14、 Qian Xuesen was brn in Hangzhu, Zhejiang Prvince n December 11, 1911. He left Hangzhu at the age f three when his father btained a pst in Beijing. He graduated frm the High Schl Affiliated t Beijing Nrmal University and attended Shanghai Jiatng University. There, he received a degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis n railrad administratin.
After his graduatin frm Shanghai Jiatng University in 1934, he travelled acrss the Pacific Ocean t the United States fr further study. There he received his Ph. D.degrees in bth aerspace and mathematics. After he graduated, he became a prfessr as well as a researcher wh studied rckets and missile theries.
In 1949, when the news f the birth f the Peple’s Republic f China came t the United States, Qian Xuesen and his wife decided t return t China. In 1950, when they were ready t return hme, they were stpped by US fficials and sent t prisn. With the help f Chinese gvernment and his friends, he finally returned hme.
When he returned t China in 1955, ur cuntry’s space research was almst a blank. In 1956, he set up the first research institute f rckets and missiles.
