Expert birdwatchers have changes in their brain structure (结构) cmpared with beginners, which prbably help them better identify birds and slw age-related cgnitive (认知的) lss.
When learning r practising a skill, the brain rerganises itself. This ability is called neurplasticity. Fr example, prfessinal musicians shw structural changes in brain regins related t hearing.
T understand whether birding als shapes the brain, Erik Wing at Yrk University in Canada and his clleagues analysed brain structure and functin in 48 hbbyist birders, half experts and half beginners. They were aged 22 t 79 and bth grups were similar in terms f sex, age and educatin. During brain scans (扫描), the birders were shwn a bird image fr less than 4 secnds. Abut 10 secnds later, they tried identifying the same bird in ne f fur images, each shwing a different species. “We intentinally picked highly cnfusable bird species,” said Wing. The task was repeated 72 times, using images f 18 bird species, six f which were lcal and 12 f which weren’t.
As expected, expert birders perfrmed better. On average, they crrectly identified 83% f lcal birds and 61% f nn-lcal nes. In cntrast, beginners gt nly 44% crrect fr bth. While identifying nn-lcal birds, three brain regins became mre active in expert birders, but nt in beginners. These regins are related t bject identificatin, image prcessing, attentin and wrking memry. Mrever, these brain regins appeared mre structurally cmplex (复杂的) and rganised in expert birdwatchers, suggesting building expertise in birding reshapes the brain.
As we age, brain structure nrmally becmes less cmplex. But this change was less nticeable in expert birders, suggesting birding may help build cgnitive reserve, the brain’s ability t prtect itself against ageing and adapt t damage. “Maintaining brain activity with specialised abilities may reduce the effects f ageing,” said Rbert Zatrre at McGill University in Canada. Hwever, t really knw whether the brain changes are due t birding, researchers wuld have t scan the brain ver mnths t years.
32.Why des the authr mentin prfessinal musicians?
      A. T talk abut different life skills.
      B. T illustrate the idea f neurplasticity.
      C. T shw musicians’ great talent.
      D. T cmpare music with birdwatching.
33.What made it hard fr the birders t identify the birds in the task?
      A. Much repetitin f the task itself.
      B. Inclusin f mre nn-lcal birds.
      C. Clse similarity amng bird species.
      D. Imprper timing fr image viewing.
34.What did the brain scans find abut expert birders?
      A. N brain changes related t ageing.
      B. Quicker brain respnses t lcal birds.
      C. The same cmplexity f the brain as beginners’.
      D. Greater activity and finer rganizatin f the brain.
