When we are treated withut respect, ur initial reactin tends t be anger and an urge t strike back instantly t dminate the argument. Yet such a respnse nly leaves us at a disadvantage. The mre fiercely we react, the
deeper we slip int a psychlgical trap knwn as the Hercules Effect (赫拉克勒斯效应). It refers t the fact that sme peple deliberately release disrespect as a trap, attempting t drag us int negative emtins. Once we fall fr it, we will sacrifice ur mental peace and energy.
Many peple mistakenly assume that respect has t be btained by prving persnal value. Actually, gaining respect is mre accessible than expected. Psychlgists label the essential strategy as “nn-defensive calm
bundary hlding” — remaining calm withut t much explanatin r unnecessary aplgy. Respect is a learnable skill rather than a talent fr charming persnalities. Keeping calm remves excuses thers have fr quarrels and prevents ffensive reactins.
A study cnducted by the University f Califrnia, Berkeley reveals that “calm bundary setting” lwers
individuals’ stress hrmnes (荷尔蒙). A calm state can stabilize thers’ nervus systems and inspire them t
fllw suit. In additin, pen gestures, cntrlled breathing and relaxed facial expressins cntribute t ur self-cntrl and cnfidence.
Three principles apply t establishing calm bundaries. First, express yurself briefly and plitely t cnvey determinatin. Secnd, adpt a neutral tne withut emtinal instability. Third, declare yur limits firmly withut cnsultatin. Fr instance, “I’m unavailable tnight” is much mre effective than hesitatin and cmprmise.
Practicing calm bundaries may bring pressure, especially fr thse accustmed t pleasing thers. Sme may even regard refusal as an ffense. Nevertheless, we can begin with minr daily ccasins. By sticking t calm
bundaries, we will gradually win sincere respect and escape the Hercules Effect.
      8. What des the Hercules Effect refer t?
      A. A strategy fr btaining respect. B. A way used t verpwer thers in quarrels.
      C. A phenmenn f lsing self-cntrl. D. A trap set by thers’ intentinal disrespect.
      9. What des the Berkeley study suggest abut “calm bundary setting”?
      A. It bsts individuals’ stress hrmnes. B. It reduces tensin hrmnes and calms thers.
      C. It calls fr pen gestures and cntrlled breathing. D. It mainly relies n relaxed facial expressins.
      10. Which is ne rule f setting calm bundaries?
      A. Talk with strng angry feelings. B. Ask thers fr permissin f yur limits.
      C. State yur needs shrtly and plitely. D. Make lts f cmprmises every time.
      11. What is the main purpse f the text?
      A. T discuss stress hrmnes. B. T advise staying calm fr respect.
      C. T explain hw t avid quarrels. D. T describe a study n stress.

There’s a grwing view that generative AI weakens yung peple’s thinking, leading t calls fr bans and
restrictins. Yet research shws its impact varies greatly depending n hw yung peple use it and their scial and emtinal supprt systems.
A large-scale study f 13 t 24-year-lds in America was cnducted in Nvember 2025. The study invlving ver 100 detailed questins abut AI use, its impacts n daily life, and mental health, revealed fur distinct user

emtinal pain, as many f them face bullying, discriminatin r serius financial pressure in daily life. Thugh AI
cmpanins may be better than having n supprt at all, general-purpse AI systems are nt designed t take n this rle safely and cannt reliably recgnize when a yung persn needs t be directed t prfessinal mental health help.
Rughly a tenth f yung peple keep a safe distance frm AI entirely, as they feel anxius abut its ptential negative impacts. This grup explains AI ften increases their anxiety due t cncerns abut being watched and
privacy leaks. Over half f yung peple, hwever, use AI in a practical way, treating it as a practical tl rather than a reliance, thanks t their strng scial supprt and sense f belnging.
Plicymakers shuld nt fcus merely n limiting yung peple’s expsure t AI. Instead, a cmprehensive apprach is needed, including setting up smart and strng safeguards fr AI systems, building effective paths frm AI tls t human care services, and helping parents have mre infrmed and in-depth cnversatins with teens
abut AI’s advantages and ptential risks.
Ultimately, AI itself des nt determine yung peple’s well-being, but it des reflect and smetimes highlight the strengths r gaps in the human supprt systems arund them.
      12. What d “pwer users” think f generative AI?
      A. An emtinal aid. B. A substitute fr friends.
      C. A cause f anxiety. D. A beneficial learning tl.
      13. What can be knwn abut general-purpse AI systems?
      A. They safely ffer emtinal supprt. B. They fail t detect mental crises.
      C. They are designed fr learning. D. They reduce privacy cncerns.
      14. What can be inferred abut plicymakers’ current apprach?
      A. It has built safe AI systems. B. It ignres AI’s negative impacts.
      C. It encurages parent-teen talks. D. It nly restricts yungsters’ AI use.
      15. What des the text say abut AI itself?
      A. It directly shapes teenagers’ mental well-being. B. It can fully replace prfessinal mental services.
      C. It mirrrs human supprt systems arund teens. D. It remves teenagers’ sense f belnging.
