What des it mean t live a gd life? This questin has been debated fr centuries. In the field f psychlgy, tw main cncepts f the gd life have been quite ppular: A happy life full f pleasure and psitive emtins, and a meaningful life full f purpse and sacrifice. But what if these aren't the nly ptins?
In recent years, a lng-neglected versin f the gd life has been receiving greater attentin: the psychlgically rich life. It is full f cmplex mental engagement, a wide range f intense and deep emtins, and diverse, nvel, surprising and interesting experiences. Smetimes they are neither pleasant nr meaningful. Hwever, they are rarely bring r mntnus.
After all, bth happy and meaningful lives can becme mntnus and repetitive. A persn with a steady ffice jb, married with children, may be satisfied and find his r her life meaningful and still be bred. Als, the psychlgically rich life desn't necessarily invlve ecnmic richness. Fr instance, cnsider Hesse's character Gldmund, wh has n mney but pursues the life f a free spirit.
Research has fund psychlgical richness is related t, but partially distinct frm, bth happy and meaningful lives. Psychlgical richness is related with penness t experience and experiencing bth psitive and negative emtins mre intensely. But is the psychlgically rich life ne that peple actually want?
In a new study, Oishi and his clleagues asked peple in nine cuntries the degree t which they value a psychlgically rich life, a happy life and a meaningful life. They fund many peple's self-described ideal lives invlve psychlgical richness. When frced t chse a life, hwever, the majrity chse a happy life and a meaningful life. Even s, a minrity f peple still favred the psychlgically rich life, ranging frm 6.7% in Singapre t 16.8% in Germany.
These numbers went up when the desire fr a psychlgically rich life was measured indirectly. T understand what a persn wishes their lives might have been, it is imprtant t explre what peple wish they had avided in their lives. When asked what they regret mst and whether unding this event wuld have made their lives happier, mre meaningful r psychlgically richer, abut 28% f Americans said unding the regrettable event wuld have made their lives psychlgically richer.
These findings suggest that while mst peple strive t be happy and have meaning in their lives, a sizable number f peple are cntent merely living a psychlgically rich existence.
As Oishi and his clleagues cnclude, "We believe that taking the psychlgically rich life seriusly will deepen and enrich ur understanding f well-being." At the end f the day, there is n ne singularly acceptable path t the gd life. Yu have t find a path that wrks best fr yu.

Tw f the wrld’s mst cmmn species f reef-building crals seem surprisingly able t survive and even cpe well with climate change, accrding t a new study—at least s lng as glbal warming is kept belw 2 degrees Celsius, the target set by the Paris Agreement.
The wrld has s far warmed by 1.1°C. The Great Barrier Reef, the wrld’s largest reef system, is currently in “crisis,” a recently published UN reprt said. That reprt warned that sme cral reef ecsystems culd face irreversible damage if the wrld warms mre than 1.5°C. A 2018 reprt by the IPCC cncluded that at 2ºC r mre, 99 percent f all reef-building crals culd be lst.
But that’s nt what McLachlan and her clleagues bserved when they subjected Hawaiian crals t a simulated (模拟) 2ºC wrld fr nearly tw years. They fund that tw cmmn cral species were especially resilient (能复原的) : Tw-thirds f thse crals survived the simulated future.
T learn mre abut hw bth warming and acidificatin might threat reefs in the future, they cllected samples f three cmmn cral species and placed them in tanks where they wuld be expsed t the same weather as a reef just ffshre. They filled a ttal f 40 tanks with sand, rubble, reef fish, planktn, and ther reef features. The idea was t simulate cean cnditins as realistically as pssible.
Fr 22 mnths, the researchers subjected sme crals t 2ºC f warming, sme t acidified water, and sme t bth changes. Overall, f the crals expsed t bth cnditins, 46 percent f rice cral, 56 percent f lbe cral, and 71 percent f finger cral survived. Many f the crals were even thriving.
“The paper supprts what has been bserved in Hawaii.” says Ku’ulei Rdgers, a cral expert at the University f Hawaii at Manōa. “Hwever, althugh it is hpeful that sme species will survive this century, unless significant reductins in emissins ccur, crals will eventually lse their fight fr survival.”
8.What can we knw frm the passage?
A. It seems sme crals can adapt t a warmer wrld withut limits.
B. The Great Barrier Reef will be lst as the wrld has warmed by 1.1°.
C. Tw kinds f reef-building crals seem able t survive be free f glbal warming.
D. Living cral reefs wuld disappear frm the planet if the wrld warms 2ºC r mre.
9.Why McLachlan and her clleagues did the study?
A. T cllect samples f three cmmn cral species.
B. T simulate cean cnditins as realistically as pssible.
C. T figure ut hw bth warming and acidificatin might damage reefs.
D. T warn that reef ecsystems culd face significant damage fr glbal warming.
10.What des the last paragraph imply?
A. Ku’ulei Rdgers speaks highly f the paper.
B. It’s hpeful that crals will survive in the future.
C. Crals will eventually lse their fight fr survival.
D. Humans shuld spare n effrt t reduce emissins.
11.Hw did the researchers d the research?
A. By sampling and discussing.B. By cntrasting and bserving.
C. By assuming and cntrasting.D. By bserving and discussing.

Wuld yu turn dwn the chance t becme a smart ckie? We've been lnging fr quick fixes that culd increase ur intelligence (智力). Tday, peple's hpes lie in brain training apps as a speedy "digital pill". The mre yu play, the smarter yu will get—r s sme apps tell us. But is this digital-shrtcut all that it seems t be?
The use f games fr serius purpses has becme widespread with the develpment f the Internet and smartphnes. Brain training apps are typical, frequently featured by Apple and Ggle's app stres. Many f such apps say that they are backed by "science". Even if there were agreement arund what makes general intelligence, the idea that increasing it wuld be as simple as practising a few mini-games every day ges against ur current discvery abut thinking and learning.
Several majr studies, surveying users acrss a wide variety f apps, have fund that they have little t n effect n users' perfrmance. A 2021 study by researchers discvered brain training has n significant effect n cgnitive (认知的) functining in the "real wrld". The psitive effects reprted are limited t the very specific mini-games and tasks, such as memrizing lists f wrds r numbers, r perfrming mental calculatin (心算). S, if yur jb r yur calling in life needs summing quickly r remembering all yur friends' phne numbers, these apps will d. But if yu are expecting them t imprve yur ability t write a nvel r frm a cmplex (复杂的) spreadsheet, yu have t lk elsewhere. Yet, despite the fact that they hardly wrk, brain training apps play a leading rle, partly because they are regarded t be scientific and partly because users think they are fun.
As a c-creatr f ne f the mst ppular frms f gamificatin (游戏化) nted, what is especially disappinting abut these apps is that they just aren't that fun—at least, nt cmpared with the varius thughtful bard games and vide games cming ut every day. Puzzle vide games, such as Baba Is Yu and detective games like Return f the Obra Dinn, see players apply their skill at reasning, memry and cncentratin in a far mre challenging and engaging (吸引人的) way.
If yu aren't int games, simply g fr a walk r learn hw t dance. They are likely t be mre effective than a brain training app in sharpening yur mind. These activities might nt lead t an increased IQ, but they are sure t engage yur brain deeply while having fun—smething I can by n means say f brain training apps.
12.Which f the fllwing wuld the authr prbably agree with?
A. Brain training apps are backed by science.
B. Creativity can be imprved with brain training apps.
C. Gamificatin has little t d with increasing intelligence.
D. Increasing IQ is as simple as practising a few mini-games every day.
13.Accrding t the passage, brain training apps are still ppular because ______.
A. they turn mental exercises int quick games
B. they are cnsidered bth scientific and interesting
C. they are mre effective in shaping ur minds than ther games
D. they have significant effects n the cgnitive functining in the "real wrld"
14.Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. A Smart Ckie r Nt?B. There's N App fr That.
C. What will Games Lead Us t?D. A Digital Pill fr Intelligence.

Pr Sleep and Lneliness: A Vicius Cycle?
The feeling f being lnely is the sense that yu have less scial cntact with thers than yu want. It is nt quite the same as the amunt f scial cntact yu have. Sme peple dn't engage that ften with thers, but they are perfectly fine with that, and s they dn't feel alne. (15) Being lnely is assciated with prer psychlgical health.
One area f research has fcused specifically n the relatinship between lneliness and sleep. There are several inter-related questins: Is feeling lnely related t the quality f peple's sleep? What aspects f sleep are related t lneliness? And des lneliness cause sleep prblems, r d difficulties with sleeping lead t feelings f lneliness? (16)
The relatinship between lneliness and sleep was explred in a paper by Melanie Hm and Cal Chu in the September 2020 issue f Clinical Psychlgical Science. They analyzed the data f previus studies relating sleep quality t feelings f lneliness. (17) This relatinship is strnger fr insmnia(失眠症)than fr sleep cmplaints like nightmares. In additin, the mre lneliness peple express, the less effective they think their sleep is.
Althugh pr sleep and lneliness are clsely related, it is hard t determine whether lneliness causes sleep difficulties r the reverse(相反).
(18) It is because yu can lk t see whether sleep difficulties at ne time predict later feelings f lneliness r whether lneliness early n predicts later sleep difficulties. Interestingly, sleep prblems predicted later lneliness and lneliness predicted later sleep difficulties. Hwever, the cnnectin between earlier sleep difficulties and later lneliness was generally strnger than that between earlier lneliness and later sleep difficulties. This pattern suggests that there may be a vicius cycle, thugh, in which pr sleep can increase feelings f lneliness, which can in turn increase sleep difficulties.
If yu are smene wh has truble sleeping, be aware that pr sleep lwers yur resilience(复原力)verall. Amng ther things, it may make it harder fr yu t appreciate the scial cntacts yu have. (19) That added scial engagement just might have a psitive impact n yur future sleep.
A. Lng-term studies that fllw the same peple ver time help.
B. If yu have difficulty in scial engagement, yu may feel lnely.
C. Other peple may spend a lt f time with thers, but still lng fr mre.
D. These issues are imprtant because pr sleep can affect psychlgical health.
E. T slve the prblem, yu shuld mnitr yur sleeping quality and physical health.
F. If yu have truble sleeping, try spending mre time reaching ut t friends and lved nes.
G. The results indicate that the mre sleep difficulties peple express they have, the lnelier they feel.
