I wrestled her t the grund fr the keys, literally. Indeed, when she pened the dr t leave the huse at 11 pm fr the mvies despite my wrds, I actually wrestled my 16-year-ld daughter t the grund.
I did nt knw hw t deal with a rebellius(叛逆的) teenager. We are a family f strng wills, frm the tp dwn. All my kids had pushed and argued. Everyne "kind f" fllwed the rules. As they gt lder, especially when they hit high schl, I saw the pwer shifting, but it hadn't been s bvius. I had nt seen much in-yur-face rebellin.
Until this happened.
I called Amy Speidel, a wise and practical parenting expert. She stayed n the phne with me and listened t my wild cmplaint abut my disrespectful kid. She listened fr almst tw hurs and then gave me sme suggestins.
Amy tld me that my daughter's behavir was "develpmentally apprpriate"-she was suppsed t test the bundaries. Amy als said that it was great that my daughter wuld be able t stand up fr herself in a relatinship that wasn't wrking.
Thse cmments really made me feel awful. I hadn't cnsidered anything psitive abut her behavir-but utside f ur mther-daughter relatinship, I wuld never want t devalue my daughter's strng will.
After talking with Amy, I realized that I was the ne wh needed help understanding discipline vs cntrl. Hnestly, I did hate that the respnsibility was n me. I wanted permissin t scream and punish. But I listened t Amy and here's what I learned.
(1)My daughter's behavir was nrmal. That eased my fears that I had raised a terrible human and failed as a mther.
(2)My daughter's strng persnality was a strength. That revelatin was a huge gift. I value her qualities but dn't want them used against me. I will sften my respnse and listen t her.
(3)I went crazy. In fact, I crssed a line. And that happens. But I learned t aplgize and reset s that we culd mve frward.
My jb, therefre, is t learn new respnses that ffer my daughter ptins and realistic cnsequences, nt empty threats. And hpefully, this will change my relatinship with my daughter.
4.What is the actual reasn the authr had a fight with her daughter?
A. The daughter wuldn't give her the keys.

A. she had helped her daughter t test bundaries
B. she didn't treasure the mther-daughter relatinship

A. her daughter's strng character shuld be sftened
B. she shuld cnstructively deal with cnflict
C. her daughter shuld cntrl her behavir
D. she shuld admit her failure as a mther
7.Accrding t Amy, what shuld the authr say if the same situatin happens again?
A. "D yu really think yu can just walk ut the dr like that?"
B. "It's nt safe t be ut s late. What abut tmrrw afternn?"
C. "It desn't matter whether yu g ut r nt. I will supprt yu."
D. "Yu have been disrespectful and can't g ut tnight. Is that clear?"

Laughing tgether is an imprtant way fr peple t cnnect and bnd. And thugh the causes f laughter can vary widely acrss individuals and grups, the sund f a laugh is usually recgnizable between peple belnging t different cultures.
But what abut animals? D they “laugh”? And are the causes f animal and human laughter alike? In humans, peple may laugh when they hear a jke, r when they see smething that they think is funny, thugh itˈs unknwn if animalsˈ intelligence includes what humans wuld call a sense f humr.
Hwever, many animals prduce sunds during play that are unique t that pleasant scial interactin. Researchers cnsider such vcalizatins t be similar t human laughter. Recently, scientists investigated play vcalizatin t see hw cmmn it was amng animals. The team identified 65 species that “laughed” while playing—mst were mammals(哺乳动物), but a few bird species demnstrated playful laughter t. Reprts f playful laughter were ntably absent in studies describing fish, perhaps because there is sme questin as t whether r nt play exists at all in that animal grup. This new study culd help scientists t analyze the rigins f human laughter.
But hw can we identify play? Unlike fighting, play is usually repetitive and happens independently f ther scial behavirs, said lead study authr Sasha Winkler, a dctr f bilgical anthrplgy at the University f Califrnia. When it cmes t identifying it, “yu knw it when yu see it,” Winkler tld Live Science. One sign is that primates—ur clsest relatives—have a “play face” that is similar t the expressins f humans wh are playing.
When Winkler previusly wrked with rhesus macaques, she had nticed that the mnkeys panted(喘气)quietly while playing. Many ther primates are als knwn t vcalize during play, she said, s a hypthesis (laughter in humans is thught t have riginated during play) supprted by the play-related panting laughter f many primate species was put frward.
Peple nw still laugh during play, but we als integrate laughter int language and nn-play behavirs, using laughter in diverse ways t express a range f emtins that may be psitive r negative. Human laughter ntably differs frm ther animalsˈ laughter in anther imprtant way: its vlume. Peple bradcast their laughter ludly, ften as a way f establishing inclusin. By cmparisn, when mst animals laugh, the sund is very quiet—just lud enugh t be heard by the laugherˈs partner.
“ Itˈs really fascinating that s many animals have a similar functin f vcalizatin during play,” Winkler tld Live Science. “But we d have these unique parts f human laughter that are als an imprtant area fr the future study.”
8.What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T explain causes f animal and human laughter.
B. T assess cmplexities regarding animal laughter.
C. T present findings n the existence f animal laughter.
D. T analyze differences between animal and human laughter.
9.What can we learn frm this passage?
A. Animal laughter is even nticeable in fish.
B. Animal laughter is hard t recgnize during play.
C. Peple have learned t cmbine play with laughter.
D. Peple laugh ludly because they want t invlve thers.
10.What is prbably the fcus f the future study n laughter?
A. Distinctive features f human laughter.
B. Different functins f animal laughter.
C. The rigin and develpment f human laughter.
D. The relatinship between animal laughter and intelligence.
D
Arguably, the biggest science develpment f the year t date has been the images f the very depths f the universe taken by the James Webb Space Telescpe (JWST). Thse images beg a cmparisn between the external and internal universes that science is bent n bserving and understanding.
Decades ag, astrphysicist Carl Sagan famusly said, "The universe is als within is. We're made f star-stuff. We are a way fr the universe t knw itself." He was cmmenting then n the reality that ur internal universe was as cmplex and as fantastic as the uter space.
There are many similarities between the prgress we've made in understanding the universe and in piecing tgether life's inner wrkings. Like the technlgical develpments that tk us frm Galile's telescpe t the Hubble t the JWST, life science tls have als imprved rapidly. Frm early light micrscpes t mdern super-reslutin nes, these develpments have affrded researchers a deep lk int bilgy's infinitesimal (无限小的) landscape. Learning that living things were cmpsed f cells was, nt a terribly lng time ag, a revlutinary bservatin. Since then, scientists have been able t dive ever deeper int the cmpnents f life.
Ging beynd merely bserving the cmplicated makeup f rganisms, life scientists can nw discver the wrkings f mlecules (分子). And that is where scanning the universe differs frm peering int bilgy. Understanding the universe, especially frm a functinal standpint, is nt necessarily an immediate urgency. Understanding bilgy n that level is. Simply bserving the amazing internal structure f cells is nt enugh. Bilgists must als characterize hw all thse parts interact and change in different envirnments and when faced with varius challenges. Being able t image a virus r bacterium is nice at the level f basic science. But knwing hw viruses gain entry int cells and spread, infect, and disable can literally save lives. Thrugh time, bilgy has risen t this mechanistic challenge. Nt nly can life science tls prduce images f cell cmpnents, even mre imprtantly, they can help predict the effects f drugs n receptrs, f immune cells n freign invaders (入侵者), and f genetic perturbatins (基因干扰) n develpment and aging.
This is nt t belittle the wrk f scientists researching int universe. They shuld rightly be praised fr delivering views f impssibly distant, impssibly massive phenmena. My aim is t celebrate these accmplishments while at the same time recgnizing that science's inward search fr detail and insight is equally impressive and, in my view, mre urgent. The utput f bth the utward and inward explratins shuld stimulate wnder in everyne. After all, it's all star-stuff.
11.Why des the authr qute Carl Sagan's cmment in Paragraph 2?
A. T intrduce the backgrund.B. T prve an assumptin.
C. T make a cmparisn.D. T present an idea.
12.Like the study f the universe, life science has been advancing in ________.
A. study apprachesB. system management
C. research facilitiesD. technlgy integratin
13.We can infer frm Paragraph 4 that bilgists' wrk is ______.
A. practicalB. riskyC. flexibleD. ppular
14.As fr life science, which wuld the authr agree with?
A. It has received universal recgnitin.
B. It shuld enjy pririty in develpment.
C. It can be applied in the majrity f areas.
D. It is mre cmplicated than space science.

With climate change cntinuing t wrsen, ur situatin is beginning t feel increasingly serius. (15) Is it right? Maybe nt.
Techn-ptimism is ne f the greatest miscnceptins when it cmes t slutins t ensure ur future. It can be defined as a belief that future technlgies will slve all f ur current prblems. One f the best examples f this ptimistic miscnceptin is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an ec-friendly way t get arund, electric cars are nt the end fr the future f transprt. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we culd be seeing a shrtage f by the midcentury. (17) Techn-ptimism has led many t believe that if everyne just switched t driving electric vehicles, we wuld be making incredible steps twards sustainability. Hwever, the reality is that the amunt f resurces and energy needed t prduce enugh electric vehicles fr everyne is nt even remtely sustainable.
(18) Investing in public transprtatin and mving away frm individually wned vehicles. Prducing fewer cars. Imprving recycling practices f ld batteries. The slutins we seek shuld nt be rted in new technlgy, but be abut changing the way ur sciety functins.
Techn-ptimism puts t much emphasis n technlgy and nt enugh n what we can d right this minute. Unfrtunately, peple seem t like the picture that techn-ptimism paints. (19) It is imprtant t understand that the prblem begins when we see thse technlgies as a way t make ur current lifestyles ec-friendly. Until we are ready t face the need fr a less cmplex life, we cannt make true prgress twards sustainability.
A. S where shuld we lk fr answers instead?
B. The mdern wrld's simple slutin is technlgy.
C. Mrever, they are mre energy intensive t prduce.
D. Is it a trap that many peple have fallen int in recent years?
E. Unfrtunately, this is an incredibly dangerus pinin t hld.

31.As a nvice teacher at a kindergarten, I spent a lt f time bserving the interactin between experienced teachers and their students. Oftentimes when kids fall, they dn’t start crying immediately. Usually kids will be OK until they lck eyes with an adult: ne that they trust and knw can d smething fr them. When I nticed this, I s wanted it t happen t me, because that meant I had earned a kid’s trust and had prven that I was able t help them with anything.
One day it finally happened. Hearing a kid yell, “Teacher, Sam fell dwn.” I rushed ut and fund Sam, wh was lking puzzled. When ur eyes lcked, his lwer lips started trembling and tears welled up in his eyes. He ran twards me and let me give him a big hug. We checked t make sure he wasn’t hurt. It was in that mment that I realized smething dd. Sam’s vulnerability and cming t me fr help was suppsed t give me mre pwer. But strangely, the pwer,I felt, shifted mre t Sam, because he was giving me a privilege: a gift fr me t d smething fr smene.
With everything I learned frm teaching in the kindergarten, I went t cnquer ther things in life. Later I landed a jb t wrk extensively with vlunteers. I lved the relatinship I was building there and the feeling f being asked fr help.
Over time, I increasingly pressured myself t stay busy and helpful. My self-wrth became assciated with my perfrmance at wrk, which brught abut ne f the lwest mments f my life. Even then, my mind was running at a hyper speed int prblem-slving mde and it didn’t even ccur t me that I culd ask fr help. I was surrunded by s many peple wh cared fr me,but I just culdn’t see them. Finally, my gd friend had t literally hld me by my shulders and frce me t ask fr help. With their nging supprt, I vercame ne difficulty after anther.
