Given Europes high concentration of gorgeous big cities and world-class art museums, it is easy to completely overlook the continents abundance of small, quiet villages and towns. However, if you are after relaxation, peaceful country walks, beautiful architecture and opportunities for cultural appreciation on your next trip across the pond, consider cutting down some of your city time and head out to a village instead. Here are four of the most charming villages in Europe, along with our top picks for places to stay in each.

    Hotel pick: Hotel Belle Epoque

    Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy

Spread over a hilltop nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, the Tuscan village of Montepulciano offers gorgeous Renaissance architecture as well as opportunities to visit wine companies. Surrounded by strong walls dating back to the 14th century, the village features a handful of churches and public squares.

    Hotel pick: Etruria Resort

    Oia in Santorini, Greece

Oia is undoubtedly the most charming village on the beautiful Greek island of Santorini. In my career as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.

Tyler was born infected with HIV; his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medication to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein(血管) in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medications were fastened to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed extra oxygen to support his breathing.

Tyler wasn’t willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine backpack. All of us were surprised at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler’s mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, she could quickly spot him.

This terrible disease eventually wore down Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became apparent that he wasnt going to survive, Tylers mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that he would be with him soon in heaven.

A few days before his death, Tyler signed me over to his hospital bed and whispered, “I might die soon. I’m not scared. When I die, please dress me in red. Mom promised she’s coming to heaven, too. I’ll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me.”

    24. What does the writer think of his/her work according to Paragraph 1?

    A. Its impressive.               B. Its regretful.

    C. Its funny.                   D. Its meaningless.

    25. What happened to Tyler when he was five?

    A. He was infected with HIV.      B. He was operated on.

    C. He received a gift.             D. He became seriously ill.

    26. How did the writer feel when seeing Tyler playing joyfully?

    A. Light-hearted.                B. Encouraged.

    C. Terrified                     D. Amazed.

    27. What can be inferred from the boys last words?

    A. He was grateful for the writers kindness.

    B. He felt sorry for his moms death.

    C. His mother had a deep affection for him.

    D. He missed the red dress his mother promised him.

    C

The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers(减速带) on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers,” India’s transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote.

The optical illusions(视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organization, over 200,000 people are killed by road accidents.

The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones on a highway.

However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India’s decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.

    28. Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads?

    A. To make the surroundings more beautiful.

    B. To attract the attention of tourists.

    C. To reduce the rate of traffic accidents.

    D. To try out this kind of new painting.

    29. The underlined word hazard in paragraph 2 can be replaced by __________.

    A. Threat        B. Reminder       C. Regulation       D. Theory

    30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?

    A. The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.

    B. The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out.

    C. Philadelphia is the second place to use virtual speed breakers in the US.

    D. The use of optical illusions as speed breakers is debatable in India.

    31. Whats the authors attitude towards 3D zebra crossings?

    A. Indifferent.    B Objective.     C. Supportive.    D. Critical.

The United Arab Emirates is mostly a desert. However, this has not stopped the country from creating great building projects. On September 26, UAE officials announced another ambitious project-Mars Science City. Expansive deserts and miles of coastline provide plenty of options for safe rocket launches(发射). And its position on the Earth makes it especially appealing as the spin of the Earth provides an extra push, meaning less fuel is needed to get payloads into orbit. All these seem to make it possible.

The Mars City Project, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, will provide a realistic model to simulate(模仿) living on the surface of Mars, the red planet. It is part of the UAEs Mars 2117 Project to lead the global race to land humans on Mars and be the first to build a settlement there. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, says, The UAE seeks international support to develop technologies that benefit humans, and lay the foundation of a better future for more generations to come.

Built outside Dubai, the 1.9 million square feet city is expected to cost $135 million. It will consist of several dome-shaped laboratories, similar to the ones imagined for the first Mars settlers. Scientists from around the world will be invited to conduct research to come up with methods to create food, water and energy, using techniques which can be copied onto the red planets conditions as much as possible.

The research city will also include a museum featuring famous space achievements to help educate and inspire children to undertake space exploration and discovery. To discover whether the construction method works on Mars, the museums walls will be 3D printed using the sand from the nearby desert. Now, if they would only add some living quarters for the general public to experience life on Mars without leaving Earth, life would be perfect.

    32. What can we conclude about the United Arab Emirates?

       A. It is short of fine weather.

       B. It is a nice place for launching.

       C. It can provide adequate fuel supply.

       D. It has the greatest architects in the world.

    33. What will scientists do in the laboratories?

       A. Educate visitors on trips to Mars.

       B. Develop the Mars settlers imagination.

       C. Find ways to produce food, water and energy on Mars.

       D. Create a climate-controlled environment for future use.

    34. Why will the museum walls be 3D printed?

       A. To show famous space technologies.

       B. To make full use of the nearby desert.

       C. To inspire children to love exploration.

       D. To test building skills used by Mars settlers.

    35. Whats the best title for the text?

       A. UAE to Build Mars Science City

       B. UAEs Great Exploration of Mars

       C. UAE to Build First Mars Settlement

       D. UAEs Scientific Contribution to Humans

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Have you used “um…” “like…” “you know…” in your speech? Crutch words(口头禅) are unnecessary words used to fill up dead paces while you speak. Speaking too many crutch words is like a bad habit that we are unaware of. While most people tend to ignore it in everyday conversation, in a formal speech or an interview, too many crutch words can make even the best presentation look bad.   36

Stop when we are in doubt. Crutch words are used more often when a person is unsure about the sentence to use next.   37 If you are lost or in doubt over what to say next, just stop speaking, take a long pause, breathe in , figure out what to say and start again.

Speak consciously and slowly. If the speech is too long and you talk continuously without thinking, then you might also be pushing in a few crutch words in between. 38 It is best to memorize the tricky parts of the speech, like the introduction and the conclusion where a majority of the crutch words are used.

39 Preparing for the speech is very important when trying to remove crutch words. Make it a point to pause when there is a comma or give two pauses at the end of the sentence. If certain words in the speech need to be emphasized then underline them and practice them as they need to be said.

Avoid crutch words in conversations. Get a friend or your partner to help you out when rehearsing a conversation.   40 Although it can be an unpleasant and often embarrassing process, in the long run it helps in cutting down on crutch words.

    A. Practice your speech when you can.

    B. Remember the saying that silence is golden.

    C. Therefore we can find out best friends to guide us well.

    D. Anytime you use a crutch word, the friend can point it out.

    E. So we should learn some ways to avoid speaking such words.

    F. Structure the speech well to include as much information as is needed.

    G. The mind is so busy trying to figure out what to say that there is a strong urge to speak such words.

Many people have recognized the importance of protecting the Yangtze River, a third longest river in the world. And many organizations and projects have been set up to deal with the problem. The Green River organization, for example, which educates people on the importance of protecting this great river. It also watches the river and stops the illegally hunting of animals, which has put the wild animals population in danger.

Two special government projects are also under way. The first project, a water and soil conservation project, set up in 1989. This project resulted in farmers replace their crops with trees or grass. The second project includes nature reserves for white-flag dolphins, the number of which have dropped because of pollution in the Yangtze River.
