As peple's explratin f space becmes mre and mre advanced, peple find there is mre and mre space junk. It is a great danger fr humans t explre space. S what des space junk refer t?
Space junk refers t unwanted man-made bjects left in space.
Brken satellites stay in rbit. Astrnauts als drp small things .and mre space bjects create new junk.
Hw des space junk frm?
Brken satellites
Old space bjects
It mves at high speed. Even small pieces can break spacecrafts and satellites and cause mre junk.
Why is space junk dangerus?
Cuntries need t wrk tgether t slve the prblem.
Hw d we deal with space junk?
catch space junk
burn space junk
1 Yu are ging t listen t a lecture. Lk at the picture belw. What d yu think the lecture will be abut? Discuss in pairs
2 Listen t the lecture and check if yur guesses were crrect. Then write dwn the main idea f the lecture.
What space junk is and why it is a big prblem fr us.
3 Listen again and chse the crrect answers. Nte that there can be mre than ne answer t a questin.
(1)Which f the fllwing can be space junk? a astrnauts’ glves b brken satellites c parts f rckets(2)Why can tiny pieces f space junk destry spacecrafts and satellites? a Because spacecrafts and satellites travel very fast. b Because mst pieces f space junk are man-made bjects. c Because the amunt f space junk is grwing fast.(3)What prblems can space junk cause? a It may fall back t the Earth and hurt peple. b It may make space missins dangerus. c It may hit satellites and spacecrafts in rbit.
There are tens f thusands f man-made bjects in rbit arund the Earth. Many f them are useful things, like space statins and weather satellites. Hwever, peple have left lts f unwanted bjects in space t, such as parts f ld rckets. These bjects are knwn as space junk.Since the 1950s, peple have sent ver 10,000 satellites int space. Many f these satellites have stpped wrking, but they are still in rbit because it is t expensive t bring them back t the Earth. Astrnauts have als drpped things during their spacewalks, such as cameras, glves and tl bags. These bjects cntinue t rbit the Earth as space junk.
Space junk is a big prblem, and it is getting wrse. Every year, we send mre and mre things int rbit, and this means mre and mre space junk in rbit t. Mst pieces f space junk are very small, but they can still be very dangerus. Objects in rbit, such as satellites and spacecrafts, are travelling very, very fast. This means a small piece f space junk can destry a spacecraft r satellite. When this happens, the spacecraft r satellite is brken up int hundreds f pieces, and there will be even mre space junk in rbit. Scientists are very wrried abut space junk because it can make space missins very dangerus. If there is t much space junk in rbit, it will becme impssible t travel int space. Cuntries arund the wrld need t wrk tgether t slve this difficult prblem.
4.What can we d t slve the prblem f space junk? Discuss in pairs.
1.We can make better space tls t stp making new space shuld wrk tgether t deal with space can design new satellites that can return t the earth can invent special machines t cllect space shuld send fewer useless things int space.
Discussing pssibilities f living n Mars
1 Tw students are talking abut ging t Mars. Read the dialgue and learn hw t express pssibility and impssibility. Pay attentin t the expressins in blue.
S1: I'm ging t visit Mars.S2: That's impssible! Yu must be jking.S1: N, I'm nt jking. It'll be pssible t travel t Mars in the near future!S2: Says wh?
S1: The scientists. They say that we've made great prgress in Mars explratin. S it's very likely that we'll be able t fly there by the 2050s.S2: I still think it's unlikely.
2 D yu think peple will be able t live n Mars in the future? Discuss in pairs. Use the facts belw t help yu.
What scientists knw abut Mars·There's very little xygen. The air is mstly CO₂ (abut 95%).·It's very cld (average surface temperature:-63℃).
·The air is thin, s the radiatin(辐射)levels are high.·There is ice n Mars's nrth ple. In the future, water may allw peple t survive there.·Of all the planets, the envirnment n Mars is mst similar t the Earth's.·There are different seasns n Mars, just like n Earth.
When we talk abut things we are nt sure abut, we can use the expressins belw:
Expressing pssibility• It’s pssible t...• It’s (very) likely that...• It’s quite prbable that...• There is a gd chance that...
Expressing impssibility• It’s impssible t...• It's unlikely that...• I seriusly dubt that...• That's impssible!
1.It is imprtant t keep a healthy ___________/ˈdeɪli ruːˈtiːn/.2. _________/speɪs dʒʌŋk/ brings great risks t ur research.3. Dn’t be afraid t ____________/meɪk mɪˈsteɪks/ when yu learn new knwledge.4. Many __________________ /ˌmæn ˈmeɪd ˈɑːbdʒekts/ help peple live a better life.5. A strng hit can easily _______ /dɪˈstrɔɪ/ expensive machines.
daily rutine
make mistakes
man-made bjects
二、用下面句式翻译1.未来有可能清理太空垃圾。(It’s pssible t...)It’s pssible t clean up space junk in the future.2.很可能会产生更多太空垃圾。(It’s (very) likely that...)It’s very likely that mre space junk will be prduced.3.很有可能人们会减少太空垃圾。(It’s quite prbable that...)It’s quite prbable that peple will cut dwn space junk.4.很有可能人类会共同解决这个问题。(There is a gd chance that...)There is a gd chance that humans will slve the prblem tgether.
5.立刻清除所有太空垃圾是不可能的。(It’s impssible t...)It’s impssible t clear all space junk at nce.6.太空垃圾短期内不太可能消失。(It's unlikely that...)It's unlikely that space junk will disappear in a shrt time.7.我非常怀疑我们能快速解决太空垃圾问题。(That's impssible!)I seriusly dubt that we can slve the space junk prblem quickly.
With the develpment f mdern technlgy, human beings have e______ space fr many years. Hwever, a serius prblem called space junk is becming wrse and wrse. Space junk i_______ brken satellites, ld rcket parts and small things drpped by astrnauts. These useless man-made bjects are flying arund the Earth at high speed. They are really dangerus. Even a tiny piece can d______ a spacecraft r a wrking satellite. What’s wrse, serius accidents will c_____ mre rubbish and pllute uter space. Nw space junk has becme a big threat t space travel. If we d nt take actin, it may be i_________ fr humans t explre space ne day. T slve this prblem, scientists are trying t invent new t______ t cllect space rubbish. Als, cuntries arund the wrld shuld wrk tgether. We shuld design better space prducts t prduce less waste. Prtecting space is als ur d______. Only by paying attentin t this prblem can we enjy a safe and clean space envirnment in the future.
