October Books of Southampton in England had been struggling to afford the rising rent prices of the building that they had occupied since 1977. The owners created a crowdfunding(众筹)page for S 400 000 in hopes of buying out an old bank building down the block. Hundreds of devoted customers and regular visitors offered donations and loans to help meet the crowdfunding goal.
Then on Sunday, the shop ran into another money issue-how would they be able to move their books to the new location without having to pay for expensive moving services? October Books put out a call for volunteers to form a “human conveyor belt" between their old store and the new location 500 feet down the street.
They expected maybe a few dozen people to show up, but to their surprise, over 200 people lined up on the sidewalk to pass each of the store's 2 000 hooks to their new home. Amy Brown, one of the store's employees, said that she was astonished at so many people. "I was handing hooks to people without actually seeing the entire of it,” said Brown. "So it was only after about 20 minutes that I actually went out into the road and saw the extent of the people.” When passing pedestrians(行人)asked what people were doing, they would join in to give a hand. Nearby restaurants even brought hot teas and coffees for the volunteers.
“It was really sort of surprising and positive, and just a really moving experience to see people joining in because they wanted to help. And they wanted to be part of something bigger,” Brown said. Now this small independent bookstore in England isn't just surviving-it is growing thanks to the city that adores its literary services.
    21. Which of the following factor drove October Books to a new location?
    A. Cultural difference. B. Government policy.
    C. Financial difficulty. D. Business condition.
    22. How did people passing by react to the "human conveyor belt"?

    B. They stopped and took some pictures.
    C. They bought hot teas for the volunteers.
    D. They felt astonished and called the local TV.
    23. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Human Chains of People Help Move a Bookstore
    B. Booklovers Gather for Moving Books in England
    C. Bookstore Gets Crowdfunding for Future Survival
    D. People Feeling Positive by Helping out a Bookstore

After years of designing tall, modern skyscrapers(摩天大楼), some architects are starting to rethink space. They are exploring underground areas for new construction. No,not just parking garages. They imagine using new technology and old disused sites to develop parks below the surface. Some call these projects earthscrapers. One such architect is James Ramsey.
In 2009, Ramsey sat down with city planner Dan l3arasch to brainstorm. They discussed how to reuse a huge New York City underground space abandoned for over six decades. They imagined changing it to a community park. This statement summarizes their project, called the “Lowline”: “We are inspired to use the technology to improve the lives of city residents,by creating more of the green space we all need. The Lowline aims to build a new kind of public space-one that emphasizes the historic elements of a former bus station while introducing latest solar technology and design”
What a fantastic and creative vision! But aren't parks meant to be outside? Ramsey addressed(解决)this issue by inventing what he calls "remote skylights". They use solar technology to capture(捕捉)sunlight energy and send it through cables into the dark space. The light, which could shine all day and night, would enable plants to grow. This earthscraper would feature art and performance spaces, walkways, gardens, and activity areas for citizens.
The Lowline has gained support from community leaders, business, and residents who favor this unique approach to enhance their crowded city. With luck, the Lowline could welcome its first visitors by 2020.
    24. What's the second paragraph mainly about?
    A. The emphasis on historic elements.
    13. The technology to be applied in the park.
    C. The main purpose of the “Lowline” project.
    D. The cooperation between Ramsey and Dan Barasch.
    25. What makes the “Lowline” such a unique public project?
    A. It's planned for an urban area.
    B. It's designed to be built underground.
    C. It will allow people to gather and relax.
    D. It will have trees, plants, gardens, and art.
    26. Which of the following is inappropriate, to describe the “Lowline” project?
    A. Space-efficient. B. Eco-friendly C. Resident-friendly. D.Cost-saving.
    C

A poster is a great way to advertise any event, from a hake sale to a school play, but not all posters are equally effective. 31 Following a few simple guidelines can help you create a poster that will reach your target audience and keep people's attention.
    Step 1
Identify your audience and decide what information they need to have about the event. 32 You should also consider using a “tag line”, which is a single word or phrase that gets your audience to read the rest of the poster. Magazine advertisements are good examples to follow.
    Step 2
33 Posters are most effective when the image can be understood quickly, so a single image will be more effective than multiple images. For a bake sale, one giant cake will make a stronger statement than a lot of small pictures of breads.
    Step 3
Balance your text and image in the layout. Placing the image in the center with text above and below will give your poster a traditional feeling. 34 You can do this by enlarging your image and sliding it to the left so that half of it is off the poster and the text is on the right side.
    Step 4
Evaluate your poster to make sure it conveys the message you want to send. Then, place your poster at an eye-level position-not too high and not too low. 35
    A. Draw more on posters.
    B. Focus on the visual element.
    C. An off-center design often attracts more attention.
    D. The name, the location, and the time are essential.
    E. Using computer software greatly helps a lot in designing.
    F. If not properly designed, the poster may ruin the whole event.
    G. You will be sure to attract many viewers if they can easily see your final product.

    第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

The invention of the typewriter resulted in the beginning of a focus on typing rather than on handwriting. And due to widespread use of computers today, this change 56 (continue) over these years. Honestly, learning to become good at using improved technology is all good, but 57 (decrease)attention to handwriting is not altogether good news.
Because we have been depending less 58 handwriting, educators have begun to pay less attention to handwriting in classrooms across the country 59 before. But several recent researches 60 (lead)by psychologists support the idea that forming letters by hand has great advantages. These 61 (study)show a link between drawing letters freehand and more brain activity. Their result shows that 62 (record) ideas by hand improves many skills, 63 in turn helps children gain new information better. Adults also benefit from writing instead of typing. According to researchers, the act of writing helps adults focus on what's important, and thus help 64 (they) think better.
Therefore, for these reasons, schools ought to emphasize some focus on taking notes by hand. Handwriting should 65 (practice) past the third grade. The gains are great; the losses could never be altered.

    第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
All parents know exercise is important for children: It can lower heart risks, control weight, and help kids do better in school. Plus, outdoor activities at an early age can go a long way toward helping children form healthy habits for life. In other words, exercise is needed for healthy development. But don't expect kids to understand about those things. Some kids just aren't into exercise, but that shouldn't mean they have to be addicted to the TV. So parents could do something to help inactive son or daughter fall in love with physical activity.
If parents sit in front of the TV every night, a bag of chips in hand, kids aren't likely to respect restrictions(限制)you set on their screen time either. So check your own viewing behavior, and serve as a role model by putting physical activity into your everyday life. When you can, walk instead of driving. Regularly participate in activities that you enjoy and let your kids see-and hear about-how much you enjoy them. In this way, they may “do as the Romans do". Make sure that children's fitness is included in the family schedule in the same way that school, work, shopping, and family gatherings find their way onto the calendar. You and your children are more likely to stick to an exercise pan if you incorporate(并入)it into your life on a routine basis. And your children will begin to expect and accept that Sunday morning usually means a hike ride, and a couple of nights after dinner the family takes a light walk through the neighborhood.
Children who aren't naturally good at physical activities may be self-conscious about their lack of physical skills and even fear public failure. These kids need all the support and encouragement from parents. Negative comments don't work and will only serve to make your child feel bad. Remember, acknowledge the effort-choosing to be active or trying to improve a skill-rather than the outcome.
