13、Harmful micrbes (微生物) like bacteria (细菌), viruses (病毒) and ther germs (病菌) are pathgens (病原体). They may enter yur bdies and make yu ill. The immune system (免疫系统) is the bdy’s defence (防卫) system that prtects yu frm illness and disease caused by the pathgens.
The immune system is made up f nn-specialized defences such as skin, tears and the acidic juice prduced by the stmach, keeping yu frm the pathgens. It als has sme highly specialized defences, which are different kinds f immune cells (细胞), gruped int phagcytes (噬菌细胞) and lymphcytes (淋巴细胞). Phagcytes are a type f white bld cell. They are swimming arund in yur bld stream, always n the lkut fr antigens (抗原) —the pathgens that have entered yur bdies. Whenever they see ne, they will eat it. Hwever, sme antigens are hard t find and kill. Then lymphcytes, which are als white bld cells and the main types are B cells, T helper cells and T killer cells, will be the killers f the sneaky antigens. B cells, T helper and T killer cells wrk tgether t find and kill these antigens. B cells prduce substances, called antibdies, which stick t the antigen. When that happens, it will tell the T helper cells t cme ver and either: 1. help the B cells kill the antigen, r 2. call the phagcytes r T killer cells t mve in fr the kill. Once a B cell r a T cell attacks an antigen, they create cells t “remember” it. Thse “memry cells” hang ut in yur bld and if they see the same antigen again, they quickly recgnize (识别) it s yur immune system can act faster at killing it.
The immune system is mre pwerful than yu prbably imagine. Scientists frm the University f Pennsylvania recently tk immune cells frm three patients with leukemia (白血病), then genetically changed them int “serial killer” cells t attack cancer cells. The study was small but the results were grund-breaking. The mdified immune cells increased at least 1,000 times in the bdy and killed all the cancer cells. Therefre, mre “memry cells” were created.
The immune system can be develped. Eating lean prtein fd (beef, beans) and fd rich in vitamins A, C and E (sweet ptates, carrts),taking a 30-minute walk every day and reducing yur stress levels, will help yu achieve it.
