A new study by scientists at MIT fund that rice seeds (种子) can “hear” the sund f raindrps and use the infrmatin t “decide” when t grw. It’s nt cmpletely new. Earlier studies have already shwn sme plants culd respnd t (反应) the envirnment. They can sense the sunds when caterpillars eat leaves, and when bees fly past. The new study shws that plants are even smarter than we thught.
T make sure the seeds respnd t sund instead f water, scientists did a test. They chse t fcus n rice seeds because rice is usually planted in water. Thusands f rice seeds were put in water. By this way, all f the seeds culd get enugh water t grw. Sme stayed in quiet water, while thers sensed man-made raindrps.
The result was surprising. The seeds that “hear” raindrp sunds grew 30 t 40 percent faster than the nes in quiet water. This faster grwth helps seeds live better in nature. Scientists als fund ut why this happens. Falling raindrps create clear vibratins in the water. Inside rice seeds, there are tiny parts called statliths keeping balance. These parts mve quickly when they feel the vibratins, which tells the seeds t start grwing earlier.
The scientists believe that sensing rain sunds may help seeds make sure they’re in a gd place t grw. They think this special ability is nt just fr rice.
