising, but mre research is needed t see if the immune respnse is strng enugh t prevent RSV infectins, says Spann.
Bavarian Nrdic is nw planning a bigger clinical trial f its RSV vaccine that is scheduled t begin in 2021 and will invlve mre than 12,000 adults. If the results are psitive, the cmpany hpes t make the vaccine available by 2024. The firm plans t ffer the vaccine t children t, but nt until it has passed clinical trials invlving peple in this age range.
