British scientists say they have slved a mystery invlving Stnehenge, the wrld-famus stne mnument in Wiltshire, England. The scientists reprted this week that they have identified where many f Stnehenge’s large stnes, called megaliths, came frm. Thusands f years ag, peple used such stnes t erect markers, mnuments and ther structures.
The researchers said part f ne megalith helped slve the mystery. The small piece f stne had been kept in the US fr ver 40 years. Chemical testing suggests that mst f Stnehenge’s megaliths, knwn as sarsens, came frm an area called West Wds, 25 kilmetres away frm the ancient mnument, the researchers said. Peple set up the sarsens at Stnehenge 4,000 years ag. The largest sarsen is 9.1 metres tall. The heaviest weighs 30 tns.
David Nash f the University f Brightn led the study, which was published in the jurnal Science Advances. He said that researchers still d nt knw hw peple mved the stnes t Stnehenge.
“Given the size f the stnes, they must have either been dragged r mved n rllers,” Nash added, “We dn’t knw the exact rute but at least we nw have a starting pint and an endpint.” Stnehenge als has smaller stnes, called bluestnes. Experts believe these stnes came frm Pembrkeshire in Wales, 250 kilmetres away. A sarsen cre sample, taken during repair wrk in the late 1950s, gave imprtant infrmatin abut Stnehenge’s rigins.
The cre sample was given t a man named Rbert Phillips. Phillips wrked fr the cmpany that was repairing the mnument. Phillips tk the sample with permissin when he mved t the US in 1977. Phillips returned it t Britain fr research in 2018. He died in 2024. The researchers studied very small pieces f the sample t find where it came frm. It was similar t sandstne fund at West Wds and all but tw f the Stnehenge sarsens. Nash hpes the finding will help peple better understand the hard wrk that went int building Stnehenge.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “erect” in Paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Cut.
      B. Build.
      C. Adjust.
      D. Crash.
      29. What can we learn abut the sarsen cre sample?
      A. Rbert Phillips tk it t the US withut permissin.
      B. It was taken when repairing Stnehenge in the 1950s.
      C. It was studied nly after Phillips died in 2024.
      D. It was ttally different frm West Wds’ sandstne.
      30. Why des Nash value the new finding?
      A. It prves bluestnes are frm Wales.
      B. It shws an easy way t test stne rigins.
      C. It helps find the exact mving rute f sarsens.
      D. It lets peple knw mre abut building Stnehenge.
      31. What is the main idea f the text?
      A. Hw sarsens f Stnehenge were mved.
      B. What resulted in the changes f Stnehenge.
      C. A cre sample was kept in the US fr ver 40 years.
      D. Scientists fund megaliths’ rigin f Stnehenge.
      D
Scientists say they have identified a chemical released by lcusts(蝗虫) that causes the insects t jin in huge grups. On their wn, lcusts are mstly harmless. Hwever, when gathering, they can becme highly destructive. The new finding culd lead t new methds t prevent lcusts frm jining t destry huge areas f crps.
A recent study in Nature identifies a phermne(信息素) believed t cause the insect’s swarming(聚集的) behaviur. A phermne is a chemical prduced by an animal that influences anther animal f the same kind. The phermne, 4VA, was fund in the wrld’s mst widespread lcust, the migratry lcust. It is released frm the insect’s back legs and sensed by ther lcusts’ antennae(触须). The phermne pwerfully drew lcusts f bth sexes and all ages, and was prduced when just fur t five lcusts came tgether. Migratry lcusts all live in Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. They attack crps, and such invasins(入侵) can cause majr fd shrtages.
Lead researcher Le Kang is with the Chinese Academy f Sciences’ Institute f Zlgy. Kang said further research is needed t see if 4VA exists in ther species, like the desert lcust, which is currently destrying crps in Africa and the Middle East.
Chemicals cmmnly used t break up lcust swarms raise human health and safety cncerns. Identifying 4VA culd lead t new cntrl methds. Kang said a chemical culd blck 4VA’s effects t prevent swarming. A manmade 4VA might als attract lcusts int traps t be killed. Lcusts culd als get genetic changes t nt react t 4VA, Kang added. Such lcusts culd be released t build wild nn-swarming ppulatins.
Leslie Vsshall, head f Rckefeller University’s Labratry, said ne f the mst exciting develpments wuld be finding a chemical that culd blck the receptin f 4VA. Vsshall nted there are still several unknwns abut the research. These include whether 4VA is the nly cause f swarm frmatin, and whether ther lcust species respnd similarly t the cmpund.
      32. What can we infer abut lcust swarming?
      A. It starts when a single lcust releases 4VA.
      B. It nly happens t migratry lcusts in Asia.
      C. It makes lcusts mre destructive than when alne.
      D. It can be stpped by existing chemicals easily.
      33. What is a pssible new apprach t cntrlling lcusts?
      A. Using 4VA t make lcusts attack each ther.
      B. Cutting lcusts’ back legs t stp 4VA release.
      C. Blcking 4VA’s effects t stp swarming.
      D. Changing genes t stp prducing 4VA.
      34. What des Leslie Vsshall believe?
      A. Finding blckers fr 4VA wuld be exciting.
      B. The research has slved all lcust swarm prblems.
      C. 4VA is definitely the nly swarm cause.
      D. N unknwns are left in the research.
      35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. Harmful Lcusts Acrss the Wrld
      B. Risks f Chemicals fr Lcusts
      C. Ways t Kill Migratry Lcusts
      D. 4VA: Key Chemical fr Lcust Swarming

      Greening the Taklimakan Desert
The Taklimakan is China’s biggest desert. It cvers 337,600 square kilmetres and was nce called the “Sea f Death”. It is very dry—nly abut 50 mm f rain falls each year, while much mre water dries up. 36____

38____ They laid straw(稻草) in squares n the sand. This held the sand dwn, s it wuldn’t blw away. They als planted tugh plants like tamarisks(柽柳) and pplars(杨树). These plants can live with little water. Their rts grw deep, which helps keep the sand in place.
After years f wrk, great prgress has been made. By Nvember 2024, a green belt was finished. It ges arund the desert. It is 3,046 kilmetres lng. That is the lngest f its kind in the wrld. 39____ This green belt has significantly reduced the frequency and intensity f sandstrms. It has als imprved the lcal climate, making the air fresher and creating a mre cmfrtable living envirnment.
The success helps lcal peple a lt. It gives them a safer, nicer place t live. 40____ It shws that with effrt and clever ideas, even dry deserts can be turned green. This teaches us that humans can wrk with nature t make big changes, ne small step at a time.
