This little Suth American Magellanic penguin swims 5,000 miles, t a beach in Brazil, every year in rder t be reunited with the man wh saved its life. It sunds like smething ut f a fairy tale, but it's true!

71-year-ld retired brick wrker Ja, wh lives in an island village just utside Ri de Janeir, Brazil, fund the small Magellanic penguin lying n rcks at his lcal beach in 2011. The penguin was cvered in il and running ut f time fast. Ja rescued the penguin, naming it Din, cleaned the il ff its feathers and fed him a daily diet f fish t rebuild its strength. After a week f recvery, Ja attempted t release the penguin back int the wild. Hwever, Din had already frmed a family bnd with his rescuer and wuldn't leave.
"He stayed with me fr 11 mnths and then, just after he changed his cat with new feathers, he disappeared," Ja recalls. "I lve the penguin like it's my wn child and I believe the penguin lves me," Ja tld Glb TV. "N ne else is allwed t tuch him. He pecks (啄) them if they d. He lies n my lap, lets me give him shwers, and allws me t feed him."
Prfessr Krajewski, a bilgist wh interviewed the fisherman fr Glb TV, tld The Independent: "I have never seen anything like this befre. I think the penguin believes Ja is part f his family and prbably a penguin as well."
Hwever, envirnmentalists warn that, while hundreds f the Magellanic species are knwn t naturally migrate (迁徙) thusands f miles nrth in search f fd, there has been a wrrying rise in the phenmenn f ceanic creatures washing up n Brazil's beaches. Prfessr David Zee frm Ri de Janeir's State University, said the increase is due in part t glbal climatic changes. Prfessr Zee added that sea animals face increased danger frm leaked tanker il.
Luckily the ending fr Ja and Din has been a happy ne, even thugh it is illegal in Brazil t keep wild animals as pets.
Prfessr Krajewski said: "Prfessinals wh wrk with animals try t avid relatinships like this ccurring s they are able t reintrduce the animal int the wild. But in this single case the authrities allwed Din t stay with Ja because f his kindness."
      4.Every year Din swims a lng distance t a beach in Brazil t ______.
      A. avid being killedB. meet his rescuer
      C. escape frm cean currentsD. find much mre fish
      5.When Din was fund in 2011 ______.
      A. he was dying
      B. he was running n the beach
      C. he was resting n a rck
      D. he was cleaning il ff his feathers
6.What can we learn abut Ja frm the passage?
      A. He is nt allwed t keep the penguin as a pet by the authrities.
      B. He verprtects the penguin by keeping him away frm thers.
      C. His cntact with the penguin is encuraged by prfessinals.
      D. His kindness wins the penguinˈs trust.

In 2012, James Camern, creatr f Avatar and Titanic, became the first persn t reach the Challenger Deep. When he arrived at the deepest spt n Earth at 7 miles belw sea level, he spent hurs mapping the regin and taking phts and samples.
“As human beings, we’re drawn t abslutes — the deepest, the highest, the cldest, the farthest,” he says. “And as a stryteller and curius mnkey, I just wanted t see what was there.” The answer is bvius — plastic and mre. “Our s-called civilizatin is using the cean as its tilet,” Camern says. “Unless this changes, cean ecsystems are ging t cntinue their rapid cllapse.”
Despite decades f envirnmental studies, the impact f plastic and ther frms f pllutin n ceans are nt entirely understd. Initial studies appear t indicate that ingesting (摄取) them — either directly r indirectly — culd cause disease. Plastics can als release pisnus substances int the water, which culd ptentially impact animal ppulatins.
But plastic is just ne f the prblems facing ceans that have yet t be fully understd. “Plastic waste in the cean is hrrifying but is nly the mst bvius f ur many deadly waste streams, which include carbn that’s heating the atmsphere and making the cean acidic, and the run-ff nutrients frm all the wrld’s agriculture, which is causing anxic (缺氧的) dead znes the size f cuntries,” Camern says.
Oceans, like the rest f the wrld, are impacted by the burning f fssil fuels and the release f greenhuse gases like carbn dixide — abut 30 percent f which is absrbed by the sea. This absrptin causes cean acidificatin, where the pH level is altered t becme mre acidic. As a result, it’s harder fr sme creatures t frm shells and skeletns and cuntless species at the base f the fd web can struggle t survive, which, scientists say, has the ptential t cause huge disruptins t entire ecsystems. Indeed, cean acidificatin is thught t have played an imprtant rle in Earth’s wrst-ever mass extinctin event 252 millin years ag.
The effect f climate change n the wrld’s ceans will likely wrsen in cming decades. Last June, scientists annunced carbn dixide levels had reached the highest levels since human recrds began. The last time carbn dixide levels were this high was during the Plicene era, between 3 and 5 millin years ag, when glbal temperatures were abut 4 degrees Celsius warmer than they are tday. Current climate mdels suggest that if greenhuse gas emissins cntinue n their current trend, we may be n curse t see 4 degrees f warming by 2100.
As a result, understanding the rle ceans have n glbal systems is becming mre and mre imprtant.
8.What are the first tw paragraphs mainly abut?
      A. The authr’s feelings t the cean.
      B. Camern’s mvies and remarks.
      C. The authr’s discveries under the sea.
      D. Camern’s bservatin and cncern.
9.What des the underlined wrd “disruptins” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean?
      A. Decreases.B. Destructin.C. Diseases.D. Discriminatin.
10.Why des the authr mentin the mass extinctin event 252 millin years ag?
      A. T call n peple t prtect sea animals.
      B. T cmpare current situatins with the past.
      C. T explain hw serius the cean prblem is.
      D. T prve pllutin t be the cause f acidificatin.
11.What can we infer frm the passage?
      A. Several cuntries are suffering frm anxic dead znes.
      B. Mre cncern shuld have been given t the pllutin n ceans.
      C. Plastic is suppsed t be the mst serius envirnmental prblem.
      D. Ocean acidificatin remves the nutrients frm agricultural prducts.
      D
The argument that human-caused carbn emissins (排放) are merely a drp in the bucket cmpared t greenhuse gases generated by vlcanes has been making its way arund the rumr mill fr years. And while it seems t be reasnable, the science just desn’t back it up.
Accrding t the US Gelgical Survey (USGS), the wrld’s vlcanes, bth n land and undersea, generate abut 200 millin tns f carbn dixide (CO2) annually, while ur autmtive and industrial activities cause sme 24 billin tns f CO2 emissins every year wrldwide. Despite the arguments t the cntrary, the facts speak fr themselves: Greenhuse gas emissins frm vlcanes cmpse less than ne percent f thse generated by tday’s human activities.
Anther indicatin that human emissins surpass thse f vlcanes is the fact that atmspheric CO2 levels, as measured by sampling statins arund the wrld, have gne up cnsistently year after year regardless f whether r nt there have been majr vlcanic eruptins in specific years. “If it were true that individual vlcanic eruptins dminated human emissins and were causing the rise in carbn dixide cncentratins, then these carbn dixide recrds wuld be full f spikes— ne fr each eruptin,” says Cby Beck, a jurnalist writing fr nline envirnmental news. “Instead, such recrds shw a smth and regular trend.”
Furthermre, sme scientists believe that vlcanic eruptins, like that f Mt.St. Helens in 1980 and Mt. Pinatub in 1991, actually lead t shrt-term glbal cling, nt warming, as sulfur dixide (SO2), ash and ther particles in the air and stratsphere (平流层) reflect sme slar energy instead f letting it int Earth’s atmsphere. SO2, which cnverts t sulfuric acid aersl, when it hits the stratsphere, can linger there fr as lng as seven years and can exercise a cling effect lng after a vlcanic eruptin has taken place.
Scientists tracking the effects f the majr 1991 eruptin f the Philippines’ Mt. Pinatub fund that the verall effect f the blast was t cl the surface f the Earth glbally by sme 0.5 degrees Celsius a year later, even thugh rising human greenhuse gas emissins and an El Nin event caused sme surface warming during the 1991 — 1993 study perid.
In an interesting twist n the issue, British researchers last year published an article in the peer reviewed scientific jurnal Nature shwing hw vlcanic activity may be cntributing t the melting f ice caps in Antarctica but nt because f any emissins, natural r man-made. Instead, scientists Hugh Crr and David Vaughan f the British Antarctic Survey believe that vlcanes underneath Antarctica may be melting the cntinents ice sheets frm belw, just as warming air temperatures frm human-induced emissins erde them frm abve.
      12.Accrding t Paragraph 1, sme peple argue that _.
      A. their pinin is supprted by science
      B. vlcanes generate mst f the greenhuse gases
      C. human activities are t blame fr greenhuse gases
      D. carbn emissins prduced by vlcanes are increasing
13.What des the underlined wrd “spikes” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Sudden increases.B. Smth trends.
      C. Stable regularities.D. Sharp declines.
      14.The purpse f the passage is t _.
      A. cmpare the results f the studies
      B. cntradict a view held by sme peple
      C. present new findings fr greenhuse phenmenn
      D. reprt the effects f CO2, in greenhuse phenmenn
      二、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共10分。
When yu g t cncerts, yu expect yur favrite musician t perfrm amazingly n stage. But yu may have nticed smething curius that mst musicians dn't just play with their fingers. They als invlve bdy mvements that fit the sng's beat r dance fllwing the music. (15) The facial expressins musicians shw when playing may seem strange r crazy t an utsider, but all that pulling faces might actually serve a purpse.
Firstly, playing a musical instrument usually requires intense fcus and cncentratin. (16) Their facial expressins can be a demnstratin f the intense emtins and physical effrt that g hand-in-hand with musical perfrmance. They're ften subcnscius—in fact, many f us will pull strange faces when we're deeply invlved in an activity we care abut.
      (17) Musicians have a strng emtinal cnnectin with the music they perfrm. They ften use their facial expressins t express the md and interpretatin f the music, which creates a mre engaging musical experience. While facial expressins may nt directly make smene a better musician, they might cntribute t the verall artistry f the music.
Perfrming live music is a rather stressful experience, s it culd be that the perfrmer is expressing thse nerves thrugh their face-biting the bttm lip, fr example. Luckily, nerves will ften g away sn after a musician starts perfrming. (18)
The facial expressins bviusly t sme extent express the perfrmer's inner wrld. Anther interesting thing is that making facial expressins can have a physilgical impact n the musician's perfrmance. Sme research suggests that certain facial mvements can activate specific muscles and imprve muscle harmnizatin. (19) Hwever, it's imprtant t nte that this relatinship is still nt well understd, and the extent t which facial expressins directly impact musical cmpetence is a subject f nging investigatin.
