I put my bags beneath the seat and stretched out my legs. With a drink in my hand, I picked up my book and settled back for my four-hour flight to LA. This experience stood in contrast to the flight I’d taken a few months before, which included lots of candies and answering the question “Are we there yet?” frequently. On my non-kid flight, somewhere on board, a baby began to cry. Yes, I thought, as I read my book, traveling without kids was great.
My trip was to Hawaii. I was visiting a friend at Maui and running a 15k race. Then we were going to the beach of Oahu for a few days. We ate well and lazed on the beach. I didn’t have to tend to anyone’s needs but my own. But soon it was time to head home, back to responsibility, to where tasks were made harder by cries of “Five more minutes, Mom”.
After boarding for the last leg home, I noticed a mama flying with a baby. I’d been looking forward to sleeping on this final flight. But I found myself helping. Her name was Gabriela and her daughter was Olive, and they were flying to Nashville. Together we put away her things, and I picked up the dropped toys. As the plane began its descent(下降),Olive woke up. Gabriela talked to her in that sweet way a mama talks to her baby. I watched Olive’s face light up at her words, and I smiled in recognition. I’d seen that look on my kids’ faces. That expression of absolute adoration and trust. She’d helped me remember what I love about being a mom. When we landed, I helped Gabriela set up the stroller and waved them goodbye.
Then I hurried to my home, where my kids were waiting. When I walked through the door, their faces lit up like Christmas and they ran over to hold me tight. Yes, it’s nice to get away but nicer to come home.
    24. What happened to the author on the flight to LA?
    A. She worried about her safety.
    B. She was busy caring for her kids.
    C. She enjoyed herself all the way.
    D. She became impatient with a baby’s cry.
    25. Why did the author go to Oahu?
    A. To go on a vacation. B. To take part in a race.
    C. To achieve tough tasks. D. To call on her old friend.
    26. What was it about the woman that moved the author most?
    A. Her unique way of nursing. B. Her adoration for the author.
    C. Her optimistic attitude to life. D. Her close interaction with her baby.
    27. What does the author realize from the experience?
    A. Kids’ love is a mother’s power.
    B. Family is the most important life.
    C. Nothing is happier than being a mother.
    D. Mother love is the greatest thing in the world.

    C.
When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees(黑猩猩). The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish—the cleaner wrasse—has also spotted its reflection.
Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection—when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even try to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.
But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse fish is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.
One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar(回声定位) to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.
Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant(自我知晓的),but not the same extent(程度) as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.
28.Why are dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees mentioned in the text?
    A. They are as clever as humans.
    B. They have some sense of self.
    C. They have the same intelligence.
    D. They are widely used in experiments.
29.The study on the cleaner wrasse made Alex Jordan______.
    A. doubt whether the mirror test is reliable
    B. discover the secret about the fish’s sight
    C. develop a better method to replace the mirror test
    D. believe the cleaner wrasse is as smart as chimpanzees
30.Which of the following can replace the underlined part “wrestled with”?
    A. presented with B. ended with C. struggled with D. agreed with
31.What can we learn from the text?
    A. It is relatively easy to test animals’ consciousness.
    B. Some concepts for humans can’t be applied to animals.
    C. Animals rely on at least two senses to get to know themselves.
    D. More tests need to be done to prove the cleaner wrasse is self-aware.

    D.
Differences in time zones complicate international phone calls. But even more important are different concepts of time and approaches to time in different cultures.
People from the USA as well as other North Americans believe “Time is money”. This value of time is rooted in their ancestors. Early in the 17th century, their ancestors arrived on the Atlantic coast, a new, undeveloped land. To survive in the tough environment, they had to struggle day and night. Time meant so much to them that they had not even one second to waste. After decades of struggle, they developed the value of efficient use of time and passed it down. Thus far, the Americans are still eager to finish things quickly and are impatient with too reflective(深思熟虑) people.
In some countries, the American work style of speeding everything up will have no significance. In the Arab East, the more important you are, the faster service you get. Close relatives take absolute priority(优先权);non-relatives are kept waiting. In the Middle East, a deadline, which is often established to show the degree of urgency or importance of work, will do nothing but stop the Middle Easterners from working, because they consider it rude and overly demanding.
Another aspect reflecting different concepts of time is the classification of monochronic-time and polychronic-time by Edward T Hall. People from monochronic(共时性的) cultures, such as the Germans, the Austrians, the Swiss and the Americans, do only one important thing at a time. In polychronic cultures, people such as Arabs, Asians and Latin Americans take an entirely opposite approach. They do several things at once. Time commitments, e.g. deadlines, schedules, are taken rather casually and changed often and easily Miscommunication will arise when people from the two cultures contact(接触). Charlies Hawkins, a U.S. teacher, told me that many a time his appointments with Indians were interrupted constantly, not only by private phone calls, but also by long conversations with other people and even the neighbor’s children, which displeased and even annoyed him.
32.Why did the ancestors of the North Americans believe “Time is money”?
    A. They formed the habit of finishing work ahead of time.
    B. They got the idea from their past generations.
    C. They didn’t like to deal with reflective people.
    D. They had to work efficiently to survive.
33.What can be concluded from Paragraph 3?
    A. Deadlines will make American people angry.
    B. In the Arab East, you’d better speed everything up.
    C. Middle Easterners can’t deal with demanding work.
    D. People from the Arab East attach importance to relationship.
34.What can we learn about people from monochronic cultures?
    A. They tend to interrupt others constantly.
    B. They can’t tolerate lateness or interruptions.
    C. They are more likely to change their schedules.
    D. They like to schedule several activities at the same time.
35.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
    A. The importance of the diversity of culture
    B. The relationship between efficiency and culture
    C. Different time values in different cultures
    D. Monochronic culture and polychronic culture

    My Perfect Imperfect Life
A few years ago, I was standing at the barre (扶手杠) waiting for my adult ballet class when I heard a voice behind me. “So, do you have this perfect life?”
My first reaction was to 41 who was being asked such an odd question. Then I remembered there were only two of us in the room. When I turned 42 , the other woman was looking straight at me.
I had no idea how to answer it. Was she 43 ? Who has a perfect life? Sure, occasionally I did find the perfect dress or the perfect pair of shoes, 44 never would I use that word to describe anything about me or my life. I felt a twinge of guilt for somehow giving her that 45 .

    Dear Mrs. Zhang,
I’m sorry to hear that you have such a difficult problem. In your letter, you said you have some difficulties in learning English. This is a normal problem that every student could suffer, so I think I can give you some useful suggestions.
My suggestions are as follows. Firstly, you should listen to the teachers carefully in the class. Secondly, the best way to learn English is reading it well and knowing the meanings of it. Thirdly, you can speak English with your classmates and teachers, which can improve your listening and speaking abilities. What’s more, the most important advice is reading English books before the class and after the class.
Hopefully,my suggestions would help you find the way to learn English well.

     Yours,
     Li Hua
