Anyone can book a trip, but not everyone can plan the best adventure that's affordable and fun. Here are tips that we'd like to share with you about hotels.
Check Distances on a Map
It's not uncommon for hotels to slightly exaggerate (夸大) their closeness to attractions around town. If being close to a particular airport is important for your trip, confirm distances on Google Maps before you book a hotel.
Be polite to the Staff
A little niceness goes a long way, especially with hotel staff that has to deal with difficult guests on a regular basis. When you check in, simply say hello to the cleaning staff when you pass them in the hall. This is not only common politeness, but it also increases your chances of getting perks (额外待遇) during your stay.
Skip the Package Deals
To appeal to new guests, some hotels will offer themed package deals (主题套餐) that sound exciting but may not be worth it. Sometimes these packages include things you don’ t want or need and the special rate could be higher than the regular rate.
Ask about Parking
Especially when you stay in large cities, parking costs really add up. Look for hotels offering parking rates. If parking is expensive, apps like Best Parking can help you find nearby parking lots at cheaper rates if you don t mind walking a bit.
We hope that you can find the tips on this page. Please visit us again to keep getting the best deals and travel tips.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor (因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources (资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, Mclntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
Since the 1930s, Mclntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B. The increasing variety of California big trees.
C. The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D. The influence of farming on big trees in California.
25. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?
A. Ecological studies of forests. B. Banning woodcutting.
C. Limiting housing development. D. Fire control measures.
26. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to Mclntyre?
A. Inadequate snowmelt. B. A longer dry season.
C. A warmer climate. D. Dampness of the air.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. California's Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?
B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?
D. Patrick Mclntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California
C
I believe that, as a doctor, I should always get a blanket for my patients who need one. Yes I know there are other people who can do this. I can ask a nurse or an orderly to do it, but I believe that I should do it. So several times a day, while working in our emergency department, I leave my patients' bedside, get them a nice warm blanket and cover them up, before continuing on my day.
Which brings me back to why I believe I should offer to bring my patients a blanket. To me it is the first step in communicating to the person that my priority is his or her comfort, both physical and emotional. It is a simple act that acknowledges my desire to meet their basic needs as a patient. It may be an overused expression but I want to treat my patients the way I would want my family members taken care of. This behavior was also modeled for me when I was a patient.
Shortly after college I was involved in a serious accident while working in an ambulance as a volunteer. The short story is that I broke my femur (股骨), the large bone in my thigh, and my recovery required a total of four surgeries over a year or so. The surgeon, Dr. David, who performed the last three operations, usually did his rounds late at night.
He was a brilliant and talented surgeon who reminded me in appearance of a chain-smoking Einstein. He would ask about my pain and my mental state, but what I remember most is his offering to bring me French fries the next time he visited. I felt that he cared about me and, more importantly, understood what I was going through. He connected with me, and I trusted and obeyed everything he told me to do.
Getting a blanket and placing it on my patient is, in the end, a check and balance for me. I have the power to order hundreds of tests and treatments. I strive to always be right ( or at least never wrong). And on not so rare occasions, I help save a life. But in the end, if I have not made that connection with my patient, if I have not shown them I understand their needs, then I have failed them as a physician and as a person.
28. According to the author, what does the performance of giving blankets to patients mean?
A. It may be an overused expression although he doesn't care about it.
B. It gives him the power to order tests and treatments.
C. It is helpful to save a life when you are in trouble.
D. It helps communicate his care towards his patients.
29. The author mentioned his own experience as a patient, which of the following is NOT his intention?
A. Showing his gratitude for the surgeon.
B. Demonstrating his action of giving blankets.
C. Implying the similar function of bringing French fries and giving blankets to patients.
D. Claiming the importance of patients' trust toward doctors.
30. What does the last sentence ( paragraph 5) imply?
A. The author felt regretful for not making connection with his patients by bringing them blankets.
B. A good physician should understand patients' needs.
C. It’s important to communicate doctors' care to their patients.
D. The author failed as a person as he didn't show his understanding for his patients' needs.
31. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. emphasizing the importance of sincere care and understanding of patients
B. emphasizing how to build a bridge between doctors and patients
C. emphasizing that a small gesture can warm the patient’s heart
D. emphasizing how to improve the doctor-patient relationship.
D
The new SafeCap from Ford tracks head movements to determine if a wearer is about to nod off.
The trucking industry is a demanding field where drivers have to cover many miles to meet tight deadlines, sometimes requiring them to drive through the night---a risky practice for drivers. Research has found 11 percent of Brazilian lorry drivers, who drive more than 60, 000 miles per year on average, have been in an accident over the past two years. In celebration of 60 years of truck production in Brazil, Ford is trying to help solve the problem by developing a hat that warns drivers that they might be falling asleep.
It's called SafeCap, and it was produced in Sao Paulo by Ford and a creative agency called GTB. Together, they conducted research that figured out which head movements were standard for drivers doing their jobs and which were associated with nodding off. They developed software that can tell the difference and equipped a trucker hat with sensors ( 传感器) that warn the wearer through alarms, lights and vibrations (震动) that he may he nodding off. “SafeCap, which began as a local market project, continues to grow as we see potential around the world, " Ford’s head of sales, marketing and service in Brazil, Oswaldo Ramos Said, "After we conclude our Brazilian tests, the goal is to share with other countries.”
Ford is hoping that the reaction to Safe Cap is similar to what the automaker experienced earlier this year when it produced a crib (婴儿床) that imitated a car's movements and sounds to help children sleep. Demand for the crib made the company decide to make it available for purchase. SafeCap is still in production, and Ford is open to ideas from anyone who might be able to make it better and more effective.
32. By what means can SafeCap determine whether the driver is sleepy?
A. Observing the driver's head movements. B. Ringing an alarm immediately.
C. Tracking the driver's brain activity. D. Communicating with the driver.
33. What does the underlined words "the problem" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The long time of driving trucks. B. The busy schedule of truck drivers.
C. Truckers having to drive at night. D. Truckers running into accidents.
34. What can be learnt from the last two paragraphs?
A. Ford produced SafeCap by itself. B. Noises from the cap keep drivers awake.
C. SafeCap hasn’ t been on sale yet. D. The crib ended in failure.
35. What's Oswaldo Ramos's attitude towards the future of SafeCap?
A. Uncertain. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Practical

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the bus stopped., which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door,
gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.
Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off
to our grandparents’ house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.
My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turn-off for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn't stand it. "What?” asked my mother. " It's those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's New Year. I can't stand it.”
When my father pulled in to the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children-----two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window, “Happy New Year, " he said.
“Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.
“Are you waiting for the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn't come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.
Paragraph 1:
The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Kenton,
I am sorry to hear you have some difficulties with life and communication in our country, but I'm willing to help you out of trouble.
To tell you the truth, it is natural that you are missing your parents and want to go home. But personally, I don't think we can live with our parents all our life. Thus, it is a good chance for you to be more independent. You can call your parents more often instead of giving up your study.
If you don’t mind, I would like to be your friend. We can chat online frequently, which will improve your Chinese a lot. Only by communicating with others can you overcome your difficulties.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua
【名师点评】文章开头用并列句引出主题,简单明了。
第二、三段分别用 To tell you the truth和 If you don' t mind引出内容,言语间充满了真挚的感情。第三段用倒装句 Only by communicating with others... difficulties收尾,在结构上使文章的精彩之处得以升华。此外,文章运用了大量的亮点词语 (如be willing to, independent, instead of, overcome等)和高级句式 (如主语从句 that you are missing your parents and want to go home, 非限制性定语从句 which will improve your Chinese a lot,倒装句 Only by communicating with others can you overcome your difficulties等)。
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused. He said he didn't want to put us to any bother. My father explained that the rain would last long and our house was near the station. After my parents' strong persuasion, he finally agreed and thanked us all the time. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage,; only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder handing them some tissues to wipe the rainwater from their faces.
Paragraph 2:
When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. My mother noticed all their clothes were wet, so she found some of ours for them to change. Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. One of the girls chose Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. When the rain stopped, my father drove them to the station. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at their happy faces. That was the day when Jill and I learned the joy of making others happy.

Text 2
W: How are things going with your new job? Is it rewarding?
M: Yeah, things are going well. I am so glad I entered this field. I hope to get a raise next month.
Text 3
W: Are you coming to dinner at 7: 30 tonight?
M: I don't know.I have to work late tonight. I'll let you know this afternoon if I can make it for dinner. I’ll give you a call around 3:30.
Text 4
W: Well. I think the design is very nice, but you know what, it just doesn’t go in here.
M: What do you mean?
W: It doesn’t suit the style of the house. This would be better in a modern flat or somewhere; it just looks out of place here.
Text 5
W: How do you like the music at this dance club?
M: It’s great. I love dancing.
W: Me too. You know I would be grateful you dance with me.
M: Sure, but first you have to do me a favor. Well, I would be grateful if you could stop stepping on my foot.
Text 6
W: OK, stop right there you thief! Don’t move!
M: Don’t shoot!
W: Put your hands over your head and don’t make any sudden move.
M: Look, officer, I’m afraid you have the wrong person. I’m the bank manager, not the thief.
W: Are you sure? Oh, I’m sorry. I’m afraid I’ve made a terrible mistake.
M: Well, you still have a chance to get your man. I saw somebody carrying a bag full of money running that way.
Text 7
W: How is your stay here, sir?
M: Well, pretty good! All of the staff here are friendly and very helpful.
W: Thank you, how about the meal, sir?
M: It’s great! My wife loves the food very much.
W:Thank you. Would you like tea time this evening, sir?
M: Oh yes, as usual. And...can you arrange for a candlelight dinner for tomorrow?
W: Certainly. What time could we arrange, sir?
M: Is it possible at 8 pm?
W: Sure. How about the menu and decorations? How would you like to have it?
M: Can you provide a very romantic candlelight dinner in the garden with traditional Chinese decorations and Chinese cuisine?
W: Certainly, we will arrange it, sir.
M: Thank you
Text 8
M: Good afternoon. How can I help you?
W: Hello...Erm... yes. I’ve just missed the 16: 20 train! What time is the next one?
M: Let me see. The next train to Mancheter leaves at 17:15 from Platform 2 and arrive at 18:30.
W: Half past six... Erm...Can I use the same ticket?
M: Ah, sorry, no... You can’ t use this ticket on the 17:15 train.
W: Really? Why not?
M: This ticket is valid on trains before 5 and after 7 o’clock. During rush hour tickets are more expensive.
W: Oh...Do I have to buy another ticket?
M: Yes, well, I can change your old ticket for a new ticket. Your ticket costs £7.50 and the new ticket is £11.00. So you just pay the difference, which is £3.50.
W: Ah, OK, erm...What platform is it from?
M: Platform 2. Just over there, on the other side.
W: OK, thanks. Bye.
M: All right. Bye bye!
Text 9
W: Do you think that I’m fatter than before?
M: Hmmm, a little bit. Are you upset with that?
W: Yes, of course. I don’t like being fat you know! I must be on a diet.
M: As long as you’re healthy, I think it’s okay with your body. That’s not too big for your height.
W: Well, you’re right. But I still want to be on a diet.
M: So, what kind of food do you avoid eating?
W: That’s the problem. I love cooking with coconut milk and also fried food. As far as I know, what coconut milk contains might increase my weight.
M: Haha...yes! Cooking with coconut milk gives better flavor and a taste! But it can be harmful if you consume it too much. You had better not have too much of it. How about boiled or steamed foods?
W: Well, I don't really like them. It will be hard for me. But no pains, no gains. So I must control myself.
M: And you can do more exercise to lose your weight.
W: That’s true.

When I was a child, I lived in a house in the country. I had my own bedroom, there was plenty of room, and I could explore every square metre of land. It was really a pleasant life. Then I left my country at 16. I went to France and I had to face new problems. And I discovered life in flats inconvenient---a lot of noise, the rooms are smaller, and even if the rooms are smaller, the price is really high. Advantages there are many. If it is very cold, it's good to have neighbours at your top, bottom and on every side because of the heating. It's a really funny thing. You don't need to maintain the roof or the paint, and I think it’s a good point. Regardless of your age, and your culture, I think a flat can be more suitable, especially for the elderly because it’s more secure and they don' t need to maintain the place. On the other hand, when they have their house and a garden, it can be an opportunity to exercise by planting and watering the flowers and vegetables. Anyway, I think both lives can be suitable as long as you are happy with that.
