      Sir,
The majrity f yur readers must have been surprised and shcked t read a letter frm Mr R. Hgg, published in last Wednesday’s Herald. Mr. Hgg seems t think that his wn cnvenience and that f mtrists in general are the nly things that matter in ur city.
I wuld have mre sympathy(同情)with Mr Hgg if he just made suggestins t imprve the situatin. N dubt his prblems wuld be partly slved if the lcal gvernment built a multi-strey car park in the city center, instead f encuraging mtrists t use public transprt. All the same, judging frm the tne f Mr Hgg’s letter, I suspect that mtrists wh are s careless f pedestrians’(行人)safety that they wuld rather park their cars n the pavement than hld up the traffic wuld prbably be t lazy t use a multi-strey car park if they had t walk a few hundred yards t their destinatin(目的地)afterwards.
My main reasn fr writing, hwever, is much mre imprtant. Des Mr Hgg realize that, accrding t figures issued by the Department f Transprt, 13,000 peple were kncked dwn in Britain last year because f cars being illegally parked either n the pavement r n crssings? In fact, althugh the ttal pedestrian casualty(伤亡事故)rate has fallen ver the last ten years, there has been an increase in accidents caused when pedestrians have t step ut int the rad t avid parked cars n the pavement and cannt see ncming traffic.
I cannt share Mr Hgg’s view that the gvernment have paid little attentin t “lng-suffering mtrists”; and I think the punishment fr dangerus parking shuld be made severe enugh t stp all mtrists frm breaking the law in this way.

64.What Mr. A. Walker des want t make knwn in his letter is that .
A.the ttal pedestrian casualty rate has fallen
