For some years,my mother worked for a charity as President and Secretary.Selling raffle tickets(兑奖券) was her main means of bringing in the charity’s muchneeded funds. We girls would accompany her, selling tickets with great success. My father made and donated beautiful wooden toys, jewellery boxes and other lovely items as prizes.
Now my sister was always coming up with “good ideas”,most of which didn’t work out to plan. But that didn’t deter her.She had many just waiting to be tested. When she was eight and I was just five,we had a wonderful idea for a business adventure. We decided we would sell raffle tickets for charity, and that charity was us!
So one afternoon,we told our mother we were going to play in the park with our cousins as we did most days after school. But instead,we walked around the streets armed with a raffle book,a pen and a large cloth bag to carry the money.
We’d accompanied our mother many times when she sold tickets,so people were familiar with us when we appeared at their doors.Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous.Although there were no actual prizes, our mother’s previous track record enabled us to sell nearly the whole book of raffle tickets.
Like a little pair of lottery(彩票) winners,we walked home and proudly showed off our takings. But our enjoyment of this sudden wealth was shortlived, and our plans for spending it quickly failed. Our angry mother took us back to every ticket buyer, making us apologise and give the money back.Thankfully, our sweet neighbours didn’t make a big deal of our “clever” misbehavior and thus my mother’s
fundraising career could continue safely. We were taught a good lesson by our mother that day. Also I remember my sister’s entrepreneurial(企业家的) spirit dried up a bit after that.
    4. What did the author’s father do?
    A. He got prizes ready. B. He sold handmade items.
    C. He was in charge of a charity. D. He helped design raffle tickets.
    5. What does the underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Embarrass. B. Shock.
    C. Discourage. D. Mislead.
    6. What can be learned about the author and her sister while selling raffle tickets?
    A. They ran into their mother.
    B. They met some generous strangers.
    C. They got lost while walking around the streets.
    D. They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.
    7. What lesson did the author and her sister learn?
    A. Honesty is the best policy. B. What’s done can’t be undone.
    C. Misfortune never comes alone. D. Good advice is beyond all price.
A 5. C 6. D 7. A
My father made and donated beautiful wooden toys, jewellery boxes and other lovely items as prizes.(我父亲制作并捐赠了漂亮的木制玩具、首饰盒和其他可爱的物品作为奖品。) 故选A项。
Now my sister was always coming up with “good ideas”,most of which didn’t work out to plan.(现在我妹妹总是能想出“好主意”,但大多数都没有按计划实现。) She had many just waiting to be tested.(她有很多只是等待测试。) 因此划线单词deter可以理解为discourage(使气馁),故选C项。
We’d accompanied our mother many times when she sold tickets,so people were familiar with us when we appeared at their doors.Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous.Although there were no actual prizes, our mother’s previous track record enabled us to sell nearly the whole book of raffle tickets.(妈妈卖票的时候,我们陪了她很多次,所以当我们出现在门口时,大家都很熟悉我们。 D They took advantage of people’s trust in their mother.(他们利用人们对他们母亲的信任。)
Thankfully, our sweet neighbours didn’t make a big deal of our “clever” misbehavior and thus my mother’s fundraising career could continue safely. We were taught a good lesson by our mother that day.( 值得庆幸的是,我们可爱的邻居并没有把我们的“聪明”行为当回事,因此我母亲的筹款事业可以安全地继续下去。 他们小聪明就是上文提及的“Despite the blank looks they received when asking about the prizes on offer, they were very generous.Although there were no actual prizes…(尽管在询问奖品时他们得到的只是茫然的表情,但他们非常慷慨。虽然没有真正的奖品……)。因此可知,作者和妹妹得到的教训是要有诚信。故选A项。

Insects could disappear within a century at current rate of decline, says Global Review.
The world’ s insects are moving quickly down the path to dying out, indicating a disastrous collapse(崩溃)of nature’ s ecosystems is likely to happen, according to the first global scientific review. More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found. The rate of extinction(灭绝)is eight times faster than that of mammals, birds and reptiles.
“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web—they pollinate(授粉) the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or hate them, we humans cannot survive without insects,” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.
The analysis, published in the journal Biological Conservation, says intensive agriculture is the main driver of the declines, particularly the heavy use of pesticides(杀虫剂). Urbanisation and climate change are also significant factors.
One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects. A small number of adaptable species are increasing in number, but not nearly enough to outweigh the big losses.
Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said, “It is alarming to see this collation(整理) of evidence that shows the state of the world’ s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’ s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse(反转)these terrible trends.”
    8. What did Prof Dave stress in his speech?
    A. Insects are vital to food webs.
    B. Not all people love insects.
    C. Scientists are concerned about insect loss.
    D. Humans need certain conditions for survival.
    9. Which of the following is most influenced by insect loss?
    A. Animals that feed on insects. B. Adaptable animal species.
    C. Pests that are used to pesticides. D. Crops produced by intensive agriculture.
    10. How did Matt Shardlow sound when talking about the state of insect loss?
    A. Relaxed. B. Uncaring.
    C. Humorous. D. Worried.
    11. What is the best title for the text?
    A. The extinction rate of insects gets slowed down.
    B. The failure of nature’ s ecosystems can be avoided.
C Sharp drops in insect numbers endanger ecosystems.
    D. Insect extinction harms the diversity of animal species.
A 9. A 10. D 11. C

根据文章第三段内容:“It should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web—they pollinate(授粉) the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or hate them, we humans cannot survive without insects,” said Prof Dave Goulson at the University of Sussex in the UK.(“这应该引起我们所有人的极大关注,因为昆虫是每一个食物网的核心——它们为绝大多数植物物种授粉,保持土壤健康,循环利用营养,控制害虫,等等。英国苏塞克斯大学的戴夫·古尔森教授说:“不管你喜欢还是讨厌昆虫,没有昆虫我们人类无法生存。”)可知,昆虫对于食物链来说是很重要的。故选A项。
One of the biggest impacts of insect loss is on the many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects.(昆虫消失的最大影响之一是许多以昆虫为食的鸟类、爬行动物、两栖动物和鱼类。) 故选A项。
Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said, “It is alarming to see this collation of evidence that shows the state of the world’ s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’ s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse these terrible trends.”(环保慈善机构Buglife的马特·夏德洛说:“这些证据显示了世界昆虫种群的现状,这是令人震惊的。
Sharp drops in insect numbers endanger ecosystems.
    3. How did Matt Shardlow sound when talking about the state of insect loss?
    A. Relaxed. B. Uncaring.
    C. Humorous. D. Worried
Matt Shardlow, at the conservation charity Buglife, said, “It is alarming to see this collation of evidence that shows the state of the world’ s insect populations. It is increasingly obvious that the planet’ s ecology is breaking and there is a need for an intense and global effort to stop and reverse these terrible trends.”
    D
If you follow any people who like traveling on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed they’ve posted amazing photos from Portugal in the last few years, especially during peak summer months.Mario Fernandes,a cocreator and the editor of GoLisbon said he had seen increased interest in traveling to Portugal in the past five years, particularly in the last two or three.Cindy Goldberger,a travel adviser for Hiatus,an agency in Brooklyn,New York, said that she noticed an increase in Portugal trips about three years ago and that she gets more requests to plan people’s visits there every year.According to Reuters, the number of foreign tourists visiting Portugal hit a record for 2017,and in the same year the country won the world’s leading destination at the World Travel Awards.
Fernandes suggested it’s because Portugal is safe and more affordable than many other Western European countries. The country’s frequent sunshine is also attractive to many visitors. The Algarve, the southernmost area of Portugal,is home to “some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches”,according to Fernandes.Goldberger noted that many airlines have offered better routes to the country in recent years. She’s also a fan of the new hotels that have opened, including farms that have become hotels.
Eric Hrubant, the president of Cire Travel, noted that there is another reason.“It’s a small country, yet you have cities with rich history, culture and food,as well as a lot of beach and golfing options,” he said.“In five to ten days, you can have a vacation or honeymoon that caters to(满足) all of your senses and desires.”
Hrubant pointed out that celebrities(名人) like Madonna and newlyweds Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander have moved to Portugal, which has put the country on more people’s radar(受到更多人的关注).
So you don’t know where to go for a vacation this summer? Now you can make a better decision
    12. What does Paragraph 1 mainly say about Portugal?
    A. It’s doing its best to attract tourists. B. It’s been made popular by Instagram.
    C. It’s become a popular tourist destination. D. Its development depends on its tourism.
    13. According to Cindy Goldberger, what encourages more people to go to Portugal?
    A. Lower expenses. B. Beautiful beaches.
    C. Frequent sunshine. D. Convenient transportation.
    14. How did Madonna make Portugal more popular?
    A. By recommending it. B. By settling down there.
    C. By spending her honeymoon there. D. By inviting her friends to pay a visit there.
    15. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
    A. To encourage people to visit Portugal. B. To recommend some Portuguese trips.
    C. To tell some basic facts about Portugal. D. To explain why Portugal has become famous.

If you follow any people who like traveling on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed they’ve posted amazing photos from Portugal in the last few years, especially during peak summer months(如果你关注任何一个喜欢在Instagram上旅行的人,你可能会注意到他们在过去几年里发布了来自葡萄牙的令人惊叹的照片,尤其是在夏天的高峰月份)可知,本段主要描述了去葡萄牙旅行的人数有所增加。 Mario Fernandes,a cocreator and the editor of GoLisbon(马里奥·费尔南德斯(Mario Fernandes)是《哥利斯本》的联合创始人和编辑),Cindy Goldberger,a travel adviser(辛迪·戈德伯格(Cindy Goldberger)是一名旅行顾问)的评论以及Reuters(路透社)的报道作为例证。
Goldberger noted that many airlines have offered better routes to the country in recent years(戈德伯格指出,许多航空公司近年来提供了更好的飞往该国的航线。)
Hrubant pointed out that celebrities like Madonna and newlyweds Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander have moved to Portugal, which has put the country on more people’s radar(Hrubant指出,像麦当娜、新婚夫妇迈克尔·法斯宾德和艾丽西亚·维坎德这样的名人已经搬到了葡萄牙,这使得这个国家受到了更多人的关注)。
So you don’t know where to go for a vacation this summer? Now you can make a better decision.(所以你不知道今年夏天去哪里度假? 故选A项。
    4. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
    A. To encourage people to visit Portugal. B. To recommend some Portuguese trips.
    C. To tell some basic facts about Portugal. D. To explain why Portugal has become famous.
So you don’t know where to go for a vacation this summer? Now you can make a better decision.。 因此A项:To encourage people to visit Portugal.

    Dear Laura,
Thanks for letting us to stay at your seaside house. Now, you might have heard from your neighbors about which happened on Saturday evening. When I was out a walk, my younger son, Tom, played football before your house. He made so many noise that the neighbors got quite angrily. Even worse, Tom broke one of the window of Mr. Wilson’s house. Tom and I apologized to all the neighbors for the unhappy happenings, but promised to have the broken window repair soon. Tom said that we would not do such silly things any more. I am glad that your neighbors had forgiven us. They are really nice people.
    Yours,
    Betty

let sb. do sth.
短语be out for a walk意为“出去散步”,for表示目的。故out后添加for。
noise为不可数名词,因为需要用much修饰,故many改为much。
故we改为he。
故had改为have。
