less-engaged readers, bys and thse frm lwer-incme backgrunds.
      • Reading f digital-nly materials (e.g. messages, websites and scial media) has fallen sharply since 2023,
alngside wider shifts twards mre visual and AI-driven cntent.
      • Thugh digital devices are ften seen as a threat t reading, they can act as a gateway t reading fr many yung
peple; print remains central and supprts effective reading acrss frmats.
The key challenge is t build inclusive reading cultures that value diverse reading patterns and ensure all
teenagers can develp beneficial sustained reading practices, regardless f frmats. The reprt findings supprt the
principles f the Natinal Year f Reading, validating (认可) teenagers’ cntemprary experiences f reading and
encuraging them t dive int their passin thrugh reading in whatever way that wrks fr them.

As the first rays f sunlight spread acrss suthwest China’s Xizang Autnmus Regin, Tashi Yangzm
studied satellite imagery, her eyes quietly tracking shifting weather systems unflding n the screen. “The weather
here is like a child’s changeable face,” said the 60-year-ld. “We have t learn t read it.”
Brn int a rad maintenance wrker’s family in Xizang’s Bmi Cunty, Yangzm understd the impact f
weather n daily life frm a yung age. “The weather determined my parents’ daily wrk — whether t bring an
umbrella in the mrning, whether cnstructin culd prceed in the afternn and whether the wind wuld pick up
tward evening,” she said, adding that when her parents were wrking utdrs, her heart wuld tighten at the sight
f dark cluds in the sky.
After graduating frm cllege in 1988, Yangzm became a meterlgist (气 象 学 家 ) at the reginal
bservatry in Lhasa. Back then, the mst advanced equipment was a manually perated satellite image receiver.
“The images were unclear, as if we were lking at the mysterius plateau (高 原 ) thrugh frsted glass.
Smetimes, t identify an appraching heavy snwfall, we had t wrk ver 10 hurs,” she recalled.
In 1997, the wrst snwstrm in nearly a century struck nrthern Xizang. Yangzm and her team mved int
the cmputer rm, wrking arund the clck t determine hw deep the snw was and hw far it extended. After
days f adjustments, their self-develped snw mnitring system prvided the regin’s first-ever snw depth data,
enabling authrities t respnd in time and prevent lss f life and livestck.
Althugh Yangzm retired last year, she has been wrking tirelessly t train the next generatin. At her
innvatin studi, she encurages yung prfessinals t chse their wn tpics and lead research with funding
supprt. Figures shw that the number f surface weather statins in Xizang has increased frm 23 in 1965 t 1,284
      tday, cvering all twnships.
“My teacher Tashi Yangzm trained me frm day ne. Yung staff like me will carry n her dedicatin t
Xizang’s meterlgical wrk,” ne yung technician said.
      24. Hw des the authr lead in the tpic f the text?
      A. By giving an example. B. By quting a celebrity.
      C. By presenting a scene. D. By defining a cncept.
      25. Why des the authr mentin Yangzm’s childhd memries?
      A. T detail the hardships f her family.
      B. T explain her early weather awareness.
      C. T shw her parents’ inspiratin t her.
      D. T describe the tugh climate in Xizang.
      26. Which f the fllwing can best describe Yangzm?
      A. Talented and sciable. B. Ambitius and mdest.
      C. Curius and humrus. D. Dedicated and determined.
      27. What d the yung technician’s wrds emphasize?
      A. The cntinuity f cmmitment. B. The imprtance f cperatin.
      C. The demand fr mdern technlgy. D. The ppularity f meterlgy.

On Tuesday, a Beijing startup demnstrated humanid rbts carefully picking up litter and srting flwer
bunches. The event, hsted by X Square Rbt, presented a mdest spectacle (场面) cmpared t the industry’s
usual perfrmance f rbts that can run, flip, and dance. Yet, it shwed a significant shift: Chinese cmpanies like
X Square Rbt are nw fcused n prving the practical value humanids can bring t the messy, unpredictable
envirnments f everyday life, rather than just their stage capabilities.
“The hardware (硬件) is largely there,” said Wang Qian, chief executive f startup X Square Rbt. “But the
brain hasn’t caught up.” Chinese humanid rbts can cmplete half-marathns faster than utstanding athletes, but
tasks that seem simple t the average human — tidying a messy rm, lading a dishwasher, r flding clthes —
remain stubbrnly hard fr these machines.
“Why dn’t marathn rbts face this challenge? Because what they mainly deal with is a cnstant
gravitatinal field,” said Wang. “But when we handle things with ur hands, if we are ff by 0.1 millimeters, the
whle task may fail.” Repetitive actins such as running nly require a rbt t be trained n a relatively simple
dataset. Navigating (管理) a husehld, where n task is ever exactly the same, requires a much mre cmplicated
“brain” that can allw a machine t perceive gravity and light like human beings.
Last mnth, X Square Rbt partnered with a service platfrm that allwed users in Shenzhen t bk a
prfessinal human cleaner and ne f the cmpany’s hme-cleaning rbts. The rbts have served ver 50
      husehlds s far.
While cnsumer feedback (反馈) has been mainly that the machine is slw and awkward, Wang argues that
nly by entering real husehlds can the rbts imprve their ability t perfrm simple tasks. “Smetimes it may
stp t ’think’ halfway while cleaning a table,” Wang said, adding that whenever the rbt breaks dwn r fails t
cmplete a task, a cmpany emplyee will step in remtely.
Wang pinted ut that nce the technlgy matures and rbts becme reliable husehld helpers, the
ptential market size wuld be vast.
      28. What message did the event mainly deliver abut humanid rbts?
      A. A change t their applicatins. B. The great need fr better hardware.
      C. Their amazing stage perfrmance. D. Their efficiency in litter management.
      29. Why are husehld tasks harder fr rbts?
      A. They invlve varying situatins. B. They happen in stable gravity.
      C. They demand human guidance. D. They need greater running speed.
      30. What is Wang’s view n the users’ feedback?
      A. It fcuses n pr after-sales service.
      B. It reveals a design prblem f the rbt.
      C. It is a necessary step fr prgress.
      D. It shws the maturity f AI technlgy.
      31. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. The hardware limits rbt develpment.
      B. A startup leads glbal rbt innvatin.
      C. Chinese rbts turn t practical hme use.
      D. Big markets drive rbt-tech upgrading.
      D
NASA’s Perseverance rver (火星车) has spent ver three years explring Mars’ Jezer Crater (陨石坑). In a
new study, a team has used Perseverance’s data t shw three chemically distinct rck frmatins in the crater
share a surprisingly similar mineral fingerprint — whse rigins appear t be clsely tied t the presence f liquid
      water n ancient Mars.
During its time n the Martian surface, Perseverance has identified three key mineral frmatins. While rcks
frmed frm slidified magma (岩浆) sit bth n the flr f the Jezer Crater and at its bundary, sedimentary (沉
积的) frmatins in its western reaches were likely transprted and left by flwing water in Mars’ distant past.
Hwever, all these frmatins share a strikingly cnsistent set f minerals, whse frmatin typically requires
      water.
T study these frmatins in detail, Clavé’s team drew n data frm Perseverance’s SuperCam instrument, a
remte-sensing tl that can scrutinize rcks frm several meters away using multiple laser-based techniques. By
firing laser pulses at individual rck targets, SuperCam can determine the elemental cmpsitin f a surface and
identify the specific minerals present, with n need fr the rver t get int physical cntact. This apprach allwed
the researchers t build up a cnsistent picture f the mineralgy acrss all three f the frmatins examined by
      Perseverance.
The team’s central finding cncerns minerals cntaining carbn and xygen. Present in all three frmatins,
these carbnates make up as much as 16% f the rck by weight. The researchers argue that these carbnates
frmed thrugh a chemical reactin between the rcks and carbn dixide. This prcess wuld have been driven by
the presence f liquid water, including ht water circulating thrugh the crust, as well as the lake that nce filled
      Jezer Crater.
The influences reach well beynd Jezer. If rcks acrss the Martian surface really underwent a similar
carbnatin prcess, they may cllectively have lcked away a substantial amunt f carbn ver time —
effectively drawing carbn dixide ut f the atmsphere.
In additin, Clavé’s team suggests that this culd have cntributed t the dramatic cling f Mars, which
transfrmed it frm a ptentially habitable, water-rich wrld int the cld, dry planet we bserve tday.
      32. What can be learned abut the three frmatins?
      A. They sit in the center f the crater.
      B. They have a cmmn mineral makeup.
      C. They were nt discvered fr the first time.
      D. They were the result f magma slidificatin.
      33. What des the underlined wrd “scrutinize” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Clean. B. Break. C. Examine. D. Cllect.
      34. What brader impact might the finding have?
      A. It prves ancient Martian life.
      B. It may explain Mars’ climate shift.
      C. It enriches Earth’s mineral study.
      D. It may advance the rver’s imprvement.
      35. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. The Jezer Crater’s Past B. A Rver’s Missin n Mars
      C. Water n Ancient Mars D. Water-Linked Minerals in Martian Rcks

When peple get ready t grw plants in gardens, they usually fcus n swing seeds. In nature, seeds seem t
grw withut fixed rules, yet their germinatin (发芽) actually depends n specific cnditins. 36 S
figuring ut what yur seeds need will help raise germinatin rates and cut dwn waste.
37 Yet they are packed with genetic infrmatin and bilgical prcesses ready t unfld. All it takes
is the right signals and stimuli frm the envirnment t let them knw it’s time t grw.
The mst vital requirement fr mst germinatin is water. 38 But actually, t much water causes the
seed t rt (腐烂) befre this can happen, while t little keeps it inactive. Sme seeds have an especially hard seed
cat, which can be dealt with thrugh “damaging” the cat with a sharp knife. In this way, a grwer can ensure
water can find its way belw. Yu can als leave seeds in warm water fr 24 hurs befre swing.
The ther main cnsideratin fr germinatin is temperature. 39 Mst seeds have an ideal range,
utside f which they will nt germinate. Fr example, when swing chillies, yu shuld place them n a heat mat,
as they need an envirnment arund 21°C. Althugh it’s pssible t get them t germinate at lwer temperatures,
      the results are less reliable.
Similarly, sme seeds wn’t germinate if it is t ht. Seeds frm plants that flwer, drp their seeds t
verwinter and sprut the fllwing spring have evlved t expect a perid f wintry weather befre they
germinate. As fr this, creating winter cnditins fr yur seeds culd lead t better results. This can be as simple
as putting them in the fridge, and string them fr between a cuple f weeks and a cuple f mnths. 40
      A. The exact time depends n their needs.
      B. Watering freshly swn seeds seems simple.
      C. Different seeds require different cnditins.
      D. T an unimaginative eye, seeds lk lifeless.
      E. It’s best t avid watering when the sunlight is t intense.
      F. It is f great significance t chse the prper place t stre yur seeds.
      G. Plenty f new gardeners underestimate its impact when swing their seeds.
