The UK’s first gethermal (地热) pwer statin has recently started perating in Crnwall, England.
Gethermal Engineering Ltd (GEL), the cmpany that runs the pwer statin, says it, as a frm f renewable
energy, will prvide pwer fr up t 10,000 hmes.
Gethermal energy cmes frm heat trapped deep under the Earth’s surface. T reach this heat, GEL had t
drill the deepest well in the UK. The prject tk nearly 20 years t prepare and cst abut £50 millin.
The statin wrks by sending water three miles dwn int the well, where the temperature is abut 200℃. As
the water travels thrugh these ht rcks, it picks up heat and is then pumped back t the surface. The heated water,
nw at arund 190℃, creates strng steam pressure. This steam is used t turn big wheels called turbines, which
prduce electricity. After that, the water is cled and sent back undergrund t start again. The electricity is sld
t Octpus Energy, which will use it t pwer hmes.
Besides electricity, the statin als prduces lithium (锂) , a valuable metal used t make batteries. GEL says
第 5页/共 17页
the lithium can be taken frm the water withut creating carbn dixide — a gas that causes climate change when
there is t much f it in the air. The statin is the UK’s first big prducer f lithium. At first, it will prduce abut
100 tnnes f lithium each year. GEL plans t slwly increase this t 18,000 tnnes a year, which wuld be enugh
t make 250, 000 electric car batteries.
Ryan Law, GEL’s funder, says the statin is imprtant fr the UK’s energy supply. “Unlike wind and slar,
we are n all the time — 24/7 electricity,” he said. He als nted that the cst f prducing electricity frm
gethermal energy stays the same, unlike gas and il prices, which can g up and dwn. GEL has plans fr mre
gethermal statins in Crnwall and is waiting fr the gvernment’s green light fr tw new sites.
