    第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

    A

Today we report on two cases where fish are both the victims and the offenders.

The first involves two kinds of Asian carp (鲤鱼), bighead and silver. They can grow more than a meter long and weigh up to forty-five kilos. They eat huge amounts of plankton that other fish need to survive. Silver carp can also jump high and hit boaters. Asian carp were brought to the United States in the 1970s as a solution. They were imported to eat algae (海藻). They were put to work as cleaners at fish farms along the Mississippi River and in wastewater treatment systems.

But now the fish are moving north toward the Great Lakes. They are making their way up a system built years ago to link the Mississippi to Lake Michigan. The dangers of an invasion are environmental and economic. The destructive carp could spread within the Great Lakes and threaten fishing and trade.

An electric fence has been put. The underwater barrier is meant to shock the carp into turning back. Only one Asian carp was found among many thousands of fish killed with poison while part of the fence was being serviced. The barrier may not be enough to protect the Great Lakes. There are calls in Congress for emergency action. But there are no decisions yet.

The problem in Utah is with common carp. Officials want to remove around three-fourths of the carp from Utah Lake, the largest natural body of freshwater in the state. The state wants to remove millions of carp to protect an endangered species—the June sucker fish. The carp eat plants the suckers use as hiding places.

Carp were first put into the lake in the 1880s as a food source. Now there are so many, experts say up to twenty metric tons a day could be removed with nets over a period of several years. But officials are fishing for ideas about what to do with all those fish, which could get pretty smelly.

    56. Asian carp were brought to the USA in the 1970s to .

    A. spread within the Great Lakes

    B. enrich American people’s everyday diet

    C. threaten fishing and trade in the Great Lakes

    D. eat algae and work as cleaners at fish farms

    57. How many measures have been taken to protect the Great Lakes according to the passage?

    A. None. B. Only one. C. Several. D. Quite a few.

    58. Why does the Utah state want to remove around three-fourths of the carp from Utah Lake?

    A. Because the carp are damaging the June sucker’s hiding place.

    B. Because the carp are eating the endangered species—the June sucker fish.

    C. Because the carp are not getting along well with other species in the lake.

    D. Because the carp are spreading too fast and has taken up much of the living space.

    59. What is most likely to be talked about in the paragraph that follows?

    A. Other problems caused by the carp.

    B. Ideas on dealing with the removed fish.

    C. Decisions made by the local government.

    A. In a travel magazine.

    B. In a personal diary.

    C. In an fishery report.

    D. In a biology textbook.

Alexander Scott, who lived in Pennsylvania, is regarded as a hero because she thought of others before herself. Alex’s goal was to find a cure for people with cancer. Alexander Scott was four years old when she started her own lemonade (柠檬水) stand. While she was too weak to fight it off, she was still strong inside. Alex raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.

Alex was born in 1996. When Alex was just a baby they found a tumor (肿瘤) on her back and then they removed it. Two days before Alexander Scott’s first birthday she was diagnosed with neroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. Alex has tried so hard to fight her cancer.

When Alex was four years old, she was trying to find a cure to help others. That’s when Alex had the idea to start her own lemonade stand. She opened her first lemonade stand in July of 2000. In her first year she raised $2,000. As word spread Alex started to get more and more donations from people. Alexander Scott has raised more than $900,000 for pediatric cancer.

The kind of hero Alexander is hero to others near and far. While Alex was trying to fight off cancer, she raised over $700,000. Her goal was $1,000,000 for cancer. Most of it was from people that donated money to help find a cure for cancer. Another reason is that when people saw Alex started to have a lemonade stand to help others, they started to do the same thing. Today there are about 200 lemonade stands held to raise money for cancer. After Alex met her goal she’s probably going to save a lot of children and adults’ lives.

That’s why people keep going on with her goal. Maybe we can meet her goal by donating money and helping others so you can find a cure for cancer. If you want to help Alex Scott you can click her own web site www.alexslemonade.com. There are a lot of pictures, and facts about Alex Scott. 第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

    请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

    注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Problem: On the scale of problems, “pictures of food on the Internet” is firmly first-world. And that is almost certainly a too-generous definition of “problem.” When it comes to photographing and putting your dinner on line, I say live and let live, you know? Maybe your salad was particularly inviting and pleasing that night, and I, too, have spent many an hour clicking “random” on Smitten Kitchen and salivating(流口水).

But I assume if you’re making the effort to arrange your food artfully and preserve its memory in a digital archive, you must... like food. And want it to taste good. A recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology suggests that spending time focusing on images of food makes the food itself less satisfying.

Methodology: The researchers assumed that imagining enjoying something might lead to satiation -- the feeling that makes the second piece of cake taste not-quite-as-good as the first. To test this, they had some people participate in two experiments that they were told were separate -- one in which they rated how appetizing different photos of food looked, and one in which they ate some peanuts and rated how much they enjoyed them.

A separate group of people did the same experiment again, but in the photo-rating portion, some were asked to rate how appetizing the food was or to choose a preference between two foods, and some were asked to rate the brightness of the photo itself.

Results: The more photos of food people looked at, the less they enjoyed the peanuts -- if they were looking at photos of salty food. People who looked carefully at images of sweets enjoyed the peanuts more, suggesting that imagination causes satiation only if you’re imagining a similar food. In the second experiment, participants who focused on the brightness of the photos were able to enjoy the peanuts more than those who were thinking about the deliciousness of foods while they looked at the images.

Implications: You’ll probably enjoy your food more if you don’t take a picture of it, or scroll through images of cookies at work and then eat one when you get home. This also has potential implications for advertisers, who may unknowingly be giving away satiation for free when they show images of chicken wings or whatever in front of us all day long. But luckily the study provides a hint: Try not to think about the food’s taste while you take a photo -- just focus on your composition.

    第五部分:书面表达(满分25分)

    The Modern People’s Life Burden

As we can see in the picture, a man, who is well-dressed, is trying his best to lift up a barbell on the tops of which there is a house on one top, and a car on the other. The man looks very tired, but he seems not to be willing to drop them.

In fact, there are many people suffering from this tiredness like the man in the picture above. Those who want to lead an elite-style life are eager to possess their own big houses and cars. So they have to make a loan, and pay back the money bit by bit. This is a process of suffering.

As the old saying goes, “A man can do no more than he can. ”In my opinion, we should live a life as the life is.
