The airprt was a sea f hurried travelers, but time seemed t stand still at the check-in cunter (柜台). My daughter, Maya, sat n her suitcase, her face pale frm the illness that had been draining ur family fr mnths. We were heading t a specialist--ur last hpe--and every penny we had was already tied up in medical bills. I had been certain that children f her age flew fr free, but the agent's vice was firm,"She needs her wn seat. That will be $749. "
My heart sank. That mney was meant fr her treatment, nt the jurney. I stepped away t make phne calls, my vice trembling as I begged fr a lan, fr a miracle, fr anything. Her silent, trusting eyes made my helplessness feel like a physical weight. I had never felt smaller.
Just as I prepared t tell her we culdn't g, the agent called me back. "The ticket has been issued," she said sftly. A stranger had stepped up, swiped a card fr the full amunt, and disappeared int the crwd befre I culd even say a wrd. I never saw his face, never heard his name. We flew that day n the wings f a mystery.
Years later, Maya is healthy. The illness is a fading shadw, but the memry f that day remains vivid. We ften talk abut that unknwn "angel" and it has shaped the way she lives her life.
Nw, whenever she sees smene struggling-a tired parent at a grcery stre r a student shrt n change-she steps in. She knws that kindness desn't have t be a grand, expensive gesture. A strnger bridge allws infrmatin t travel faster, which explains why musically trained children ften perfrm well in secnd-language learning and lgical reasning. By building these neural (神经) highways early, music prepares the yung mind fr challenges far beynd the music rm.
As we grw lder, music becmes a frm f medicine. Fr senirs, cntinuing t play an instrument acts as a natural defence against aging. It effectively slws dwn the decline f memry and creates a "cgnitive reserve (认知储备)" that lwers the risk f brain diseases. Thusands f patients wrldwide are waiting fr life-saving rgan dnatins, with far mre peple n waiting lists than available rgans. While we have made prgress in using livers frm dnrs wh have died after cardiac arrest (心脏骤停), we still face a cruel reality: nearly half f these transplants(移植) are canceled.

If death des nt ccur within this windw, the rgan quality will drp rapidly. Fr fear f higher health risks fr the receiver, dctrs will give up using such rgans. At present, hspitals mainly depend n dctrs' judgment t predict this imprtant perid. Hwever, different judgments ften lead t unnecessary csts and wasted resurces.
T address this, dctrs and researchers at Trnt General Hspital have develped a machine learning mdel. This AI tl was trained n medical data frm ver 2,000 dnrs in several transplant centers. By using data frm nerve, breathing, and bld systems, it can predict a dnr's time f death mre crrectly than human experts. Remarkably, the tl still wrks well even when sme dnr infrmatin is incmplete.
This reliable tl can help medical wrkers make wiser, data-driven decisins. In tests, the AI tl did better than experienced dctrs and cut useless rgan preparatins by 60%. Such an advance reduces the situatins where wrkers prepare rgans nly t find them unsuitable, which ften puts heavy financial and peratinal pressure n transplant centers.
The research, recently published in Lancet Digital Health, shws the great ptential f AI in saving lives. Lking ahead, the team plans t adapt the tl and test it n heart and lung transplants. This technlgy prmises a future where mre patients in need can receive the life-saving treatment they need.
