An experimental treatment that causes AIDS patients t develp a dangerusly high fever has shwn prmise as a way f prlnging and imprving the patients’ life.
Called the Bilgic-HT System, the new treatment lets dctrs extract the bld f a patient and heat it befre circulating it back int the bdy. The heated bld causes the patient’s bdy temperature t rise abve 42 degrees Celsius. In peple with AIDS, that increase in temperature kills sme heat-sensitive HIV, the virus, mst dctrs say, causes AIDS.
Heating the bld f AIDS patients has been tried befre, say dctrs. But during previus attempts, the treatment induced deadly chemical changes in the bld. The Bilgic-HT System prevents thse changes frm happening, allwing the heat t kill viruses with few ill side effects.
The new heat treatment cannt be cnsidered a cure fr Aids, says president f the cmpany that makes the system. He says the treatment desn’t kill all traces f the virus. Hwever, it kills enugh virus particles t give a patient’s immune system a reprieve in its deadly duel with HIV.
Tests f the Bilgic-HT treatment began n 36 patients earlier this year. The treatment takes abut fur hurs, and the patient nrmally feels well enugh t leave the hspital r clinic the fllwing mrning.
S far, the patients wh have had the treatment say they feel better and have develped n new pprtunistic infectins—disease that strike peple with damaged immune systems.
