    This teaching perid mainly deals with the grammar:the subjunctive md.In the English language verbs are ften divided int three different mds—the indicative md,the imperative md and the subjunctive md.The indicative md is used t indicate a fact r put frward a viewpint.The imperative md is used t express direct cmmands r requests.It tells yu t d smething.It is als used t signal a prhibitin,permissin r any ther kind f exhrtatin.The subjunctive md is used t express a cnditin which is dubtful r nt factual.It is mst ften fund in a clause beginning with the wrd “if”.It is als fund in nun clauses,fllwing a verb that expresses a dubt,a wish,regret,request,demand,r prpsal.The fllwing are verbs typically fllwed by clauses with the subjunctive md:ask,demand,determine,insist,mve,rder,prefer,recmmend,regret,request,require,suggest,wish.
    In this perid we will fcus n nly part f the usages f the subjunctive md,that is,the subjunctive md beginning with the wrd “if” and that fllwing the verb “wish”.

    Step 2 Warming up
    Ask the students t g back t Page 1 and study the fllwing three sentences in Warming Up and translate them int Chinese paying special attentin t their verb frms:
    (1)If yu were an artist,what kind f pictures wuld yu paint?
    (2)If yu culd_have three f these paintings n the walls f yur classrm,which wuld yu chse?
    (3)Have yu ever wished yu culd_paint as well as a prfessinal artist?
    Tell the students that the abve three sentences are with the subjunctive md and then discuss it with them.Then ask the students t think abut the questin “What is the subjunctive md?”
    Step 3 Grammar learning
    Ask the students t study the fllwing sentences and try t summarize the structure and meaning f the subjunctive md.
    1.The subjunctive md beginning with the wrd “if”:
    (1)If it ften rained,the crps wuld_grw well.如果经常下雨的话,庄稼会长得很好。
    (The fact is that it desn't ften rain and the crps dn't grw well.)
    (2)If he were here,everything wuld_be all right.如果他在这儿的话,一切都没有问题。
    (The fact is that he is nt here and everything is nt all right.)
    (3)I wuld certainly g if I were yu.我要是你就一定去。

    (1)I wish I were nt s busy.但愿我不那样忙碌。

    (3)I wish I culd_be f sme use t yu.我希望我对你能有点用处。
    (The fact may be that I am nt f any use t yu.)

    Try t help the students draw the fllwing cnclusins.
    1.The subjunctive md is usually used t talk abut situatins that are nt true r nt likely t be true.The situatin referred t in the subjunctive md is nt real,but it is hypthetical.
    2.The subjunctive md is ften fund in a clause beginning with the wrd “if”.The past tense(were,did,culd d)is ften used in the “if” clause and “wuld+v.” is ften used in the main clause expressing the situatin cntrary t the present.
    3.When the verb “wish” is fllwed by an bject clause,its predicate must be with the subjunctive md.The past tense(were,did) is ften used t express the situatin cntrary t the present and “culd/wuld+v.” is ften used t express the situatin cntrary t the future.

    Ask students t d the fllwing exercises:

    First ask students t d the exercises individually,and then let them discuss and check their answers with their partners,and finally give them the crrect answers and deal with any prblems they might meet.

    2.In sentences with the subjunctive md,smetimes a prepsitinal phrase beginning with “withut(=if nt)” is used t take the place f the “if” clause t express implied cnditin.

    2.Let students play the game “If I were a...,I wuld...”.
    Ask the students t take turns t imagine what they wuld d if they were smebdy r did anything with their partners.Make their wn sentences as interesting and imaginative as they can.Write dwn the six best nes and share them with the class.
