The air smelled f damp earth and pesticide, a sharp cntrast t the clean, digital scent f my city life. I cunted dwn the days until my escape, the quiet cuntryside feeling nt peaceful, but empty and slw.
The change began with the arrival f a yung agricultural scientist, Miss Li, frm the cunty’s new “Rural Revitalizatin” prject. She brught nt just new rganic fertilizers, but a tablet full f clrful sil analysis charts. My grandfather listened with plite skepticism, dubting its effectiveness. I was surprised t find myself inspired. I began translating the technical terms n the tablet int ur lcal dialect fr grandpa, and explaining his decades f wisdm t Miss Li. A tiny spark (火花) f curisity lit up where there was nce nly dullness.
One afternn, a sudden hailstrm threatened the ripening grapes. Panic seized me — nt fr myself, but fr the vines we had grwn. Miss Li shwed us satellite weather tracking n her phne, predicting the strm’s path. Fr the first time, I didn’t see technlgy as an enemy f this place, but as its friends. A fierce sense f prtectin, mixed with a new-fund awe, warmed me frm within. I was n lnger just an bserver; I gt invlved.
The autumn harvest was a success f this unlikely partnership. Grandfather placed a heavy hand n my shulder. “This harvest,” he said, his vice thick with emtin, “has yur mark n it.” A prfund pride, deep and slid, settled in my chest. I finally understd that my grwth wasn’t abut escaping this land, but abut enriching it. The vineyard was n lnger my chain; it had becme my canvas. In helping t revive its rts, I had discvered my wn.

Step inside mst mdern cars and instead f all the dials and switches yu are likely t find a tuchscreen. But, thugh tuchscreens prvide a cnvenient way t perate a lt f cntrls and settings, the latest research shws they can als make drivers less cncentrated.
T discver hw badly tuchscreens distract drivers, Neale Kinnear and his clleagues at the Transprt Research Labratry arranged a series f experiments. They had tw grups f 20 drivers. One cnsisted f regular users f Ggle’s Andrid Aut, a ppular app which lets drivers interact with their phne thrugh a car’s tuchscreen. The thers were supprters f Andrid Aut’s main cmpetitr, Apple Car Play.
Each participant cmpleted three 15-minute jurneys alng a set virtual rute using the labratry’s driving simulatr (模拟装置). On ne f these trips they had t carry ut tasks using nly the tuchscreen. These tasks included navigating t a restaurant, playing a particular sng, changing radi channels, and making a “hands-free” telephne call. On the secnd trip they had t d the same, but using nly the car’s vice-activated cntrls instead. The third jurney was a cntrl, with n assigned tasks.
Whenever a red bar flashed n the windscreen the researchers measured hw lng it tk a driver t react by pulling the indicatr stick t flash the car’s lights. As they expected, drivers using tuch cntrls n the screen tk lnger t respnd t the flashing bar than thse using vice cntrls. Thugh the difference might be less than a secnd, at mtrway speeds this wuld result in an increased stpping distance f up t 25 metres.
Dr Kinnear was, hwever, surprised by the amunt f time drivers’ attentin was distracted by the series f glances needed t perate the screen. Amng the wrst utcmes were a mean f 20 secnds f cumulative glances using Andrid Aut t play a sng, and f 16 secnds t set up the rute t a restaurant with Car Play. Fr vice cmmands thse means fell t 4 and 3 secnds respectively.
The researchers believe vice-activatin is a safer alternative, but the sftware is expected t take less time t respnd. Andy Peart f Artificial Slutins, a Swedish firm develping AI-assisted vice recgnitin, agrees.
      8. Hw was the research carried ut?
      A. By analyzing figures.B. By cnducting questinnaires.
      C. By cnsulting previus studies.D. By gruping experiment subjects.
      9. What did the participants d during the secnd trip?
      A. They drve n a real rad.B. They received randm tasks.
      C. They used nly the tuchscreen.D. They gave their cars vice cmmands.
      10. Which f the fllwing shcked Dr. Kinnear?
      A. Flashing bars were difficult t ntice.
      B. Using tuchscreens was time-cnsuming.
      C. Pulling the indicatr stick required effrt.
      D. Driving speeds were very different n mtrways.
      11. What is Andy Peart’s pinin f the vice-activatin app?
      A. It needs t be imprved.B. It prves t be perfect.
      C. It can never be replaced.D. It’s nrmally impractical.

The rule, which was ppularized in Malclm Gladwell’s 2008 bk Outliers, is based n a 1993 study f tp-perfrming vilin students. These students had each accumulated an average f 10,000 hurs f practice by age 20. Yet they were nt wrld-class perfrmers, Macnamara pints ut.
“Cmpared with their natinal-class fellws wh are very gd but nt the best, wrld-class perfrmers ften started their field later,” Macnamara explains. These peple tend t take part in multiple activities early n and dn’t shine in ne thing at a particularly yung age. “They accumulate less practice in their field and mre practice in ther fields and then rise t the tp relatively late,” she says.
The researchers highlight that the findings aren’t suggesting peple dn’t need t practice r put in effrt t becme the cream f the crp. Instead they shw that tp adult perfrmers tend t be “late blmers”, Macnamara says.
Bstn University researcher Edsn Filh, uninvlved in the study, ntes that athletes in certain sprts, such as gymnastics, hit peak perfrmance far earlier in life than thers. And this analysis, he adds, desn’t get int ther factrs such as mney and caching that can influence wh becmes the cream f the crp.
      12. What d we knw abut the recent research?
      A. It crrespnds with what is widely believed.
      B. It explres the length f becming an expert.
      C. It highlights the natural talent in later success.
      D. It shws yung talents seldm becme tp-ranked.
      13. What sets wrld-class perfrmers apart frm natinal-class nes?
      A. Early entry t a certain field.B. Frmer crss-field experience.
      C. Enugh practice accumulatin.D. Signs f childhd excellence.
      14. What des the underlined wrds “the cream f the crp” in paragraph 5 mean?
      A. A persn f green diet.
      B. A persn f average level.
      C. A persn f utstanding ability.
      D. A persn f self-taught experience.
      15. What is Edsn Filh’s attitude twards the research findings?

My brther Jack was s smart that he earned a full schlarship t Harvard. I ften wished he wasn’t s perfect because it made me feel like I had t wrk twice as hard just t prve myself t thers. On the ne hand, his success was a challenge that I enjyed, but n the ther hand, it was a huge amunt f pressure that I struggled t cpe with.
T balance his recrd in high schl, I felt like I was cnstantly running n a treadmill (跑步机), devting every mment t a nn-stp race. There was n rm fr relaxatin as I pursued that perfect recrd. My life seemed t be cmpressed int a series f endless tasks and deadlines. “I needed an A,” I repeated t myself befre the bilgy test, s that I wuld maintain my perfect recrd and secure a place n the hnr rll. I studied till the last minute f lunch and rushed t class. I felt a sense f cnfidence as I glanced ver the first page f the test, quickly filling in the answers with a smile. Hwever, as I turned t the last page, my mind went blank. Time ticked by, and sn, the classrm began t empty as students finished their tests and left, except me. “Lara, class ended. I need yu t hand in yur test,” Mrs. Phlem said, stretching ut her hand. Unwillingly, I handed her the test paper.
The next day, I received my test back. I stared at the red mark in shck: 76. Nt even a B minus, my mind screamed. Just average. It’s ver. N perfect recrd. I felt an unprecedented (前所未有的) sense f frustratin and disappintment. After schl, I dragged my heavy feet back hme. When I pushed pen the dr, Jack was sitting n the cuch, reading. Seeing his leisurely state, I cried, hard t cntain the jealusy (妒忌) and sadness in my heart. Jack immediately nticed the depressin n my face. He asked with cncern, “What’s wrng, Lara?” Blinded by frustratin mixed with a tuch f jealusy, I shuted at him, “Hw I wish yu were nt s perfect!”

      【答案】范文
With a tuch f hurt and surprise in his eyes, Jack gently apprached me. He placed a hand n my shulder, and asked me again what had happened. I tk ut my test paper and tld him that I wuld never match up t him in a chked vice. Jack’s smile grew warmer, and he gave my shulder a reassuring squeeze. “Yu dn’t have t measure up t anyne and yur wrth isn’t defined by grades r achievements. Yu’re mre than just a number n a test. Remember t be yurself.”
His wrds blew my depressin away and changed my mindset. I was still engaged in endless tasks and deadlines, but I n lnger felt fenced in by my brther’s shadw. Realizing that cmparisn is the thief f jy, I strve fr excellence instead f perfectin, which is ften unattainable and can lead t burnut. I felt a weight lifted ff my shulders as I realized that my value wasn’t tied t a single test scre. I felt mre cnfident and less verwhelmed as I knw that believing in ding my best will always be the ultimate best scre.
