Based on Mark Twain’s famous novel, the film tells a story about a poor American young man who is given a one-million-pound banknote by two rich brothers. He goes through many funny and embarrassing situations and experiences the attitudes of people towards money. I strongly recommend it for two reasons. First, the story is humorous and meaningful, making us reflect on the role of money in life. Besides, the language is standard and easy to follow, which is helpful for our English listening and vocabulary. I believe it’ll be popular among students. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【答案】 At first, Kayla felt disappointed at her parents’ plan for the holiday. How eagerly she wanted to go out to play with her friends! She was against the annoying plan from the bottom of her heart, but she had no choice. Sighing heavily, Kayla’s eyes were filled with disappointment. First, Kayla was arranged to wash the breakfast dishes. After that, she was asked to give their puppy a bath. She knew it was a hard task, which demanded lots of energy, patience and care from her. She began the work with great unwillingness. But things began to change as she was doing the housework. Brushing the puppy, she found it was a lot of fun with so many soap bubbles. Then it was on to yard work where Kayla helped to pick up sticks. She pretended the small sticks were basketballs, and shot them into a large trash can. So the work was done with great pleasure. Kayla felt proud to see how much better the yard looked. When she finished her meaningful chores, Kayla enjoyed relaxing in her tree house. The lemonade tasted wonderful after a hard day of work. 1. B Kiley Crisp, a 15-year-old teenager, has Williams syndrome (威廉姆斯综合症), a rare genetic (基因的) disorder that causes learning and developmental issues. Despite her outgoing personality, Kiley sometimes struggles to make friends. Last year, however, she met two amazing girls at a summer camp she went to. The girls, who live far away from her, daily contact Kiley. They call her, check in on her using social media, and make her feel deeply loved. Kiley was out to dinner with family to celebrate her turning 15. She was extremely moved to find that her friends drove three hours to celebrate her birthday! In a video posted by her sister Ashley on social media, Kiley is seen moved to tears at how kind her friends were to surprise her on her birthday. In the video, the 15-year-old is seen happily dancing around in a cafe. Then she feels two girls coming towards her. She realizes they are her two good friends. With the move towards a cashless society, pocket money is going digital. To reflect “the change”, many mobile budgeting (预算) apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service to children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor spending. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a pre-paid card. These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi — 1.2 million users globally — has virtual savings jars where children can put money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a prepaid card that is currently used in Sweden only, but is expected to be unveiled elsewhere in Europe. Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. “You don’t become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says. But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. The area should “have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject”, she says. “Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money.” 28. What’s the main function of these mobile budgeting apps A. To teach parents to use digital tools. B. To enable children to get rich quickly. C. To inspire children to use cash wisely. D. To help children manage their money. 29. What does the underlined word “unveiled” in paragraph 3 mean A. Introduced. B. Contributed. C. Conquered. D. Interrupted. 30. What do Catherine Winter’s words mean A. Digital tools can help a lot with finance. B. Money management requires financial ability. C. A regular classroom-based financial education is needed. D. Children can get the most out of their money with the apps. 31. What is the text mainly about A. The future of a cashless society. B. The rise of the digital piggy bank. C. The importance of financial education. D. The popularity of money management. D Does forgiveness go against our human nature To address this, we need to ask a further question: What makes us human Simply put, people hold two contrasting views on humanity (人性). The first centers on control and power. In an early paper on forgiveness, Droll (1984) wrote that human nature leans more towards aggression (攻击性) than forgiving allows. Those who forgive are against what they’re built for, much to their harm. He believes that forgivers are risking their own well-being (安康) as they show forgiveness to others, who might then take advantage of them. For the second view, we see respect and love, in the sense of serving others, in the work of Lewis, Amini, and Lannon (2001). They present the scientific argument that we need both to receive love from and offer love to others. From this second viewpoint, forgiveness plays a key role in the general health of both individuals and communities, both physically and mentally, because one of the results of forgiveness, shown through scientific studies, is the reduction of hate and the reestablishment of harmony. Considering that control and disrespect can affect a person’s mental and relational well-being, the first approach does not seem workable as a way to live. Considering that forgiveness has been shown in many studies to increase well-being, the second approach works better in philosophy and social science. Even common sense strongly suggests that the will to power over others does not make for harmonious relationships. Consider, how well has slavery (奴隶制) worked as a way of social harmony As an important warning, when we take a Classical Realist philosophical viewpoint, that of Aristotle, we see the difference between possibility and actuality. We are not necessarily born with the ability to forgive, but we have the chance to learn and get better at it. The actuality of forgiving, its actual application in conflict (冲突) situations, grows with certain training. 32. What is Droll’s idea about forgiveness A. It is a sign of weakness. B. It is a part of human nature. C. It is a threat to one’s well-being. D. It is a natural response to aggression. 33. Why does the author mention “slavery” in paragraph 3 A. To attack the unfairness of the system. B. To stress the importance of management. C. To show the bad effects of too much control. D. To promote the idea of harmonious relationships. 34. What is the author’s attitude toward forgiveness A. Passive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive. 35. How is forgiveness developed according to Aristotle A. Learned practice. B. Social upbringing. C. Born nature. D. Outside pressure. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 People disagree about meaningful and small matters on a daily basis. An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily. “How was school, Kayla ” asked her mom. “It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday.” “You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh ” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh. Kayla slept in the next morning. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn’t believe it. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today Isn’t Labor Day a holiday ” “Yes, Kayla.
