Gleinetser realized that adding CO t the water makes it react with rcks and get lcked away as carbnates (碳酸盐). A cmpany called Carbfix is already turning CO int minerals this way in Iceland.
In lab tests, irn-rich vlcanic rck was first heated t 90°C in sealed cntainers under high pressure, and then CO -rich water was pared with water added with ther gases such as argn (氩气), the CO -rich water released mre hydrgen, prbably because carbnic acid brke dwn rck and allwed mre reactin.
The researchers were able t release abut 0.5% f the hydrgen which was theretically pssible t btain frm reacting water with the rck. But they think 1% is needed fr wrkability. A prmising way is t g deeper undergrund, where higher temperatures enhance serpentinisatin.
