【2014山东卷】The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success: 20 tablet computers(平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a US group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading”, where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.

【2019晋冀鲁豫中原名校高三第三次联考】 Experts say there are about 6,500 languages spoken throughout the world. But the United Nations guesses that about half of these languages are in danger of disappearing.
One organization seeking to save world languages is Wikitongues. It has a simple goal: to provide the tools and support that people need to save their languages. When a language disappears, many other things can go away as well. For example, parts of a community’s culture, knowledge and identity can also be lost.
Because of this, Udell, co-founder of Wikitongues, believes the process of bringing languages back must be done by community members themselves. He said, “There is no way an outside organization can save someone’s language for them.”
Wikitongues was started in 2016 as an open Internet collection of world languages. The self-described “community” is operated by volunteers from around the world. The collection is in the form of language videos that people speaking the languages add to the Wikitongues website.
Udell says saving languages does count. There are many examples of languages that disappeared but later returned to use. “Hebrew went extinct(灭绝的) in the 4th century BC, and was revived(重新使用) in the 1800s. Now once again, it’s the mother tongue of half of the world’s Jewish population.” Another example is a Native American tribe. The tribe’s language went extinct in the 1940s. But the tribe was able to successfully build up a “language recovery” in recent years.
One of Wikitongues’ volunteers is Theron Kolokwe, who lives in Namibia. His native language is Subiya, which is spoken by about 30,000 people.
“I want the world to know about my language,” Kolokwe said. But his goal goes beyond just sharing his language with others through video. He is also working to create a dictionary and language teaching materials that can be used in schools.

Only half (51%) are able to speak a second language to any standard and as more people travel abroad, this is becoming an increasing regret, according to a new study.
Almost two-thirds (62%) of UK adults wish they were better at speaking languages. So they can better understand a city's culture (38% of respondents), talk with locals (24%) and go beyond the guide book (21%).

If languages weren't an issue then one in eight (12%) Brits would visit Japan. China, Italy and Russia were also popular choices. Despite the communication problem, Japan has seen a 7.5 % increase in the number of British visitors between January and April, compared to this time last year.
“The number of British travelers to Japan has been growing year on year,” according to Hollie Mantle, marketing and communication manager for the Japanese Tourist Board. “People are realizing that Japan is one of the most hospitable and beautiful countries on earth, with so many new experiences for travelers to try, not to mention worldclass cuisine!”
They had this message for Brits thinking about visiting: “Though some travelers worry about language barriers, as soon as you arrive in Japan, you’ll realize that people will go out of their way to help you enjoy their country. There really are few ‘barriers’ — road signs and train stations are in English, you’ll find that people speak more English than they let on, and even when they don’t, they will go above and beyond to help you out.”
