Born on a farm in 1876.Mordecai Brown couldn't have imagined his life as a Major League Baseball pitcher(投手).When he helped his parents at age 5, his right hand accidentally was caught in a corn harvester, losing parts of two fingers or three fingers left, However, his disabled hand did not keep him from doing what other boys of his age were doing, like playing baseball.
While working as a coal miner in his twenties, Mordecai joined a baseball team made up of fellow coal miners. In 1898, the team's pitcher injured his arm.The manager ordered Mordecai to act as the pitcher.Mordecai shook his head and held up his right hand as a reminder. But the manager didn't care."Since you have the best arm on the team, you will have to pitch."Finally, his team won the game nine to three.
In 1903, Mordecai Brown broke into Major League Baseball when he signed with the St.Louis Cardinals.Only a year later, the management of the Cardinals decided that Mordecai's disability would keep him from ever becoming a star pitcher. They traded him to the Chicago Cubs
On a sunny October afternoon in 1908, thousands of people went to New York City's Polo Grounds to see the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs battle.Mordecai was not the pitcher at first. He watched as the chosen starter faced the batters(击球员)for the New York Giants.Soon, the batters were filling the bases.
Then, Mordecai was asked to be the pitcher. It seemed that the unfavorable condition didn't affect him.He held the ball with his three fingers firmly and let it go. Strike one! Strike two! Strike three! The batter was out.And soon, the game was over. The Cubs beat the Giants, four to two.
Mordecai went on to pitch, winning one game after another, and retired after the 1916 season. In 1949, Mordecai Peter entered the National Baseball Hall of fame in New York, earning him a well-deserved place in baseball history.

NASA's Opportunity rover(漫游者)has reached the end of its life.Initially designed to last 90 days, and to, travel only 1, 000 meters.Opportunity in fact spent almost 15 years exploring the surface of Mars.During that time, it traveled more than 45 kilometers than expected.
The last signal from Opportunity was on June 10th, 2018, when a severe global dust storm enveloped Mars.Since then, NASA has spent eight months trying to regain communication with the rover, but had no result. On Tuesday February 12th, 2019, NASA made one final attempt to wake Opportunity up, but it was unsuccessful.
Before Opportunity was sent into space, the Mars Global Surveyor spotted what looked like sedimentary rocks(沉积岩)from orbit in 2000. An Opportunity team member said, "On the earth, sedimentary rocks preserve the history of the surface of our planet, and within that history, the fossil record of life exists. It is reasonable to look for evidence of past life on Mars"
While the rover didn't find any actual fossils, Opportunity did provide evidence that the environment on Mars was once much better and warmer. This answered what was the major goal of the Opportunity rover. Opportunity identified sedimentary rocks which basically meant the presence of water. But not everything went smoothly for Opportunity to achieve the goal of exploration. At one point in 2005, all its six wheels were stuck in soft sand, and it took five weeks of hard work to get the rover out.
Opportunity was one of the most successful rovers ever and made great contributions.During its journey on Mars, Opportunity discovered"Heat Shield Rock", a basketball-sized meteorite(陨石)which is made mostly of iron and nickel. It also gave us a massive amount of photos of Mars with which people have done some amazing things. Bodrov, a photographer, took images from Opportunity to create a 360-degree view of Victoria Crater on Mars.
Although Opportunity has reached the end, the legacy(遗产)that the rover produced for us will last a long time. With the technological development, perhaps the day is not so far off when brave astronauts walk on the surface of Mars.
8.What do the statistics in paragraph.1mainly show?

B. Opportunity was overused for more than a decade

10.Why was Opportunity sent to Mar?
A. To explore the environment on Mars
B. To discover the climate conditions on Mars.
C. To survey the history of the surface of Mars.
D. To find differences between rocks on earth and on Mars.
11.What is the main purpose of paragraph 5?
A. To illustrate What contributions Opportunity made
B. To demonstrate how Opportunity worked on Mars
C. To introduce how "Heat shield Rock"was discovered

There is a trend in travel that has picked up steam over the last few years. That trend is called ecotourism. As environmental welfare and sustainability(持续性) have become more important to people over the last decade, travel companies around the world are the biggest winners. They cash in on people's willingness to spend lots of money in the name of environmental protection by operating eco-tours.
But how many companies really live up to that? The Marriott or other resorts might talk about their commitments to reducing waste by using recycled toilet paper and low flow shower heads, but they have huge hotels. The nature of their hotels means they will never be truly environmentally-friendly, unless they rebuild the place. And most of their customers wouldn't put up with higher prices to help balance the capital costs of upgrading to be eco-friendly. And if you look at the most environmentally-friendly hotels and tours, they are also the most expensive.
Companies stress how they are going green to save the environment, but they only make increasing changes designed to make us feel good. Few companies make the capital investment to truly change their business model, especially those in the tourism industry. It's easier to change toilet paper than to change how you design your future hotels.
Eco-tours market themselves as a low effect, environmental, and community friendly way to see the world. Tourists come, learn a bit about the local culture, and then leave, satisfied with the knowledge that they "helped"the environment. But the reality is that big companies bring you in, make you feel good about yourself, and take all the profit back home.
I see promise and hope in sustainable, tourism. Ecotourism to me is about not damaging the environment and providing a little education, and sustainable tourism is about living and growing with the environment and the local cultures, I believe the ecotourism trend is here to stay and that is for sure a good thing. However, if we want it to have a greater effect, there needs to be a focus not only on "using less toilet paper"but also on sustainable, local measures actions that help businesses grow and protect the environment.

14.What is the author's attitude towards the present situation of ecotourism?
A. Critical B. Unconcerned C. Curious. D. Favorable
15.What is the author's opinion on ecotourism?
A. It should focus on advertising the local cultures
B. It should bring economic benefits to the local people.
C. It should seek temporary support from the local government.

We all hear companies should follow work policies. Here is a new policy that makes international workforces much happier. That is a shorter workweek.
Working from 9 am to 5 pm sounds like a dream to anyone who has logged a 70-hour week, but in 2018, Perpetual Guardian, a New Zealand financial services company, switched to a 30-hour, four-day workweek for a trial period. 16 However, their salaries and benefits didn't change.
At the end of the two-month trial, employee engagement increased.Work-life balance also increased from 54 percent to 78 percent. 17 The trial was such a success that the company permanently set a four-day workweek in November 2018.
A survey was conducted in September 2018 of employees from America. 18
Globally,72 percent of full-time employees would work four days or less a week if their salary remained the same.On a similar note, 45 percent of those surveyed said they believed they could finish their work in five hours if they had no interruptions.
19 In Denmark, Danish workers take their work time very quite seriously. They don't start their work till 9 am and they clock out at 5pm, There is no office tiredness and they become more efficient because they leave the office before they have a chance to get tired out. American workers tend to get to work early and leave much/later, leaving little time for relax. They aren't necessarily working harder during all those hours;they're just working longer. 20
