A White Whale Changed My Life
This is the ninth year that I have been calling fr an end t whale shws. I was the first female whale trainer in Suth China, but an unfrgettable experience with a white whale named Sphie changed me.
One day in 2012, I was having a shw underwater with Sphie at an aquarium (水族馆). Suddenly, she bit (咬) my arm and pulled me dwn int the deep water again and again. I tried hard t break away, but I culd nt. I felt very afraid and clsed my eyes hpelessly.
Befre I passed ut, Sphie, t my surprise, gently let g f my arm and pushed (推动) me ut f the water. At that mment, I lked int her sad eyes. Maybe she wanted smene t help her. Later, Sphie still finished the shw with me.
After that unusual day, I started reading many bks abut white whales and learned that they swim hundreds f kilmeters every day and live in clse family grups. But at the aquarium, Sphie was kept in a small pl alne. I culdn’t bring myself t watch her suffer (受苦), s I n lnger trained her.
I left my jb as a trainer that mnth. I psted vides nline t shw hw hard Sphie’s life was in the aquarium. As the weather gets warmer, sme ice melts during summer, and large pieces f ice break ff and fall int the cean. These changes make it easier fr plants t grw n land that was freezing cld with ice r snw all year rund.
The grwth f green plants in Antarctica may seem amazing, but it can make the Earth even warmer. Antarctica acts like a large mirrr (镜子). It pushes the sunlight back int space t keep ur planet cl. Hwever, as the ice turns int water and green plants grw, dark and green clrs shw up. The green plants are like a black T-shirt in summer — they keep mre heat (热量). This makes the Earth even warmer, and then mre ice melts.
This creates serius prblems fr the whle wrld. First, melting ice in Antarctica makes sea levels (海平面) g up. This means many cities by the sea may be under water. Peple there will have t leave their hmes. The higher temperatures are als bad fr farming. It is t ht fr plants t grw well. We may nt have enugh fd t eat. They invited 20 students t slve the puzzles while listening t the matching music. Each student needed t slve all the puzzles, and they had nly three minutes fr each ne, s mst f the puzzles stayed unslved in the end.
After that, these students went t sleep in a quiet lab while scientists carefully recrded their brain activities with special equipment. Befre falling asleep, all students were tld that if they dreamed abut any unslved puzzle, they shuld keep thinking and wrking n it in their mind. When they were in REM sleep, scientists played the music fr half f the unslved puzzles, with n music played fr the ther half fr cmparisn (对比).
The next mrning, the 20 students shared their real dream experiences. Abut 75% f them reprted that they dreamed abut the unslved puzzles. Amng them, 60% said the puzzles with the matching music shwed up mre ften in their dreams than the thers withut music.
All puzzles were mre likely t be slved after ne night’s sleep. But surprisingly, the nes that shwed up in dreams were 42% mre likely t be slved, while the thers imprved (提升) by nly 17%.
This study shws that dreaming abut a prblem lets the brain rerganize (重构) infrmatin, and may develp insight. It gives us sudden new ideas and makes the prblem easier t wrk ut.
