Ruth Minhall’s pathway int educatin was untraditinal. Owing t her ADHD (多动症) and difficulty in
reading and spelling, she was frequently misunderstd and underestimated. Teachers criticized her unusual way f
thinking, and her cnfidence as a student decreased. Hwever, Ruth didn’t give up. Instead, she develped
strategies t succeed, such as reading her wrk alud t imprve grammar and flw, which cntributed t her exam
success.
These experiences cnvinced her that barriers can becme stepping stnes t grwth. That belief cntinues t
guide her leadership tday and inspires the philsphy behind Tuitin Extra: learning shuld be adaptable,
slutin-fcused, and centered n individual strengths.
As an adult, Ruth nce wrked internatinally as a singer and recrding artist, pursued jurnalism, and finally
became a teacher at Brden Grammar Schl in Sittingburne. Just in the classrm, she discvered her ability t
cnnect with students at risk f exclusin (排斥).
Althugh Ruth enjyed teaching, she realized that traditinal rutes within educatin weren’t ecnmically
sustainable fr her as a single mther. S she created a part-time tutring business that wuld later grw int
Tuitin Extra Grup. Rapidly, parents and schls recgnized Ruth’s unique slutin-fcused apprach, which
priritized addressing unmet needs rather than punishing trubled behavirs. The impact wasn’t limited t
academic achievement. Students als gained cnfidence and a renewed sense f belnging.
In 2013, Ruth decided t devte herself fully t the business. Tday, Tuitin Extra is a dynamic rganizatin
cmbining educatin with vcatinal (职业的) pprtunities. It supprts children and yung adults aged 4-25 wh
might therwise struggle t succeed in mainstream educatin.
Fr Ruth, leadership is abut taking respnsibility and cntinuusly learning. She describes failure nt as
weakness but as grwth. Students, staff, and leaders alike are encuraged t see mistakes as pprtunities fr
learning. Her rganizatin stands as prf that every child, regardless f their challenges, has the ptential t
succeed when educated with lve and creativity.
24. What can be inferred abut Ruth’s early schl years?
A. They were shaped by a variety f challenges. B. They were filled with regular celebratins.
C. They prevented her identifying her later path. D. They expsed her t an inspiring campus culture.
25. What is implied abut Ruth in paragraph 3?
A. Her philsphy kept develping. B. Her talent fr art was recgnized.
C. Her career was equally diverse. D. Her devtin t educatin was tuching.
26. What mainly mtivated Ruth t start her tutring business?
A. Requests frm numerus parents. B. Her financial needs and persnal insight.
C. Her ambitin t transfrm educatin. D. Encuragement frm schl leaders.
27. What is prbably Ruth’s teaching philsphy?
A. One-size-fits-all teaching shuld be priritized.
B. Cmmunity-driven appraches bring fast success.
C. Tailred educatin is abut fitting in.
D. All children deserve the pprtunity t grw.

Waiting fr a bus n a ht day can feel exhausting and stressful, especially in cities where rads and buildings
trap heat. Many peple think cmfrt depends nly n air temperature r shade, but new research frm the
University f British Clumbia reveals that a bus stp that feels pleasant t lk at can make heat feel easier t
handle, even when temperatures stay high.
The researchers studied 60 bus stps with different surrundings, such as varying tree cver, buildings, and
paved surfaces acrss Denver, Clrad, a city experiencing frequent summer heat, measuring air temperature,
radiant heat, humidity (湿度), and wind near waiting areas. While waiting fr buses, transit (公共交通) users
answered the researchers’ questins regarding hw ht and cmfrtable they felt and hw pleasant the
surrundings appeared.
Having analyzed the data they cllected, the scientists fund that peple waiting at bus stps rated as visually
pleasant ften felt mre cmfrtable, even when heat stress remained high. “Our findings indicate that hw peple
view a space — its penness, greenery and verall lk — can meaningfully influence hw cmfrtable they
feel, particularly under extreme heat,” said lead authr Lgan Steinharter.
Pleasant views can reduce mental stress, which lwers discmfrt signals sent t the bdy, and as a result,
while heat still exists, the feeling is less intense, accrding t the researchers. Trees and vegetatin were especially
effective in bsting visual appeal, sftening hard urban surfaces and prmting calm. Senir authr Dr. Melissa
McHale nted, “Design chices matter. The way infrastructure (基础设施) lks and feels can influence peple’s
experience f heat, even when physical expsure remains high.”
As many residents rely n buses, imprving cmfrt at bus stps supprts health, safety and access. While
green infrastructure desn’t replace the need t reduce heat expsure, it plays a meaningful rle in shaping daily
experiences. “If we want climate-resilient and peple-centred transit systems,” Dr. McHale added, “we need t
think beynd bare-bnes infrastructure and take int accunt peple’s need t wait fr transit.” Thughtful design,
visual quality, and greenery can make extreme heat mre bearable as cities cntinue t warm.
28. Hw did the researchers cnduct the study?
A. By cmparing different cities. B. By linking heat data and persnal respnses.
C. By measuring indr humidity. D. By centering n recrding the temperatures.
29. Why can pleasant views make heat feel less intense accrding t the study?
A. They supprt emtinal calm. B. They increase wind flw.
C. They change actual temperature. D. They take in mre sunlight.
30. What is Dr. Melissa McHale’s suggestin fr future transit systems?
A. Keeping paying attentin t reducing heat. B. Using cheaper building materials.
C. Cnsidering the full waiting experience. D. Building mre enclsed bus shelters.
31. Which is the best title fr the text?
A. New Bus Stps Can Cl Cities B. Heat Waves Reduce Transit Use
C. Peple Beat the Heat with Shade D. Greenery Eases the Heat Feeling

Fr decades, high grades, early medals, r strng test scres are ften seen as signs f future greatness. Talent
prgrams frequently select tp-perfrming children and push them int intensive, single-discipline training frm a
yung age. Hwever, this apprach may be flawed. A team led by Arne Güllich, prfessr f University
Kaiserslautern Landau, fund these assumptins didn’t match hw mst wrld-class perfrmers actually develped.
Earlier research mainly studied yung r sub-elite (亚 精 英 ) perfrmers, such as schl students, yuth
athletes, and cnservatry musicians. What was missing was a clse lk at adults wh reached the highest level in
their fields. “Traditinal research int giftedness and expertise didn’t sufficiently cnsider hw wrld-class
perfrmers at peak perfrmance age develped in their early years,” said Güllich. Given all this, a new internatinal
research team was frmed.
The team reanalyzed data frm massive earlier studies, bringing tgether evidence frm different fields fr the
first time. In ttal, they examined the develpmental paths f 34,839 tp perfrmers. This grup included Nbel
Prize winners in science, Olympic medalists, excellent chess players, etc.
The researchers fund early success didn’t reliably predict later greatness. First, individuals wh perfrmed
best at a yung age were usually nt the same peple wh later reached the wrld-class level. Secnd, future tp
perfrmers tended t nt stand ut early, and many weren’t amng the best in their age grup. Third, thse wh
eventually reached peak perfrmance explred multiple areas early in life.
Accrding t the researchers, trying different disciplines helps individuals discver what truly fits them best
ver time, and that varied experiences build strnger learning skills, making it easier t imprve later at the highest
level. “Thse wh find an ptimal (最 适 宜 的 ) discipline fr themselves and develp enhanced ptential fr
lng-term learning have imprved chances f develping wrld-class perfrmance,” said Güllich.
“Thus, t supprt yung talent, dn’t make them specialize in just ne discipline t early,” said Güllich.
“Prvide pprtunities t pursue different areas f interest, and supprt develpment in tw r three disciplines.” A
yung persn might enjy bth mathematics and languages, r philsphy and gegraphy. Lking ahead, these
insights culd help design better appraches t talent develpment.
32. What des the underlined wrd “flawed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Cnfusing. B. Unattractive. C. Discuraging. D. Unsund.
33. What is the uniqueness f the new study cmpared t previus research?
A. The fcus n cmprehensive data. B. The massive financial investment.
C. The dependence n technlgy. D. The cperatin between cuntries.
34. What des paragraph 5 mainly talk abut?
A. Ways t chse disciplines. B. The pwer f early variety.
C. The qualities f tp perfrmers. D. The applicatins f the findings.
35. What did Güllich think was the mst imprtant abut appraches t talent develpment?
A. Creativity. B. Resistance. C. Flexibility. D. Sustainability.

A recent study surveyed ver 500 university students ver nine mnths. In the beginning, the team asked
participants abut a lng-term gal they were quitting. T assess inner drive, the team asked participants t rate
statements such as, “ 39 ” Statements like “Peple have been telling me I have t let this gal g” assessed
utside pressures t quit. With the study prgressing, the team assessed hw “stuck” a persn was. Peple wh

M: Why’re yu s tired?
W: It’s still tw weeks befre Christmas, and the stre is flded with mre and mre custmers. I’ve been n my
feet all day, serving ne after anther.
(Text 2)
M: Hi, Amy! Yu’re hme early! Did Grandad g and get yu frm the cinema?
W: Oh, Jane’s dad wrks near the cinema, s we wanted t ask him t cllect us, but then Jane’s lder brther
came past in his car and picked us up.
(Text 3)
M: I’m terribly srry, Madam, but we are fully bked this evening until 9:30 pm.
W: Lk, I’m a regular custmer. Isn’t there any chance that we culd be given a table fr tw? We just need
smething very quick befre the play starts.
(Text 4)
W: I’ve never heard f Philippa Gregry.
M: Really! She’s just written a great, new, histrical nvel and lads f her stuff is adapted fr TV.
W: I guess histrical nvels just aren’t my kind f thing.
(Text 5)
M: I can’t believe yu gt a ticket. Did yu run a red light?
W: Nt exactly. I was driving at 40 miles an hur in a schl zne. The fine is huge! It’s a lt mre than the fine fr
ging the wrng way n a ne-way street.
(Text 6)
W: Oh, lk! Yu’ve missed it!
M: Oh, typical! They’re always late if I’m early, but if I get there a few secnds late, they leave dead n time!
W: The next ne’s at five thirty. I dn’t mind hanging arund with yu. I’ll g and get tw cffees.

W: Of curse! And I’m s happy we were bth invited t help lk after the park.
M: Me, t. We’ve dne quite a lt in ur rles as vlunteers there. Our backgrund as scientists really helps ur
wrk.
W: It certainly des. I’ve enjyed getting invlved in varius prjects abut birds.
M: Yeah, I’ve als lved walking amng the trees. It’s amazing hw the newly planted nes have stpped grwing
in height, but grwn in width recently s that they spread ut their branches.
W: Yeah… But I’m wrried that turists ignre the fact that the park is a cnservatin area. There is s much
rubbish drpped everywhere. But maybe it’s because it’s a well-knwn turist attractin.
M: Mm, yu’re right. Anyway, tmrrw I’m ging t help ut with making whatever’s still needed there. It’s

M: With us here n ur pdcast is Abby. She has just wn an award fr amateur film-makers. Welcme t the shw,
Abby!
W: Thanks!
M: S what made yu enter this cntest?
W: I actually remember hearing abut it n the radi and immediately decided t try my luck. I’ve always enjyed
filming peple and even directed a schl play nce. But nthing prepared me fr what was t cme. And I guess
that is lucky because there is nthing like cmpleting a mvie.
M: What was the mst challenging part abut that?
W: I think the hardest f all was getting the crew tgether. Funding came a clse secnd. The screenplay was the
easiest as I had written ne fr schl but hadn’t used it. And my parents let me sht at ur huse s we didn’t
have t wrry abut the venue, saving us the extra cst f renting!
M: Was filming easy then?
W: Nt really. Since I had been in schl plays befre, it came naturally. It was editing that was hard!
M: Was it because f all the different tls yu needed?
W: Nt at all! The prblem was deciding which scenes t cut. Each actr gave it their all. This win is nt because
f me. It was a team effrt.
(Text 10)
