Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary(秘书) showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight.

24The writer always refuses to give people directions because _____________.

Ashe is a stranger to the city Bshe doesn’t know the people

Cshe has no time to help others Dshe’s afraid of giving wrong directions

25A man stopped the writer on the way to _____________.

Asell her something Bask her the time

Cmake friends with her Dask for the direction

26The Friendship Building is the place where the writer ______________.

    Alives Bstudies

    Cworks Dteaches

27Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

AThe writer is too shy to give others directions.

BThe writer has a very poor sense of direction.

CThe writer never got lost when she was young.

DThe man was quite nervous when he saw the writer.

    C

Cowboys, policemen, princesses and superheroes are all characters kids choose to be on any given day. Putting on a play can be a fun activity that lets them act out their favorite characters as well as use their artistic ability to create the stage.

Best of all, they will be able to use their favorite line “ look at me” as the audience sits down to enjoy the production.

Help your kids decide on a play they would like to act out. Use the Internet or the library to find scripts (剧本) for older reading kids. For younger kids, they can act out a favorite story or a fairy tale. Of course, you could always help them write their own scripts.

Decide how many characters are needed. Invite neighbors and friends to be in your play or let your kids play more than one character. Make sure you teach them to change the way they look, move and speak so the audience can tell the difference.

Search for costumes and props (道具) supplies. Find clothes from your closet or attic (阁楼) , or go to a garage sale. Help everyone make a mask or put on makeup to represent their characters.

Get creative. Make tickets, invitations, movie posters and props for your kids’ play. You can even decorate a curtain and hang it in front of the stage. Set up chairs for the audience.

Choose your music. Pick something that goes with the theme of the play. Ask someone to play the piano or have the kids make up songs and help them make homemade instruments.

Rehearse the play. The more the play is practiced, the better it will be. Try starting early in the summer and practicing once a week. Set out a snack after rehearsal and make it light-hearted and fun. Then perform the play at the end of the summer vacation.

Invite the audience to sit down and enjoy the play.

28Which of the following characters may not be chosen by kids?

    APolicemen. BPrincesses.

    CSuperheroes. DBeggars.

29What can we learn from the passage?

APutting on a play can improve kids’ imagination.

BKids of different ages should choose the same script.

CA kid can act out different characters in the same play.

DDifferent costumes and props are not important on stage.

30The underlined word “ Rehearse” has the closest meaning to “___________”.

    Aresearch Breview

    Cpractice Dremember

31Which is the best title for the passage?

AHow to Help Kids to Put on a Play

BHow to Give Kids Useful Advice on Performances

CHow to Get Kids Interested in Performing

DHow to Teach Kids to Show Their Character

    D

As Simon Kindleysides, 34, took his first step in the London Marathon in April, he felt as if magic was in the air.

"As we were walking toward the first mile, we actually started joining all the runners," he said. "Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment." As time went on, the crowds and other racers spread around. Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.

Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(体外骨骼)to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving.

In 2013, Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor (肿瘤) that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs. He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had "always wanted to run a marathon," he said, but he never made the plan to do so--until this year.

During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest. "At that point, I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally," Kindleysides said. But he kept going. "I didn't want to let people down. I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity," he said. "I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far, I would have to continue."So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot.

Then, recovering at home, he shared his accomplishment with his three children. "They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad, the only one who has walked a marathon," he said.

Kindleysides is training to complete three more marathons next year, including the London Marathon again.

32Why did Kindleysides' supporters accompany him all the way?

ATo help change the batteries. BTo inspire him as a team.

CTo guide him along the road. DTo assist him with the wheelchair.

    33What caused Kindleysides' disability?

AAn operation on his brain for the tumor.    BAn accident in the previous marathon.

CSome nerves produced out of the tumor.    DThe pressure from the brain tumor on the nerves.

34What partly supported Kindleysides to finish the hardest two-mile race?

AThe prize money for the winner. BThe strong desire to recover.

CThe kindness to help the charity. DThe belief to beat others.

35What can we learn about Kindleysides?

AHe was once a successful actor.

BHe is ambitious for joining in London marathons once more.

CHis children feel a pity for him in the wheelchair now.

DHe was the first disabled man to complete the London Marathon.

How to avoid a boring conversation

What excuse should you use to avoid talking to people you don’t want to talk to? Here are tips and non-offensive ways to get out of unwanted conversations.

    1. Go for a refill.

It is natural for anyone at a party to be excused to get a refill. 36 And once you excuse yourself, make a move fast before the person requests you to get a refill for him as well.

    2. Pretend bad mood.

Cut off the conversation before it starts by saying something along the lines of “I’m not in a good mood. Can I talk to you later if you don’t mind? 37 Say it firmly so that people get the message loud and clear.

    3. Ask your friend to save you.

38 Simply text your friend and ask him or her to come for apparently something important. You will be able to skip a boring chat with a seemingly reasonable excuse.

    4. 39

You are advised to look away from that person and don’t make eye contact, so that you can give powerful hints that you find the conversation extremely boring. 40 Be sure to tune in to the conversation every now and then so you don’t come across as rude.

ABehave in an obviously careless way.

BJust be sure that the person you are talking to does not offer to accompany you to do so.

CDon’t act too polite in an attempt to draw sympathy.

DUse body language to indicate boredom.

E.Your friend is bound to perform brilliantly in coping with the dull one.

F.Look elsewhere and pretend that something else has caught your attention.

G.Stuck in an unwanted conversation, how do you get out of it?

I’m very glad to receive your invitation. It’s my honor to introduce Chinese painting in the column of our school’s newspaper.

As an important part of Chinese culture, Chinese painting can date back to more than 2,000 years ago. Three major kinds of subject matter consist of the most popular themes of traditional Chinese painting, which are birds and flowers, people and landscapes of the countryside, mountains and sea. In the history of Chinese painting, there were many famous painters, such as Tang Bohu, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, and so on. Nowadays, Chinese painting is becoming more and more popular and highly thought of throughout the world.
